  1. Hi, I've taken my son climbing in Clumber Park a couple of times. Got out of the way and just got on with it. Don't know what they'd say if they'd have caught us Lol When I was practicing for my 38/39 I ask one of the local farmers if I could use trees on his land He was fine with that Sent from bed using Arbtalk Mobile App
  2. 10 man kit in each van, Personal kit in every vehicle door pocket. Disposable eye squirters in every van. We seem to get through loads of the eye squirts so just have them loose on the dash boards. Getting an eye full of crap is considered a perk of the job
  3. bought my first plaslode out of the local admag three years ago for £150. its worked perfectly until this winter when it stopped firing. Took it to my local hire shop and he got it fixed (simple, 'o' ring had perished) and serviced in an hour. We've got two now, plus the finishing nailer. Don't know if you'd get the same fixability with a Hitachi, although their power tools are good quality (we've got two jigsaws and an half inch router)
  4. I think everybody i know started with an old LDV Ours was an ex council 'R' reg with the transit engine and box. Brilliant, never let me down in the four years we had it. Apart from tyres the only thing it had was a clutch, and a month later a clutch cable. The two crew cab Transits ( 53 and an 04 reg) we run in the tree teams are total rubbish, wheel bearings every year, new diff in one last year, clutch is going in the other one. BUT..... They do get hammered on a daily basis, overloaded (allegedly), pulling a tracked chipper and trailer. I had this conversation with my local mech. fitter the other week. He's the dogs doo dah's with anything mechanical. His advice, bite the bullet and get German, Mercedes, or VW. We've already got a Caddy, and a Transporter coming, for the gardeners.
  5. tie it to the back of your truck, straight to the nearest scrappers. £200 for half an hours work. Good money
  6. None this week buddy
  7. Did a site last year, small garden, 43 40' Conifers, all to come out. Stumps, the lot. Very nice job for us, managed to fell 40 of the 43 with no problems, had a subby helping me cut them up while i felled. I had to nip out in the afternoon to price a job (emptied the chip truck at the same time), got a call from the subby to say he'd taken the phone line out!!! On my way back passed a BT chap sat in his truck, told him the story and he came and fixed it there and then for £60 (cash). Asked the subby to pay half and he was gobsmacked !!!! "Why should i pay for damages on your site" Suffice to say he got no more work from me. The kicker was, if the subby had felled the offending conifer in 358 out of 360 degrees, he'd have missed the line !!!!!!!
  8. use the above on all chains above 30" bar. excellent tool
  9. Got a cabinet full of the 12 bore noise making thingies...and i would use one if needed But i'd also end up in prison while the scroat i'd winged sued me for every penny (and get it)
  10. The wood is approx 700mts accross his lawns, thought about the ply route but would need about 200 of em !!!!! We've got a little 4 x 3 trailer that will just fit through the gap (on a stairway) we've used it behind a quad for transporting aggregates up a garden before. It'd be an ideal excuse for the firm to buy a quad ( been wanting one for a while), but i'm a very light sleeper atm due to our local travelling community 'wandering' through my back garden on a monthly basis (last visit, last thursday evening 03:30am). if i had a quad in the container, or garage, i'd never sleep
  11. Hi all, me AGAIN !!!!!! Just been given a 4 Acre wood to manage, not huge, but a fair bit of wood to come out as its not been touched (hardly) in the last 20 years. A local guy started it 2 years ago, but gave up as he got snowed under with wood. He's actually left about 30 ton cut to length on the wood floor. The main problem with the wood is extraction. There will be access available in Autumn through a farmers field. Other than that, there is limited access (4' width) through the clients garden. Thought about buying a quad for skidding and getting the wood already felled out, but round here the ASBO's pinch them for fun. They recently dismantled the complete rear wall of a brick built garage to get one. Could get hold of a compact tractor, but feel it'd destroy the guys manicured lawns. Then i thought of using one of the old ride on's. Take the deck off and it'd have halfway decent ground clearance. The only problem would be its ability to tow a small trailer. If i could get it to pull 3/400kg's it'd be a go'er Anyone have experience of a similar situation ?
  12. rang them this afternoon, explained our hours of operation. the kicker was that they wanted £30's worth of softwood.....
  13. Thanks for the replies guys........ Sundays are just another workday for me. By 9am i was at the yard loading up the first of my two deliveries. After Sunday lunch i was back out getting the trucks and chipper ready for monday morning. The problem was the fact that the call was at the crack of dawn on a sunday. any other day of the week (saturdays included) i'd be up and at it, so there wouldn't be a problem. If i'm ringing clients, i ring AFTER 9.00am and BEFORE 8.30pm, unless otherwise agreed. Its not rocket science, its being considerate of other peoples situations. Likewise, we never start the chipper before 8:30am, all noisy work in the workshop at home stops at 7:30pm, and if we need to inconvienience anyone, we'll seek permission, and explain whats happening, BEFORE we start work. Politeness is the cheepest form of work we can do for our clients.
  14. Can't believe it.!!!!!! 07:42 this morning and someone thinks its ok to ring wanting logs !!!!!! FFS some people have no consideration. Couldn't find the phone in time so the call went to answer phone I know its a little petulant, but i'm going to ring them back at half eleven tonight to see when they want them delivered
  15. Only had an inch here so delivering as normal
  16. Heard nothing but bad reports about the petrol ones. Mate of mine has sunk about £4000 into repairs on his 02 reg
  17. Hi all, Just quoted to remove a large Yew. The tree is approx 60 high, after felling and sorting there should be three big lumps around 2' dia, and around 14 / 16' long. All nice and straight, although one has grown over the bracing chains that were on it. The tree owner has said that he wants a price for logging the lot up, but i've said i'd prefer to take it away for milling, so would he accept split and ready to burn hardwood logs in exchange. The question is, roughly whats Yew worth in the round, and whats it worth per cubic foot planked up, but green. thanks in advance Dave
  18. yep.. had it 20 odd years ago moved to a new, office based job..VERY stressful. Blisters round the whole right side of my waist, burning, stabbing pains Went to my Doc's who gave me some purple stuff to paint on, waste of time. One of the secretaries at work said her mum had it in the eyes and the doc had given her some tablets that cleared it up in a couple of weeks. Back to the docs who said that the tablets in question were very expensive so they only gave them to priority patients !!!!!!!!! After a rant at him, and offers to pay for the medecine privately he relented, two weeks later, good as gold !!!!! Hopefully the NHS has moved on from those days......but maybe not
  19. ordered a 201T today i'll give an update in a couple of weeks
  20. Hi all, Looking to buy a couple of new climbing saws in the next couple of weeks. The old 200T's spend more time on the bench than at work at the minute Got no experience with the new 201's but am also interested in the new husky climber. The only problem with the Husky saw would be the fact that there's no dealer within 20 odd miles of me, whereas there's 3 Stihl dealers within a 10 min drive. Thoughts and reviews please Thanks
  21. Done 8 days shooting so far with poor results on all days. The shoot i take my two cockers beating on have had better results but still well down on last year. Just bought my boy a BSA Super 10 so we'll be tapping the local farmers up for some rat and rabbit shooting soon
  22. Where ? LOL
  23. £40 a builders bag here We sell it as 'B' grade. Offcuts, willow, anything thats crap really
