  2. Hi all, Thinking about booking myself on the Lantra Proffesional tree inpectors course. Before i go getting a second mortgage to buy the course books i thought i might ask on here, see if anyones got any no longer needed list as follows: Lonsdale, D. (1999). Principles of Tree Hazard and management, Research for Amenity Trees No 7, Stationery Office, London Mattheck, C 7 Breloer, H. (1994). The Body Language of Trees, Research for Amenity Trees No 4, Stationery Office, London Strouts, R.G & Winter, T.G (1994). Diagnosis of Ill Health in Trees, Research for Amenity Trees No 2, Stationery Office, London. Davis, C., Fay, N & Maynors, C. (2000). Veteran Trees: a guide to risk and responsibility. Englisg Nature, Peterborough. Shigo, A.L (1991). Modern Aboriculture. Shigo & Tree Associates, Durham, NH, USA Weber, K., & Mattheck, C. (2003). Manual of Wood Decay in Trees, The Arboriculural Association Recommendations for Tree Work. BS 3998. (1989 with 1990 amendment) British Standards Institute, London. Obviously, i don't expect the books FOC, and am more than happy to pay any postage. All help greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dave
  3. We've had a set of 10 rung Hailo's for the last five years. Ladders, steps, adjustable foot. Absolutely brilliant. Got the 15 rung set but too cumbersome for my liking. The adjustable foot is the best thing for me but the catches are very flimsy. We also have Zarges and they're better built but no adjustable foot. The 10 ring set are knackered and will be getting more Hailo's. Sent from bed using Arbtalk Mobile App

  5. Buy the bags with the loops on the bottom. When loading, we put the bags on from the rear and leave one of the loops on top of the tailgate. This makes it easier to tip over Sent from bed using Arbtalk Mobile App
  6. Hi Kevin, thanks for your post, its a shame its not you in charge of the Stihl section. You're spot on saying your front counter staff are good, Peter, the guy i aim for when i do come in, is absolutely brilliant, always pleasant and helpful. i hope, in return i'm just as pleasant. The chap i had a problem with is usually quite good, must have just been a bad day. However, his 'bad day' has cost platts 4 saw sales, and two hedge cutter sales in 2013, plus numerous repairs which i have neither the time or inclination to do. To be honest, i only come into the Tuxford branch now if i'm passing. All my service parts i buy elsewhere. I buy my saws off another local dealer in Retford, who usually gets to within £20 or £30 of internet prices, i also use him for my consumables. The last saw i bought, an ms261, he was £25 cheaper than jonsies !!! and before i'm slated, i never gave him the price i'd looked up on the internet to compare. I always research the prices of equipment i'm about to buy, having spent three years at one firm i worked at being responsible for spending around £2m per annum, you get to be a little jaded when it comes to suppliers complaining about profit margins and the rep turns up in a brand new BMW. ( or in Platts's case brand new Discovery TDV6) The 201t (rubbish saw) i bought last January came with all the paperwork attached to the box, turns out the dealer i'm currently using paid £390 ish, plus VAT for it. suffice to say i paid a significant markup on that price, but he matched the price i'd found online so everyone was happy. The dealer had made a good profit, and i'd got the saw at a competitive price. Every business has to make a profit or it goes under, i understand this perfectly, but asking customers to pay overinflated prices isn't the way to build a loyal customer base. my argument with the chap at Platts was that if i'm not competitive with my prices, i either get competitive or get out of the business. His argument was, i either pay their prices or go elsewhere, which i did. i've thought about having to fix things under warranty. I can appreciate that Stihl probably pay significantly less that the £30/£40 per hour that dealers get to charge Joe public but a saws warranty only lasts a year, and i've got some saws that are 7 and 8 years old so you'd get to charge full rates for repairs over the full lifetime of the saw.
  7. so, under all this fat I've got the body of a greek sculpture have i ?
  8. we bought a load of gear from British Waterways about 3 years ago. speaking to the guys on site when we went to collect and they were saying that Fountains had been awarded the contract Nationwide
  9. I run two crewcab transits, one with a 9 CBM chip box, and the other is a plain drop side tipper. Perfect for most situations. In an ideal world the drop side would be a single cab tipper c/w tail lift. Looking to the future I'm thinking that a 7.5 tonner equipped with ro-ro skips might be better. The variation in body types would only be limited by the available storage space. Couple of chip boxes, dump body for aggregates/logs, flat body with pins for cord, the list goes on. Unfortunately there isn't one truck that'll do everything. A 4x4 is essential for any offroad work, suits the image, but your limited for space. A transit type 3.5 tonner, is good for space, but really crap off road. A 4x4 3.5 tonner would be good, but very rare, and very expensive. Sent from bed using Arbtalk Mobile App
  10. I'd do this. But do it by email, if the reply is positive, print a copy off and keep it in the truck. Oh, and let the rest of us know as this is something we do on sites but not on the road yet Sent from bed using Arbtalk Mobile App
  11. cheers bud. the Pear looks good in the daylight
  12. Hi all, Fetched this monster back to the yard. It's Walnut, been dead standing for over a year, approx 14 feet long and approx. 30" at the butt. Anyone have an idea of its value. Currently having a procut mill built but haven't got the space to store until its built so its got to go. Slight shake in the very Center but looks good. Sent from bed using Arbtalk Mobile App
  13. Been given quite a few knackered old saws over the years, they usually clutter the back of the container up. We get a customer a month asking to sharpen or sort out their b&q specials out. Sent from bed using Arbtalk Mobile App
  14. We're up to about 130 likes on our page. Keep putting pics up, I tell everyone when I price a job to check the page for pics of past work. Put it on your trucks. I've got to admit that I don't maintain it enough. But I get about a job a month from it, some big ones too. 17. I've been thinking for a while I ought to get a smallish rope for small trees. Something about 15mts long. Often don't bother with lugging a full length rope about. Sent from bed using Arbtalk Mobile App
  18. Got a 201 in January. PANTS! PANTS! PANTS!!!!!!!! I Like a 14" bar on my climbers and this won't run one at all, had to knock it down to a 12 and its still gutless. Takes ages for the revs to pick up. Defo Husky for me next time Sent from bed using Arbtalk Mobile App
  19. Just got notice of this. Very sad, we were on a callout about half a mile from this. Sirens all day Retford: Man killed by falling tree - Worksop Guardian
  20. When I first started on my own I bought Ryobi +1 range. They were very good and cheap enough to abuse, also cheap enough to expand. By the time I'd finished I'd got everything from 4 different drills, jigsaw, circular saw, radio, torch, and about a dozen batteries. About 2 years ago got offered a Makita 18v LXT screwdriver. WOW! When we're decking we can put 1000 screws a day in. The speed of the driver was a revelation. The Makita DAB radio was next, quickly followed by a combi drill / impact driver kit. Can't recommend them enough. Sent from bed using Arbtalk Mobile App
  21. I've just set a young lad on after letting two others go. I was despairing of ever finding a good young 'un until Daniel landed on my doorstep. What a breath of fresh air. On his second day he arrived early, had the yard gates open, and was waiting by the trucks before I'd even got my boots on, all unasked. On site he's always looking for something to do. I was accosted by a neighbour of today's client to price a job up. I'd been gone about 15 mins and when I got back he'd raked the whole site up, fuelled the saws up and was having a go at sharpening one of the small ground saws. Suffice to say, after two weeks he's had a £1:50 an hour pay rise and is now on more than most of his mates. Hopefully he'll stay and be a valued asset of the company. We also operate a "job and knock" policy. Yesterday we'd done by one, I dropped everyone off and went and split a load of logs for a couple of hours. Everyone wins Sent from bed using Arbtalk Mobile App
  22. Hi all, got to quote for a job which requires 8 No. 6" x 6" x 8' oak beams. anyone want to pm me prices and availability. thanks, Dave

  25. loads on gumtree. we're looking at buying a couple of bits of kit. the favourite one we've had is where they tell you Parcel Force will let you pay on delivery as long as its an ESCROW voucher which you buy from the post office. You have to send them a photo or scan of the receipt, including the bar code to prove YOU'RE honest and are going to pay. Unfortunately, once they have the barcode of the Escrow receipt then they can cash it in !! Also, the brother in law used to work for Parcel Force and according to him they dont do any COD deliveries !!! Be aware, buy nothing unseen, if its cheap enough to risk, its cheap enough to drive with the cash. We were looking at a timber trailer with grab on ebay. Its in Hereford, about 300 miles from us. I'd have still driven to have a look at it but alas, the usual messages came back. Free delivery anywhere in the uk, send me your details to contact you outside of ebay...etc Muppets
