  1. This guy made me wince
  2. I think it is possible to get some kind of gen that runs off the engine, never actually seen one though. Inverter is the simpler option, I have a 2kw (4kw peak) one in my van, haven't used it in ages though!
  3. Saw this advertised on ebay, I'm not really in the market for a new splitter, just like seeing what's out there! 26 Ton Diesel Hydraulic Log Splitter Lombardini Engine Fast Tow Trailer | eBay Looks a good well made bit of kit (not the usual chinese rubbish), even has a jockey wheel and legs so you can use it without being hitched up. Looks pretty sturdy, and works vertically at a good height. The only drawback is the controls are round the corner from the table! Doh!
  4. Saw an ad for this in the paper, a windfarm developer who is wanting to get permission to build 23 turbines on a site in Sutherland, is offering £20 a month off local people's deliveries of logs! You even get to choose the supplier yourself Muirhall Energy - Caplich - Tackling Fuel Poverty Never seen firewood used as bribery before lol!
  5. Is there anyone in your house on benefits, any oaps, kids etc? You may be able to get funding for a stove or insulation etc We both work so don't qualify for naff all in our cold (and rented) stone cottage! The woodburner is the main source of heat. I think I read an open fire is about 10-20% efficient and stoves are 60-85%, so quite a difference!
  6. I had a machine delivered on a pallet to me a month or so back, cost was £35 (+vat of course!), and I doubt the seller was taking a hit on that!

    insurance

At the black isle show this year a local supplier of kiln dried logs decided to put hundreds/thousands of flyers out in the car park under people's wipers. Not sure if they had permission from the show organisers, doubt it. Unfortunately they used cheap double sided flyers, there was a little rain during the day and half the paper stuck itself to the windscreens! The car park fields were full of people at 5pm trying to scrape the cr@p off. Not the best advert for your business!
  8. Defiantly charge per hour, and be mindful of the fact it may be full of nails or covered in soil

    Lyme disease

There was an article in the paper this year, a member of a mountain rescue team was saying the NHS blood test for lymes is no use, his came back negative, but he paid for a private one (possibly abroad?) which came back positive! I spend all my time in bracken, long grass, etc, but think I only got 1 tick this year!
  10. I always use petrol from 'proper' petrol stations (not supermarkets) in my machines. Not sure if it makes much difference but it's only a slight price increase!
  11. Won't be the biggest in the country but there's one in the 'big house' here that you can stand up inside! I think it's about 10ft wide.
  12. Jeans on a good day - and if it's wet, cheap waterproof trousers on top!
  13. I've got a ghillie, doesn't get used often, but is a nice little toy! A ghillie and kelly kettle are virtually the same thing but made by different companies, except the ghillie has a whistle, and was slightly cheaper at the time.
  14. Another idea could be a power barrow.....tracked one might go straight up, or you might be able to find an easier route for a wheeled one. Handy if you can use it on other jobs too
  15. Someone should tell the seller he can do a 2nd chance offer to the next highest bidder!
  16. Still got to stack the logs though! If you had a concrete floor you could use supermarket style cages and just wheel them about without a machine
  17. You could also look at a 4wd dumper truck. not as versatile as a tractor but can be used both on and off the road. Shorter than a tractor with trailer so can turn where there's little space.
  18. Hi, just wondering if anyone has any past experience on carrying extra petrol for a strimmer about your person. For when strimming long distances away from your vehicle. I'm thinking some sort of smallish container to carry in a rusksack or similar I looked at the alloy fuel bottles for camping stoves but it's nearly £20 for a 1 litre bottle Many years ago when I was at the council you'd sometimes take an old plastic bottle out the bin, fill with petrol mix and stick it in your pocket, which never seemed ideal!
  19. I thought the mad part was the fact it's made by silverline
  20. Blackcurrant/gooseberry cross = Jostaberry
  21. Try Hills of Devon for the weldmesh Chicken Wire | Welded Mesh | Aviary Mesh | Wire Netting | Thatching Materials | Wheat Reed | Water Reed
  22. Yeh works well but you get covered in cr@p I use a full face clear visor anyway but you'd really need a chinguard too, and overalls/waterproofs
