  2. I heard McDillen chainsaws are better than stihl and husky put together
  3. Another way I've seen is to bore down the middle 4 times to make a sqaure, then bore in from the side, a few inches off the bottom, and remove the long square piece. Then light a small fire in the hole.

    Fuel can

The stihl is easier because it's clear, much easier to use
  5. How much have you got to spend? There's a number of different Japaneese makes who do good strimmers/brush cutters in the 40-45cc range, probably about £200-£250 new. They're well built and reliable. The one I've got is a Daishin I think, with a Kawasaki th43 engine
  6. If anyone is interested, the castle/estate I work on some of the time is having its first of its open days for the year next week It's Castle Leod, which is on the outskirts of Strathpeffer Castle Leod - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia http://www.scotlandmag.com/magazine/issue39/12008687.html It's open Weds 25th to Sun 29th, 2pm-5.30pm Adults £7, kids £4, concessions £6, with money going to the clan Mackenzie charitable trust The castle itself is very picturesque and has a lot of history, but the main interest for me is the grounds which have some amazing specimen trees. There's the spanish chestnut, first recorded planted tree in the country (1550), and a pair of massive wellingtonias, one of which is the biggest in the country. Worth a visit
  7. What is a turning strop and how is it used?
  8. Aye but Rodney, this time next year we'll be millionaires
  9. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFeR8Qlkrfg]YouTube - Draft Horse Powered Treadmill woodsplitter 014.AVI[/ame] :laugh1:
  10. I've had the rayburn on some nights, have a huge pile of rubbish bits that I would rather get rid of (bark/sawdust), better off heating the water than being left to rot
  11. Also if someone is on your books (rather than self employed) you will need to provide all their ppe, mess facilities, paid holidays, sick pay etc
  12. I would've thought £6-£7 an hour was a fair rate, slightly more if they're self employed
  13. If you live in Scotland you can get up to £200 towards B+E training with the ILA, all the centres are based in the central belt though
  14. Here nothing wrong with blue rope...
  15. What about getting the diesel transit, getting it remapped, block off the EGR, de cat it, every little helps
  16. I'm the other side of Inverness and have a "10 ton" petrol splitter, you could stockpile a load of logs then pay me to come in for a few hours/a day etc
  17. haha aye I have a simmillar thing Handy for loaded trailers!

    Saw this today

You should have told him you can buy additional frames for those scaffold towers
  19. Unless you modifed it, it does vertical splitting at ground level - a lot of bending down!
  20. I got a basic stainless steel 1l flask from tesco for about £4 Seems very simmillar to the thermos branded s/s 1l, which costs many times the price, just doesn't have the fancy flip up "tap" thing in the lid And have a ghille kettle which is a nice toy, can't beat a fire Also got a microwave fitted in the van running off an inverter
  21. Another option could be caged trolleys like the stuff gets delivered to supermarkets in. You can't stack them but you can wheel them about by hand on contrete/tarmac
  22. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVt3Mdasyfg]YouTube - FERGUSONS FIREWOOD PROCESSOR[/ame]
  23. I got one of those army style water bottles ('canteen'), comes with a holster so you can keep it on your belt, so you're never far from a drink
  24. All you need for the firewood is a chainsaw and a decent enough splitter (and a means of delivery!) Sounds like the local forest group
