    I'm glad someone posted this- I've had these issues intermittently over the years with stihl. Normally just buy a new head as they are only cheap. I will have to investigate the gauze though I can't think that was the issue. The idea of backing off the chain after each use is old school- does that really make any difference to oil pump issues?

    Jury still out on Aspen We certainly have no machine problems that would warrant switching. I don't understand all these stale fuel issues. It's never happened with our kit- wonder why!!

    no mate!! not at all I take telephone enquiry down with number address name and if necessary 'how did you hear about us' Go see job. On the same A5 pad I write down job details and maybe take a photo or two. Get back and sometime within a week I either e mail of post a quote. If job gets accepted I book in a provisional date then phone nearer the time. Do job Send invoice Await payment Keep tabs on all money due and paid invoices by regularly going through invoice file . That also lets you know how much money you should have. Wife does the hard stuff= PAYE/Tax/- incidentally all online. Maybe I'm the dinosaur:001_smile: Or simple.

    Paul- I love your honesty and enthusiasm for trees- I too have been in the hole with mattock and hand saw- even on conifers that 'sensible?' customers have had felled before worrying about getting out the roots- before grinders were so commonplace. We occasionally work up London way- 3 days next week as it happens but more south east- Sevenoaks/Welling/ Dartford If you can get to these areas then let me know and we'll exchange details. I'm thinking the journey would make it uneconomic but the offer is there. Mick is a sound fella- I reckon you've a good contact there.

    Chlorine used to bleach the recycled paper. We all know what a good greenhouse gas chlorine is.

    are you serious- £108 for 250L fuel- thats a bargain- where do I get it. We have about 2L of aspen left after having given it a go in a hedgecutter. No adjustments. To run all strimmers/hedge cutters/chainsaws/blowers on aspen would cost about £80-100 per week. Mowers etc - I think the distance from the engine means it is not so necessary. So thats £100 for aspen or £40 for unleaded 2 stroke. Times say 45 gives an additional cost of £1800 per year Thats about 3 or 4 new chainsaws. What price your health? I don't know really, I don't know!!

    I don't think it's the contractors job to tell the TO about a specific tree. That reeks of getting in TO's good books. A client has asked you to fell a tree. You quote and suggest they check conservation area and TPO issues. You cover yourself by doing the same with their permission. Whatever comes next is whatever comes next. If your client says there are no TPO's and your investigations are the same then why not fell immediately because the client will blame you for delaying the process allowing the TPO to be served. You won't look good.

    The old rules still apply. You need to make them realise they are getting better value by using you. Don't just assume they know- tell them.

    If you've got her e mail instructions and agreement can you not just deliver it and bill her. It's pretty bespoke and you will not sell it easily. If she doesn't pay then small claims may be the way to go. Sounds hard but lets face it you spent time and materials on this item.

    They arrived yesterday Have to say very impressed. Previously used a Stihl chopping maul which is good but needs a lot of heave ho. Once I got used to the kindling axe not wanting to embed itself in the chopping stump. Only gripe was I didn't like the handle as much as a wooden one. Left my hands feeling a bit raw- other than that this is a great design:thumbup1: Well done Jon on the boot fair axe.

    Brand new posh rabbit hutch for our ferrets Kids toys 2 rabbits and all the kit- different customer to the above massive coil of chunky rope stone chair the usual beers and wine

    between £65 and £80 on the books without aerial rescue. But they do get to work all year with holidays and have ticket opportunities and PPE supplied etc. They don't mind. The young ones living at home are positively loaded.

    Just ordered plus small kindling axe. Looking forward to testing it- hard to believe it will be better than my stihl maul but nothing ventured....

    A lot of tree work isn't that dangerous or technical but making money from it- now thats the clever thing:biggrin:

    you got to play by the rules and if the rules say you can't deliberately lose then you should be out. The skill is in losing without making it look deliberate. Thats not so easy especially if your opponents also want to lose. I would agree by a toss of a coin before the event who should lose.
