  1. I used to use Saturn knives when I had my TW150 - never had any problems. I now use their discs on my greenmech and am quite happy with those. If you are nervous of non OEM bits just shell out the extra, but I'd say there's lots of us who have been quite happy with Saturn. As for the knives being the key component - ask any TW mechanic and I suspect there are some other bits that are more vital but thats another thread!
  2. In the late 70s the students at Cambridge Uni did a brilliant one.... There were some road works starting in the town, one bunch of students went to the police and told them that a it was a rag week prank and they felt it would get out of hand. Meanwhile some other student went to tell the road works guys that a bunch of students dressed as coppers were coming along to try and stop them... Then they all just stood back and watched the fiasco unfold.
  3. Where theres money to be made the bad boys will move in. Shame it just reduces the trust we have in everyone - that includes the nice bods. I guess the only thing you can do is ALWAYS be careful - the honest bods will understand. From my experience its the scummy scammy brigade who get stroppy when you insist on progressing the deal in a controlled/safe manner. It's a bit like customers asking to see proof of insurance or qualifications - we might be surprised at first but if everybody did it it would drive out the cowboys.
  4. I might be interested - are they 300 tdis or TD5s? I'd appreciate a PM Thanks Shane
  5. I don't think we should tell the customer what they want, but surely Treepanda is right to advise customers on the implications of their request. It's just a case of how far you go with advice - if the customer is Adam Ant and you know he will get someone to do it anyway then in principles vs income - your individual choice. Often what they want is more light, or less leaves to clear up. This can often be better achieved with a crown lift and thin. If you are not deperate for work why not advise on what you consider to be best for the tree rather than best for your pocket???? A good reputation will spread and you'll do better in the long run - maybe even get a good reputation with the local tree officer - which will help with TPO applications. The customer is not always right in the beginning, but with good and well-presented advice they can usually be right in the end.
  6. How about Bark
  7. Could well be what Treequip says. Only other possible cause might be .. if yours has no throttle cable but the newer/improved (ha ha) fly by wire jobbies. If tha later fly by wire could be the throttle sensor booooggering about.
  8. The new sherriff is a ni.ding ding Wasn't there a gay western where the bandit rode into town and shot up the sherriff?
  9. This weekend I've got to bring my caravan home from storage so I can remove all useful bits then drag the carcass to our local stock-car circuit for the next demolition derby. My only concern is I'll be using my transit to tow it home - wonder if I'll get any hassles during that journey - I thought about giving a lift to a woman, a baby and a dog - then I realised to my horror - that IS my family!!! Think I'll move on to the next lay-by.
  10. You do realise that if they run this course for everyone, then nobody gains from it because we are all that much better at marketing ourselves. I don't want all my competitors becoming more competitive - only me! The selfish giant.
  11. Ladies and Gents - My Rayco 13HP grinder has been very good over the years, getting into places even the predators wouldn't go. Now, the time has come - I need a new stumpy!!!! My requirements are (based on need not marketed function/gizmos) - Narrow enough to fit through gates - AND get round tight corners. (Not ALL gates are 35 inches wide with straight access to garden) Decent sized engine (currently using 13hp) want 20hp + Less that 5 figures new (don't do enough to justify too much capital) Fit into an 8ft long storage thing. Ideally fit into a Peugeot Expert (wheelchair user) van Ideally less knackering to use than my rayco 13hp bicep developer NOT ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY Hydraulic control Power-drive wheels Remote control Tracks (for less than 10k ho ho ho) Having researched the market it looks like the Bandit HB20 fits the bill. 27HP - narrow - swivel facility looks pretty good Can anyone please tell me honestly what they are like to use/own?
  12. I use wind breaks (woven plastic, poles push into lawn/flower beds etc.) Cost about £2.00 each at car boot sales. May not look as 'professional' as the £160.00 jobby but they last quite a few jobs. When they get tatty chuck em out. We use 1/4 inch ply sheets on concrete/tarmac etc (hinged to be self supporting). Never had any breakages
  13. When will they be on the market??
  14. As its snowing today - why not spend a bit of time in your workshop and cobble together something to rival this. Take a piccy and post up.
  15. Anything is possible - just depends how much hard work you are willing to put in. What did people do befor chainsaws/mechanical splitters? Try it manually for a while - if you get too knackd buy something to ease the work. Start at the less expensive end (hand trolley, chainsaw) and spend what is necessarry Someone on here has a signature along the lines of 'A man who cuts his own firewood gets warm twice' - Good luck
  16. This post is only my opinion and I'm not saying it is factually correct - here we go. You don't even need to look at the machine -it would appear to be a classic too good to be true scam!! The video just confirms it. Unbelievably cheap (CHEAP is the key word) How much are Greenmech/TW/Bandit/Jensen/etc... 8 inch chippers new? This one is £4k hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha - I'm not wasting any more of my life slagging off what I believe to be a piece of Junk. Someone please kill off this thread - my sides are splitting with laughter.
  17. They are pretty much all the same so right or wrong I see it as a level playing field. One bloke who took chemicals beat the others who took chemicals. If you read what training LA did it is conceivable that he had the edge because of that. You introduce big sums of money as incentives to the teams, set out a route which requires superhuman effort then are surprised that everyone pushes the rules/morals over the edge. He fought cancer, yes-he fought the rules, but he is a fighter and he kept on beating Ullrich. The big pity is that the first non-doping cyclist in each tour never got to stand on the podium in Paris. Then again was there a non-doper?? if so how far down the peleton was he????
  18. The clouds ripped open at 8:05 and all the temperature has gone from Sussex. Might get the stump grinder out - were due to do a big beech today...
  19. Nothing yet in this part of sussex - not much since I took my avatar photo (boo hiss)
  20. Two landrover forums and several slot-car forums. Yes there are people out there who discuss the best way to improve the performance of your scalextric cars - or which makes are the best!!! Its Stihl vs Husky all over again.
  21. Were they taken by French Nickers?
  22. I thought there was a no smirking policy in the workplace:lol::lol:
  23. There seems to be a grey area with fori (plural for forum?). They should encourage people to ask for advice without fear of ridicule. At the same time people seeking advice can help their own cause by doing a bit of groundwork and not expecting to be spoon-fed. If I am looking for someone to work for me I want someone with a bit of initiative, who will fill up the saws before trudging through the woods, keep the climbers rope free of tangles, never go to the van for something without an armful of brush for the chipper etc. etc. The questions that pee me off on here are things like... Has anyone got a perfect chipper for under £2,000? NO What is the best saw to buy? YOU'LL BUY WHAT YOU WANT ANYWAY How much can I legally carry in my transit? FIND A WEIGHBRIDGE + MATHS Are Land-rovers reliable? ONLY IF YOUVE GOT ONE How much should I be paid? WHAT SOMEONE IS WILLING How can I expand my business? WORK HARD AND SMART What secrets that took you 20 years of experience to acquire will you share withme so I can compete with your company? ASK FATHER JACK The list goes on - and there are stupid questions every day. I think, however, that us knarly old cynics who can fell a huge oak with a nail file should maybe be seen to be tolerant of these 'wet behind the ears' newcomers and give a bit of polite guidance and not assassinate them (or ignore their post). I, for one, would be happy to advise someone who has shown some initiative but needs a bit of moral support. If, however, someone wants a 10 point guide on how a fresh-from-college kid can fast-track his way to the top maybe the post should be put in a 'special' forum and be politely ignored. Rant over grrrrrr grrrrrr
  24. They used to use it for making matches, but that's quite a boring job milling it down to that size. 18 million cuts per but. Ian - that looks so cool!
  25. Looks absolutely the mutts nuts - I trust the big bearing on the cutter wheel is plenty strong enough, just imagine that bad boy coming loose and wheeling through fences/cars/pedestrians...... I'm starting saving for one now!
