  1. Hi Timtree. We've got a cracking little box trailer for the quad already, carries nearly a ton of rounds, but trying to get the cord out in lengths for the processor. Monkeybusiness. Quick price so far a twin axle (indespnsion units) built to our design c/w ramps for the quad to sit on the trailer for transport to and from site is around the £1000 area. This is from the local agg. engineer who shares the yard with us. Cant see TCF getting anywhere near that. Aggrimog. the skyline would have to be about 500/600 mts long, up a slight hill, round a corner, and up a small set of stairs. we had thought about ringing it all up and renting one of the roofers conveyors to get it over the hedge and into one of our tractor trailers but i'm trying to cut manual handling down as much as possible. thanks for the ideas / help so far guys
  2. Hi all, Well the travelling, caravan dwelling, tarmac laying, transit driving, gits have spoilt it for us. Been looking after a wood for a very good client, thinning, etc. There's no vehicular access from their property but we did a deal with a neighbouring farmer to access through one of his fields ( 2 loads of split seasoned h/wood logs, cheap in my opinion). However, last saturday night / sunday morning at approx 5.30am a transit was picked up on their cctv, driving across the field, through the gap in the hedge we'd cut (removing our temp fence) and three guys moving toward the house. Fortunately they've got magic eye alarms surrounding the property and the intruders set these off before getting anywhere near to stealing anything. UNfortunately, its spooked the client and his wife resulting in them asking us to permanently fence the gap and replant the hedge with as large Hawthorne specimens as possible. (Job done everyone happy) The problem this leaves us with is the fact that we've got approx. 30 tons of cord on the floor, plus another god knows how much still to fell. We've got quad access across their lawn so i'm going to get a small (ish) timber trailer built. ideally to carry about 500 / 750 kg's My problem is, i can't decide between single or twin axle, suspension units or floatation tyres, pure quad trailer, or hybrid quad / road. It would be handy to have a trailer for jobs when the timbers too nice to log to get back to the yard for milling ( got the design drawn for adding a 12v winch for loading), but would this compromise its 'wood going' properties? Not too concerned about ripping the lawn up with the twin axles as the 2 acre lawn gives us plenty of scope for long sweeping turns. Ideas please
  3. is that covered under the new cs678 squirrel removal ticket ?????
  4. i'd stick to your price, remind him of the time spent on the applications. if he does indeed give the work to the bat people, drop him an invoice for the time spent doing the applications / site visits etc. don't be afraid of losing any future work, if he's got the other company in to do this work, you'll be quoting against them in future, guaranteed. just for future, any client we do applications for, or help with, have site visits or anything, are informed that if the work is placed elsewhere we will be charging for the time spent. hope this helps
  5. when i first started up ebay was my preferred shop. not all knackered, and not all nicked. our rayco stumpy was bought off there, came with full history. what i always do is print off the ebay advert showing me as the winning bidder, that way, if it does turn out to be stolen, i'm covered, and can prove who i bought it off so the police ( if they're bothered), can chase up. i also get the seller to sign the receipt and put the serial no. of the item on there. i wouldn't take much for stihl to start a database of serial no.s up but as a lot of kit is insured new for old its not really in their interest.
  6. hi, i'd charge it all separately first price for the initial clear up. again for the felling x amount per cut of the grass x amount for the hedge cutting etc
  7. Cheers buddy We're just the other side of Gainsborough so not too many miles from you. Been working at a large manor house for the last two weeks doing a monster holly hedge reduction and they had intruders on Saturday night. Never went near the house but got them on CCTV rooting round the area where we'd been working. Sent from bed using Arbtalk Mobile App
  8. Stihl FS400 or bigger and get the twin wing mulching blade, also stihl. Cleared miles and miles of footpaths and railway banks. Must be the twin bladed end with the little down turned wings on the end. Use it with an up and down motion, rather than the side by side you'd use with strimmer wire Sent from bed using Arbtalk Mobile App
  9. A good piece of advice I was given early on. With mates or family either charge them the going rate or do it for free. If you charge them mates rates, everyone thinks they're you're mate. If I'm doing it for free I tell the client to let everyone think I charged them the going price. Sent from bed using Arbtalk Mobile App
  10. I've had a wood turner / carver helping himself from my yard for the last 18 months. When asked what I wanted I've always said to just make me the odd piece whenever he feels he's had enough wood to warrant it. Never had a thing even though he's in the yard for two or three bits every week. Saw him at a show the other week and he's had a lovely bowl on display. I pointed out that I quite fancied the bowl. His reply was that he'd knock me 25% off !!!!!!! I paid the full price but told him from now on he'd be paying full price for any timber he wanted. Idiot!!!!! Sent from bed using Arbtalk Mobile App
  11. Had a saw taken off the back of the chip wagon a couple of years ago. Had to drop everything and go and help my dad ( terminal bowel cancer) so just threw the TS410 on the back of the truck. Was just helping him back into his chair and saw a a rote climbing over the barn doors with the saw. Ran out and managed to get the reg no. of his car. Rang and informed the police but also rang the local drug dealer and offered him £50 to get the saw back. I'd got the saw back before the police had even rang me back !!!! The dealer came up with a name and address and the saw was waiting outside when I arrived. After 'negotiations' with the said thief, he even coughed up the £50 reward PMSL Sent from bed using Arbtalk Mobile App
  12. I wouldn't really call putting tracks back on advanced. Any rail guys will have had to do it at some point. Also, now I've got my own chipper, maintenance is any everyday concern. If the choppers not greased its me that pays for repairs Sent from bed using Arbtalk Mobile App
  13. i would have liked a bit of maintenance training. i.e how to put a track on, change blades, check fluids etc.
  14. Nptc course was a waste of time. I put one branch through our Jensen and one branch through a tractor mounted. All the rest was theory Sent from bed using Arbtalk Mobile App
  15. Had to do my SSSTC (Site Supervisors Safety Training Course) (part of CSCS) earlier this year. There were 24 of us in a room for two days, each paying £550+Vat Now i don't doubt the trainer had overheads etc, but earning around £14K for two days work sounds pretty good to me. I just couldnt manage to sit in a classroom full time
  16. looking to put an ad in our local rag for a labourer, come brash dog, and anything else i can think of. I'd like to copy Mr. Blairs ad off here but its waaaaayyyy to long. Thinking along the lines of: WANTED: Labourer for local tree surgeon / landscaping / gardening firm. Crap money, long hours, heavy work. Driving licence essential. 25+ for insurance purposes. Wage dependant on experience. Anyone think thats honest enough ?

  18. My boys 14 ATM and is adamant he's joining the firm from school. I've tried my best to dissuade him, much better to take over his Grandads shop fitting business ( he earns five times what I do ) but he's having none of it. I think this scheme would be ideal for him. Anyone know the website to research it. Not being lazy honest. Sent from bed using Arbtalk Mobile App
  19. Our local RSPB site traps them on a daily basis. They were looking for someone to "euthanise" them. Apparently I was a little too enthusiastic for them Sent from bed using Arbtalk Mobile App

  22. we cleared a site for a new ASDA for a very large construction co. £14K payment was received 6 MONTHS late. (we had an agreement for 30 days payment) The next job we were offered, a Sainsbury's in Melton Mowbray, i asked for 50% up front. Their reply was "Simons don't do payment upfront" My reply to that was "DN22 don't do 7 months credit !!!" Needless to say we haven't worked for them since.
  23. Hi all, Been driving for about 25+ years now and thought i was fairly good. For 25 of the above i've had my HGV ticket too. Traveling North bound on the A1 last Sunday in the chip truck got flashed by a stationary camera. Not a problem i thought, under 70 so ok. (actually doing 68) WRONG !!!! Apparently, the speed limit for a sub 7.5 ton vehicle on a dual carriage way is 60 !!! Either its changed recently or i've been speeding daily for the last 20 odd years Luckily the camera was behind so i'll be trying to blag off on the points
  24. Come home, kettle on, fire up the mac n sit reading how you're all macho types. PMSL
