  1. Or mention that Tesco are interested - that will have an impact on the price.
  2. A friend of mine owns a small plot which was surrounded by a horseshoe shape plot. The builders bought the surrounding plot and offered my friend a 'low' price for his house/garden to make a good rectangular develoopment. My friend turned down the initial offer - so they just built right up to his boundary on three sides (totally different style of house) and now he's stuffed, bu@@er all light, windows in all directions, he'll never get a decent price for his gaff now. Can't believe planning guys allowed it. For those who know Worthing his is the old house surrounded by the 'giant beech huts' where Worthing Yacht club used to be.

    Branching out

Luckily the front fence had to be below 1.5 mtrs anyway to minimise cutting back the cherry-plum which is v close to the boundary - luckily we knew a tree surgeon who did a sympathetic reduction.

    Branching out

It depends who you talk to - searching Google brings up prices per 'panel' rather than per metre - some say over £100 per 3mtr panel including supply of all materials and removal of all waste. I must admit i'd be intrigued to know what others charge.

    Any takers?

Graham - that didn't take long, well done indeed!:thumbup1: I wouldn't want to fall into one of those whilst holidaying in a nidist colony!
  6. This was a 6th high bush with a similar spread. Growing in a protected municipal garden on the South Downs. The 'leaves' are up to 5 cms long. I'm checking my books and about to go a googling. Anybodt seen one of these before????
  7. Is it called the Brazilian rain forest because a lot of it has been removed?

    Newcastle area

Nepia - PM sent. Chris, I'll get the address asap Thanks guys Shane
  9. That looks like a still from a science fiction film - in the next frame they'll be gone!
  10. Is there any member in the Newcastle area who would like to earn a few beer vouchers? There's a concrete breaker advertised on Gumtree which I think Iwould like to buy but living in Sussex its a monster journey. The seller says he is happy to send it but how can I make sure it really exists? At least if someone from this forum could go and look at it to make sure it exists (I wouldn't expect anyone to be responsible for any problems) to at least rule out the obvious scam. Maybe, as a group, this sort of arrangement could be used on potential ebay purchases - just a thought - or has this been suggested in the past. Anyway, if anyone might be willing to help me out I will find the address (I know Newcastle covers a big area) and arrange voucher transfer. Thanks Shane
  11. I always vowed to steer clear of fencing (get asked by customers regularly) but this week I made an exception. I needed about 50ft of fencing in my own front garden and had redeived a few quotes. Recently we had a job cancelled at the last minute so I thought - 'Why not see if we can do a good job?' We had a couple of spare days - If it turns out crappy - we can re do it to perfection - When it is perfect we can decide if we fancy doing it as a service for others. So we did it - and got a great result first time - one run using panels in slotted posts and one run with close boarded panels, arris rails, wooden posts on spurs. I thought it came outr well (as good as any fences down our road)It was actually good fun, I paid my guys their usual day rate and I still came out of it quids in. Very happy and now gonna say 'yes' when people ask if we do fencing.
  12. If you cant afford the greenmech - the best old/cheap/small gravity fed chipper I ever used was the entec (now TW) treebusta. It was brilliant - I used it for 18 months and it never let me down. I believe the flywheel and bearings are the same as in the bigger machines. BUT at that size of input the bearings lasted fine. If you can find one they go for about £1k . If you want to be professional - avoid the camon (I had a new 150 as my first machine - and couldn't believe how much better the 4 year old treebusta was when I upgraded).
  13. I still haven't had an answer about collecting it and paying cash. It gives the olfactory stimuli a hint of rattus norviticus. Of course, it could be that he bought the chipper, chipped the one tree on the island and now has no further use for it - and he's too busy to reply to all those silly ebay questions. Maybe we should just give him the benefit of the doubt. HMMMM
  14. Maybe they will fit a timberwolf
  15. Sounds like youve decided you want a defender! As long as its a 'spare' its fine. I've had mine a few years now and it is a back up vehicle, we use it for winching, as a mobile platform and a soup kitchen in the cold weather. Like all landies it needs a bit of TLC but it is great for towing. You should get something reasonable for 6k - I'd go for a solid 300tdi and avoid all the electronic gizmos of TD5s. Remember - 80% of all landrovers ever built are still on the road,.... The other 20% have actually got to their destination. Good luck
  16. I've just sent a message to ask if cash on collection would be OK as there have been scammers using the Isles as a basis for the sale. I'll let you know if I get and answer.
  17. In the article it gives the address of the house - you can google earth it and see the corner round which mr Richard Cranium was overdoing the speed. Another case of audi tw@t driver. Having lost more than 1 valued friend and relative to RTAs I have strong feelings about such driving on public roads - best say no more or I'll be banished from here for abusive comments - I hope those in the house were all OK.
  18. I've had my RG13 since 2004 . Its earned me a fortune in that time. It needed the odd bit of welding but somehow it keeps on going. I've done oaks, ash and beech over 3ft diameter (hard work but this was the only machine I could get in). Go for it. As for transport - I bought a wheelchair carrying peugeot van. It comes with a built in ramp, an electric winch. Thay aare far cheaper than the standard vans and a lot less abused. Mine had under 25k miles, years MOT, 53 reg for a touch over £2,000. Never had any problems - one man job to load/unload - looks professional too.
  19. I've asked many people about this over the years and their answers collate to something like- 1. If you turn up in an expensive looking car - 'youre making too much money'. 2. Turn up in a banger of a works van - which lay-by do you live in? 3. Turn up in a decent works van or car - 'lets see what he has to say' 4. Turn up late without calling first - 'my time is not important to you' 5. Talk to them like the Paul Whitehouse 'geyser' character - 'No way' 6. Umm and err about price -'This guy has no idea Positive things to do... 7. Smile and be polite 8. Listen (not just hear) when the customer is talking 9. Offer advice on consequences but DONT tell them what needs doing 10. If it might be a TPOd tree - ask them (if it is and you haven't asked it looks bad) and wear what you like...
  20. In theory you can calculate it for anything under a metric tonne per m3. If you cut a cube or rectangle place it in water and measure how far up the side the water comes (as a percentage of the depth of that side) - ie 1. A 10 inch cube of timber placed in water, sinks down so 8 inches are below the surface. 2. The timber's density is 80% that of fresh water. 3. Water is 1 metric tonne /M3 so the timber is 800 kg per M3 The difficulty comes if its really heavy and it sinks - then you need more brain power than I'll ever have.
  21. I don't see any problem. If someone is selling something and NOT claiming it's something else. its obviouly cheapo and the price is cheapo... If you don't wanna buy it - dont.
  22. Given the number of threads like this how about inviting a representative from a constabularly to join the forum??? There are usually many comments about the police and their response to such things. It would be interesting to let someone have their say and maybe people could discuss preventative measures and anything else that could be done without reverting to the Charles Bronson hollywood vengeance fantasies which so often develop. I hasten to add I don't know any boys in blue but would be happy to try to find a senior spokesman from my area if people thought it was a good idea. If not I'll just get my crossbow dusted off and set up a few more man-traps behind the barn.
  23. The wording suggests you are exempt if YOU generated the waste. So - if you chip a pile of brushwood for a customer (or another tree company) you would need a license. A good reason to decline the 'While you are here could you just put that randomly stacked pile of Sh!te through your machine?'
  24. You say you may have bought it from Tesco???????? Maybe its got horse linament in it.
  25. Is this a very cheap policy underwritten by a huge corporation at a rediculously low price? As an ex Norwich Union employee (NU changed their name to Aviva a few years ago) I can tell you the company is sooooo big it's virtually impossible to find anyone who will admit that a particular task is down to them. They work flat out for their shareholders and Paul Whitehouse - and gonads to everybody else! They have been masters at letting individuals hide behind the 'not actually MY responsibility' banner. I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. Arborisk may well be fine but if it's all underwritten by Aviva - well... what can you expect. PS - yes I am a wee bit biased here.
