  1. I dare say that all of us that run a business get what we nowadays call stressed out, sometimes without realising it. Often its only when a loved one picks up on it and accuses you of being stressy a few minutes after you've walked over the doorstep that it hits home and a few minutes sitting down with a cuppa is all thats needed to restore calm again. But of course stress can much more severe than that. As said, doing something completely unrelated to your business can work wonders.
  2. If we could all charge that, then the tree game may be worthwhile once again to get a living from, and comparable to scaffolders, roofers and concreters.
  3. I cant believe that they always get their mum to phone me the night before or at 7 am to say so and so has got a bad foot,or hasnt come out of his bedroom all weekend,or still stoned,or has fever. And these are guys in their mid twenties.
  4. Wouldn't life be easier if you didnt have to put on your reading specs every time you want to read a text.
  5. If you hold a guinea pig up by its tail, its eyes will drop out.
  6. You've got a while to go before you catch me up Stubby.
  7. I dare say that nearly all of us who use a topper have used it one handed at one time or another, some more than most. Thanks for posting Gnarly,a wake up call for us all.
  8. Wel if this is the place to say it,here goes, ime absolutely fed up with youngsters that i spend all my time on teaching to cut hedges straight, feed chippers properly, and to use saws to a high standard of ability, when they have reached that level, only for them to unpredictably go off to wash lorries out or drive a fastrac for 16 hours a day or strim on a frontline mod fighter base all day every day.
  9. Yes,i hadn't thought of that. Two-man team in action Smash and Grab.
  10. I went out last night and looked at a fair sized willow leaning over a single storey clay tiled roof and glasshouse beside roof, big water filled ditch running beside trunk. Every last bit will have to be lowered and all cordwood cut into logs,so i said £700. He nearly fell in the ditch and looked at me as if ide gone completely barmy and said he'd had a quote for £150 cash and that surely ide made a terrible mistake. He then pulled out a grubby business card with '150 cash' written on the back to show me. I wished him good luck and on the way home wondered what on earth the tree business has become.
  11. You could always find the previous keeper from Swansea and see what he has to say for himself. Ive done that in the past.
  12. Had a quadchip previously and yes it was ok,better than a timberwolf leastways, been using a forst this year and i find it head and shoulders above anything else in the 6" class.
  13. For thick stuff i use my stihl hs81, could be worth investing in one as you're getting plenty of thick hedge work. If you're using one all day you will soon know whether you've got strong arms or not though.
  14. Young friend of mine decided to buy a penis enlarger off e-bay. When he excitedly unwrapped it,he found a magnifying glass.
  15. Was approached out of the blue by a suited guy in a new jag if i would be interested in felling and clearing 9 mature oaks on one of their most recent building sites in mid norfolk whilst we were taking a tree down for a home owner in a newly occupied part of another of their developments. Having got tangled up with big developers in the past,i sidestepped his invitatation and hope that the poor fellows who do jump in and do it, get paid in a year or two for at least some of the work they do.
  16. Oh crumbs.
  17. Absolutely first class work and an inspiration to carvers of all abilities. Welcome back Tommy.
  18. The fellows i know that drive them,i think to myself when i see them that you've got a horrendous bill coming sooner or later, and its normally sooner when i notice them driving their wife's toyota yaris around for a few weeks while the discos undergoing radical surgery.
  19. Clark's cut n climb jacket is very good in the trees. If ime on the ground or hedge trimming i have a royal navy heavy weather goretex jacket which is made to first class specifications, with a hood big enough to go over my helmet. By coincidence,my son in law is in the navy,so it didnt cost me too much.
  20. Dont get me going on pensions. I started 1 with the pru in 1989 and paid into it every month, they coughed up my final 'pension' last year which is a derisury £64 a month. I should have put it into a building society instead but hindsight is a wonderful thing. So its still blood sweat and sawdust for me and not retirement.
  21. That's funny Paul.
  22. That's so true, ive known it time and again when a conscientious worker who has given the best years of his life, often above and beyond the call, has simply been booted out of the farm gate under the title of 'redundant' . And a 16 year old starts before his old footprints are dry in the mud.
  23. If you're driving one of these modern tractors you should be on at least £12 p/h. Last winter i wanted to drive my truck into a big farmers grain store to get some wheat to feed his pheasants and a big new claas was in the doorway ticking over. No one around so i waited long enough then got in it to try and shift it,for a time i couldnt move it an inch, somehow i got it to lurch forward a couple of feet at a time bleeping and flashing warning lights at me, then i climbed out of it and drove my truck through the gap.
  24. Ok,fair enough,thanks.
