  1. I would never commence any work having not confirmed prior to it what the price was. And if they fall down whilst you stand there then you really wouldn't have wanted to climb it. I would ask yourself how long the entire trip\job took you the other night, then add this to the cost of what you would charge for the works without the emergency work. When you send him theinvoice accompany a letter detailing that with the travel time, transport costs, and riskief nature of this particular job your invoice for the other day I x amount, the total cost for the other work to be completed is y, and your grand total is z. He mat be ad good as gold about it all. He may expect you to have priced it all as if the callout hasn't happened. Such situations can bight you on the backside if not dealt with and confirmed beforehand. As for cost of the emergency works with travel time, and also taking into consideration any loss of earnings/time as having to do this callout then 180-250 would be tolerable. If he gets grumpy then use it as an opportunity to educate him of your professional status and kindly remind him Tha you advised he did this work several months ago. His method of tree management is what councils call reactive tree management, it can prove to be costly if things go wrong
  2. Tavistock saws sell shlek gloves, big wide wrist strap and anti vibe in hand . They're fingerless gloves, in my personal opinion they are very good and quite durable. Mine lasted years. Also do pressups on knuckles. Seems to help me that is, I have starts doing pressup sets on wrists too with wrists bent round, think martial arts people do it for strength or something
  3. Is that the new delorean?
  4. Direct signs 102 quid. its cheaper, and does look well made, and you get a carry bag. Got to love a good carry bag for stuff. Guess it means it can be flung on the back of the van easier and ripped/damaged a lot sooner. Which is always a good thing when you run a company, wouldn't you agree Benjy? And if its foldable and in a bag, it has less chance of being left on the wagon when tipping up chip etc, as it possibly may get stowed away in tool lockers!!! By the way, many aspects of this post are sarcastic and scrutiny is not required
  5. Andy MacP, did you leave one of the large lower limbs;crown removed reduced back-still resting on property, and then winch it back uprightOr did you completely reduce it away and then winch back upright?
  6. I often ask them what they thought it would be. If I want the job I will indulge in their desire to 'get a bit of a deal' Sometimes you can get a sense that they're going to haggle with you. Whether you top load the price to accommodate this and negotiate accordingly is up to you!
  7. Do you have terms and conditions of business? Theres some the arb associations AWG produced if you wish to use them. Check under the 'help for arborist' icon
  8. km130r, had mine about 6-8years. it developed a sputtering bogging down fault after four years, dealers did numerous things but after two months back to same problem. I ended up drilling two 4mm holes in exhaust system, and it doesn't miss a beat now. eu regs depict that manufacturers have to comply by this and that and its been a hard task for some to adapt their machines to comply. however, my km with fibre glass extension shaft hedge cutter and saw head is very effective within my business. the extra power of 130r really does cut the mustard when it comes to shaping up a hawthorn hedge or crown lifting some of the harder woods in the uk. the grey plastic inserts in the end wear out and cause the heads to twist a little but easily sourced and relatively cheap. was told by a sthl dealer to only use hp ultra (green oil) as a oil mix for four mix engines. use it in all machines now, works well in my experience.
  9. Hamdog, google self employed tax payments on account. Will explain far better than I could. Thanks jaime
  10. Unfortunately it seems that many of us are hypocrites, me too for the first 4 years of business in 1996. We complain when we quote a job and the customer then gets the job done cheap by a cowboy or even a reliable tradesman but with little specific knowledge. Ultimately this costs the customer more in the long run with ill health etc etc to their trees. Yet amazingly, we seem it perfectly ok to grasp a rough knowledge of an industry i.e accountancy, and do their job, ultimately costing us money, whether that be through tax expenditure on our behalf or not claiming for stuff we could have, should have and would have had we not tried to do everything ourselves. Unless your turnover was £3000, or a figure of similar size id really consider professional advice. You are a professional tradesman, get the right advice. Don't forget, if your tax bill is 800quid, you will have to pay half of that on account for the tax year that you have not yet filed your accounts for. This ensures that as do employees pay immediately, that in some part businesses do too for earnings during any tax year. Good luck chap
  11. I tried airstream, wore them around the house for a good two hours. They were light, but I have wide feet with a high arch and the boney bit above foot is slightly raised, I couldn't wait to get them off, I felt crippled by them. Ended up getting a pair of prabos, class 2 goretex, 160quid. Just my experience. I wanted air streams, but just didn't work for me. If you have stupid is as stupid does feet like me, I'd be reluctant to mail order air streams
  12. Dalton trees, molecular techniques in relation to taxonomy may prove many biota to be subject to taxonomic re-classification, the futures exciting in taxonomy! And to be totally correct it's Mahoberberis, so it would appear that with mahonoberberis you may be incorrect.
  13. Muppets!!! It's hornbeam, isn't everything?
  14. No rush,if you havnt already put it together, double check the thckness of the metal on fly wheel where the blade bolts screw in. Mine had worn thin and the upper edge of bolts could be felt, I had a narrow strip of metal welded in. But without removing fly wheel a true all around weld couldnt be achieved. Its worn wear the branches over the years touch it. Do both sides to balance as best as poss. Many will advise not to,due to bearing fatigue increasing. But weighd against a retro kit fly wheel upgrade cost, its worth it, in my personal opinion. Also, grease splines on rollersif its the old school ones, and. Change the anvil around.
  15. I had similar with a company that used to use the tpo app method of gaining work. On several occasions, with me clearly written as the acting agent on the app, the company; based further away than the normal competition, so maybe trying to expand into the area, sent out business marketing material. I got wise to it and say to customers that they may get hassled by other firms trying to poach the work. On three occasions I had the same company name mentioned to me by customers as having contacted them, I rang them up and kindly informed them that I did not pay for advertising to get clients for them to then take from under my nose. It hasn't happened again but I guarantee it will now I said it. I pay for my advertising, and market my business for my benefit, if someone felt that it was fair game to exploit the system in this way and I was on the receiving end of what I deem to be immoral business, and they profited from my marketing and advertising then I'd send them a beautifully written Xmas card
  16. Hi, the Arborist Working Group (AWG) put together some terms and conditions of business. They are located under the help for arborists section on the AA website, some other stuff up there that may be of use to you as you start up your business
  17. I run a carlton sp2010, very strong machine. done a few 50"plus stumps with it and it keeps on going. Access is 29" as per most this size, but recently been hiring a fsi st20, small machine, very effective, and very narrow, google it, many people are raving about fsi and durability etc around my area.
  18. Ive always used the Makita double siders, they own dolmar and robin, so when a deal is available with any of them makes in suppliers I swipe them up. Great machines, would not entertain any other hedgecutter, although do hear echo are good too for fine topiary work etc. I can get between 6-8 months without sharpening them, and even then it isn't desperate snagging of stuff to be removed
  19. Arbgrunt Is your helmet the same as triggers broom then? hehe
  20. Got 7 years out of stretchair trousers, still using them but bought another pair for the inevitable. 3 years, treeme aquastops, put as new insole in them though as they can hurt some people. Just bought prabos boots, bit of a niggle in the leather and its giving me jip, dubbin at the ready to soften up.
  21. That is a lot of motor for 2500, could help someone out that me thinks
