  1. That was 40 inch diameter, obviously, not 40 inches high before any smartharses jump in.
  2. I've never found a stump in a rear garden that my 13hp rayco can't do. I admit the 40 inch oak to 18 inches below ground took a lot of effort but no bigger machine would fit. Killed my back but made hundreds on it. Unless the 9hp is smaller I'd go for 13 but I've never used a 9 so IC Trees may be right
  3. Some approximation to a holm oak (quercus Ilex)????
  4. I believe most manufacturers 'discourage' the use of hedge trimmer attachments on long poles. It's something to do with the clutch taking a beating wnen the trimmer hits a big resistance and/or the telesco[ing drive being a bit too delicate - the chainsaw attachment allegedly has its own clutch so no problem. I know that both times I've had to have my stihl telescopic shaft repaired Mat (my retail man) asked if I had been using the hedge trimmer on it and told me off. He was right. So why do they make them to fit then?
  5. I've never understood how a quote can be anything but 'no obligation'. If I asked someone to give me a quote and they said 'only if you accept it' you can guess the rest. If you want to find out about the missed jobs you could mention it at quote time 'I'd be grateful if you could let me know either way..... or whatever, then you could more likely call back if you hear nothing. Only problem with stuff like that is that it can make you sound desperate. Try it - you could be on to a winner.
  6. Has anyone ever got so excited while climbing that theyve had an arborasm?
  7. Tony, I was surprised at your comments about how you are treated on here. I always thought you are highly respected as a very knowledgable professional. There are Richard Craniums everywhere with their ego-pumping testosterone-fuelled self love (Possibly owners of BMWs or audis). Just keep being yourself - without the fools, sensible folk have nothing to rise above.
  8. A short time before I took redundancy from a boring office job (and largely why I did) - My eldest daughter just said to me one day- 'Daddy, why dont you smile any more?' I had to leave the room and hide. This one comment from an innocent child cut through all my tough outer shell. She hit the nail on the head. I changed my life round. It caused me to go and find out about an outdoors career and how to get there. The rest is history - Thanks Beccy, you said more in that little question than any adult ever could. It still brings a tear to my eye now. But I'm happy

If you get a pay- out fron HMRC for 'shopping' someone is it tax free???
  10. Check the price of them. If you do a trawl through this site you'll see all the squabbling is between Stihl and Husky saw followers. Every Mc@@@@@@ I've seen on 'use' is constantly being tweeked. Cheap and cheerful (unlike the owners who are cheap and miserable) Put the money towards a proper saw.
  11. Can anyone tell me if all Predator stumpgrinders with am electric clutch use the same mechanism. I've seen the tracked machines being slated so I am interested to know if the pedestrian ones are similar, better/worse. Have they solved the problem with the latest ones? I'm still not sure which pedestrian one to go with but definitely want as much power as possible and no over-complicated designs.
  12. 'as the project for which I had bought it remained unanswered'. I agree that doesn't sound like the native tongue - that garden in the photo could be anywhere Why not buy a barge pole to not touch it with. Looks like a beast BUT too good to be true ?.....Tread with care
  13. Great news, it's so horrendous when a loved pet goes missing. Relieved he's back and OK
  14. This is just my opinion so fire away if you wish. You might have NPTC, or whoever, to show you know how (in theory) to work safely and pass the designated tests, plus a number of years experience (I guess most people would prefer it to be about what they have themselves). I've seen people who have 10,15, 20 years experience but when you see their work you'd have to say it was 1 years experience over and over again. A lot of guys round my way will not do TPO work (They say they are not interested in the paperwork) - or maybe they don't want their work scrutinised). Hmmmmm?????????? We can all be called tree surgeons, the quality ones are those with a good reputation.
  15. Thanks for all the input so far. As usual lots of good comments based on hard-earned experience. I must say that a lot of the jobs we do around town entail going through 'small' gates. I'm not sure where these mythical 'standard' 36 inch gates are, and most of them are followed by a sharp turn round sheds/ponds/greenhouses/walls. A machine which is 2.something metres long AND nearly 3ft wide would not get into most of the gardens we do. I think a pedestrian machine with a big engine is therfore the most likely answer. I know a chieftan tank with a 5,000 hp motor would be quicker but they just wont get to most 'town' stumps. If I do any monster park stuff I'll have to hire in a beast. The comments on my 'tracked grinder' thread are leading me away from that idea. Thanks again for all the input, Shane
  16. I wonder if they can really claim that. Think of the stress a loose blade is under when it hits the anvil with the force of the flywheel behind it - That would take some pasting. What do they do to their blades so they can claim they WILL NOT SHATTER I don't believe it myself. Are there any metallurgists here? Didn't TW have some legal gripe a few years ago about pattern blades??
  17. I assume they are Lombardy Pops???? at 100ft and 16 of them to 5 gardens. Roots will always be some sort of issue, depends on so many things. I know what our TO would say to a 50% reduction of any sort.
  18. Dont use allen bolts, they round off even easier than torx ones - thats why TW use torx bolts. I'd say change the bolts whenever you put NEW blades in. I used to clean the heads with a ground down chainsaw file (point handle end) picking out the crud then a blast with the air line. Always give the torx bit (half inch drive) a tap with a pin hammer prior to undoing - never had any problems. Have fun!!
  19. If you rely on throw lines and the flow is fast youd better be very quick, and accurate with the launching of the throw lines. Get a lifeguard to explain/show at your local pool. If, heaven forbid, something went wrong and the 'beak' will want to be impressed with your precautions - surely a lane-rope (with floats every 5 mtrs) across the river could be let out in a belly a few mtrs downstream without having to get permission from miserable householders. You couold use an old climbing rope with empty milk cartons attached. You could ask the local canoe club for volunteers- like they do for triathlon swims.
  20. Thats good news! That engine should go on for ever. I hope the flywheel bearings are behaving themselves for you. Are you still into the landies? I finally put a 300tdi motor in mine, well pleased now. Look after yourself and stay chilled.
  21. Stubby, Maybe the folks in Worthing are quicker to get out in their gardens PM me your details, if it starts getting silly I'd rather refer them to someone on here than just turn them away. That would be a nice problem to have wouldn't it . Good luck -
  22. I recon I had about 5-10 calls between December and last week. Luckily I'm booked into March but it always happens and I'm getting used to the 'winter drought'. Now the weather has lightened up my phone hasn't stopped ringing these last 2 days. Its like the monsoon - someone throws a switch and it goes crazy. I've got more quote visits to do in the next few days than December/January combined. Do you guys find such a dramatic seasonal fluctuation? As long as you know the calls will come you can stay calm and not feel the need to offer stupid quotes for the few calls you get in winter (but that was another thread). Heres to better days!

    Laying turf

Green side up:lol::lol: Sorry, I'll get my coat.
  24. Its just so inconsistent. A couple of years ago while I was unloading my van at a waste site in Worthing (NOT the one in Arundel I hasten to add) the 360 driver was operating the machine while drinking a can of Strongbow. He was driving it around in the same area as guys were tipping etc. well within boom reach. I admit I didn't challenge him - it's a bit of a down-marked site (a dump of a dump) which I will never use again. I called the HSE, the Police and the local authority and nobody was interested.
  25. The fat bloke down the pub, well his brother once knew a guy whose friend used to charge........ Too much heresay. Different people, different circumstances, different everything. Just keep being professional and have the confidence to charge the right rates. Professionals know what they are worth. If you've put something away for the dodgy season of quiet telephones there is no need to panic or drop prices. If I can't make enough profit (ALL expenses allowed for) to make more than I could working for someone else why should I bother??? Thats just me - If someone just wants cheapo all the time I'm not going to slave away for them. Rather do a days voluntary work at the local hospice.
