  1. Paul, The awg's truck book article, that Ian pulled created, did that go into aa website help for arborists?
  2. Never heard this saying before, but will never forget which way round clocks go at this time of year again.
  3. AA website help for arborist icon has a briefing note written by Peter Annett, who I believe advised government on the 2012tree regs. There is also a guide on the 5837 doc too written by the chair of the steering group Richard Nicholson. Have a butchers on there. I think there was a thread in here highlighting this to arbtalkers but god knows where it is.
  4. Tree roots in the built environment. Very well written in my opinion, and quite all encompassing. Good starter book:thumbup1:
  5. French, wee wee geoffphwe. German was my gcse, French though, oohlalah your wife will love it.
  6. I finished studying last year after a seven year process from level two to level six,as I went higher up the educational realm and worked the brain my memory was bulletproof.. Past last exam in September 2012,and since then have just been focusing on business family and socialising, my ability to remember stuff that's is daily calls to make, checking things, jobs to do list etc is poor now. When I have lots of plates juggling I make several to do lists and add and delete as and when. When those plates are reduced to only three or four i don't make lists as i assume i will remember. I end up with ahead full of nothing but frustration at not doing tasks etc. for me, I often attribute forgetfulness to not task managing appropriately and therefore filling head with stuff that I needn't remember. The old saying, use it or lose it is very true. Geoff have you considered learning another language?
  7. On my prof dip mang day there was a chap from Dublin, he said he'd had a real nightmare revising as the laws in relation to tree preservation were different. In some cases the laws were not relevant, I wonder if the common law rights in relation to pruning tree on neighbouring land etc are the same. This is not something I was aware of and is only info told to me from said gentleman..
  8. Currently on 'enduro at' not to bad for wear and tear, ok off road. Not a experienced off roader so knowledge of varying performances from different manufacturers is not my forte. At 75 quid a tyre I didn't complain!!!
  9. This is what I refer to, possibly not as clearly as I could or should have, but was my main point in the thread arbtalkers stop picking. Apologies for the derail. 5k to some people in a certain situ can seem like a million. Depends what type of financial deals, loans, mortgages etc people have embarked on in their life. At 20year old a loan to buy second hand chipper scared the life out of me, now I'd smile at such figures.
  10. Dave, my original post is not in relation to people's feelings, it's in relation to people reading posts and focusing and niggling on one particular word and therefore resulting in a breakdown of such lively discussion, as the original poster has to reiterate what they are saying and then end up justifying it with post after post. Just niggliness in my opinion. Face to face my sense of humour is sarcastic, but as said you can not sense tone of voice or facial expression to well in a forum. I do not use other forums so can only comment on how see this forum(at times). I'm not one for applying the 'there there cream' to people that take offence easily, but find reading people reiterating/rewording posts to have to make a perfectly clear point slightly boring. I have often refrained from commenting on the pat on the back issue as that's a societal issue and not something I'm interested in.
  11. As is often the case at this time of year, some companies that work for local authorities and the like have a sudden influx of work to enable LAs to use up their budgets. Whilst these companies may not require 25 staff during the year and all year, at this time of year, they are crying out for staff. I just thought that this may be a good thread for would be free lancers/ sub-contractors and small companies to put up there contact details area of living etc for LA contractors to utilise. Some people are flat out at the moment, others are concerningly quiet, if you feel that you could offer your services to another firm for a couple of weeks, whether it be you, a team, or you and your truck and chipper, may be you should put your self up for availability. Just a thought thats all.
  12. Not spelling, but more how sentences can be interpreted by others. Sometimes sense people having to continually reiterate posts to prevent a backlash.
  13. Dear all, I have been reading and posting for nearly 5 years and I have to say that in that time the forum; at times, has become a hostile place. Whilst I appreciate that some people are not able to express their opinions in writing as well as they may converse, this doesn't mean that every single sentence needs to be analysed and dissected until arbtalkers find fault in what has been written. Is it not about time that rather than jumping down people's throats about the manner in which certain sentences are formed, or one word highlighting, we should ask a couple of confirming questions, enabling posters to perhaps confirm their point in a different way, rather than feel like they should never post again through fear of retribution. We do not have to pat each others backs for sharpening a saw correctly, but if we feel that something is not as we would see it we should be able to say. should we not be so bitter and angry;at times, towards each other. There are a lot of knowledgeable people on here with a wealth of personal experiences and knowledge that should be available. Some of that knowledge may not be relevant to all,but should none the less not be scrutinised because of how it is written. The only way to get through arbtalk at the moment, at times, is to be second guessing what everybody will respond to your post, and then amend your writing to correct It, before having to justify it. See the number of semi colons in this post! Come on folks, stop dissecting posts to get a score. Nothing wrong with heated discussion, but a bit of respect for each other wouldn't go a miss; at times........lol Feel free to discuss/dissect this post.haha:001_tt2: Purely my opinion, not something that has been discussed with third parties or site moderators or other users, and should in no Way be construed as anything other than an arbtalkers take on things. Keep safe, and keep smiling, life's too short!!!
  14. Fair play, took literally a minute to do. Very simple. Even I managed it. urge all to help him with his survey/research. Just click click clickety click Out of interest how had is it to create survey monkey?
  15. I am 16st8lb, started royal marine training year ago. press ups, ten different varieties, burpees, bastardos, tuck jumps, interval sprint training, used to do Thai boxing and the stretches from that are very good for flexibility. Going to the pub is good for the soul but catches up with you as does clubbing. in my personal experience, you work hard, train hard, after few weeks your work eases the stiffness of training and vice versa, the circle continues. cardio work will increase the stamina, so that at 3pm when the arms are getting lactic and the body your fitness pulls you through. I have been training four times a week last six months and stretches every other day. also find that getting the body warm prior to climbing helps. Bit of rushing about pre-climb and even putting up your own ladders etc helps get muscles warm. Also, when have a shower stretch off the muscles that you have been using that day. I.e. legs arms and back. My diets crap, but when I pay attention to it get pasta and veg and fruit etc down me see the difference all round, also keep well hydrated, you will be surprised at the lethargic effects of poor water intake prior to, during and after exercise (climbing included)
  16. Kids awake!!! See you Monday night chaps!!!! The sad thing is, I even considered saying see you tonight just incase I popped in later.... to avoid being seen as bad parent.. Does that mean I am getting addicted to arbtalk? Haha.
  17. Shouldnt that read 'Hangers, slugs and electric cars' I presume you were refering to work life??? Just incase Mrs Humphries reads arbtalk whilst you are away to keep in touch with you!!!!
  18. Remember speaking to you about this at pest seminar in london, I always looked on in ore at the pics you have of you out with the boys climbing trees and fungi finds. If a situation such as yours arose, and the reason for moving was for their benefit or quality of life, and hearing you say how at the weekends you spend every waking minute with them then its about that compromise isnt it. If you went home, went the pub friday to see your old mates and then played football saturday afternoon, and golf sunday morning, and went out for dinner on sunday to spend time with kids then you would know you need to redress it. The bit that sprung to mind then was if, god forbid, something happened to you, would the corporation replace you in a flash? Push for that four day week. Look at things you would need to implement at work to enable it to be accepted by gaffers and present it to them proprerly. Sounds like it was all ready at the back of the mind so go for it David
  19. It is very easy to start justifying to wives and family etc, that the reason we work is for this house, that car, that holiday, the kids bikes, but if you speak to kids/families that have lost a loved one at young age, they would hand you back that bike in a flash to see their pop again. I remember dong a big job when I was starting out in 1996. Managed to get a job working for local factory pruning back the trees and some maintnenance. When we'd finished I said to chap 'you've done well in life,' His response was seven days a week... When i spoke to his wife at the office she said, its a shame really, all this and yet we do not see him as he doesnt return home till late every night. Even sundays' I looked at his wealth and thought wouldnt mind all that though!!! But its true what they say, you only get out what you put in. So work hard (possibly) have more money. However, spend as much time with your kids as you can and it will be equally rewarding. Mine are asleep at minute. But every minute is time missed watching them grow up. Of course there needs to be consideration for everything in moderation, as they need elelments of food shelter provision but certainly makes you think! Again, good find steve!
  20. If my nan smelt like poplar id have hosed her down (bless her soul) Dog muck springs to my mind!!!!
  21. Blimming eck!!!! Just gulped when reading that. Spend loads of time with the kids, but they would love more. Impossible to justify not spending more time with them. Id say this has just dumped arbtalk out the window for many this weekend..... haha. What made you search for that steve? Shall be thinking about this story everyday from now, thanks for the kick up the backside. Going to reserve a table at mcdonalds now!!!!!
  22. This maybe a bit old school, but then some company owners still are, but have you considered a disc. If I was recruiting and someone took the time to produce and post a disc id be thinking along the lines of the chap seems to have initiative, which guess what??? Is what most employers are looking for in staff. In my opinion, this is a very good idea.. Now ask the moderators to delete the thread so that all your competition for jobs do not do the same!!!!! haha! Website of work is good idea too. Not sure which would take longer to set up though...

  25. Don't know you that we'll, but from what I gather I anticipate you would have dropped the brash straight into the chipper. I along with many can only dream of being half like you. Your engineering genius cedar thread highlights your true depth in arb work... A true inspirational arborist... All hail Bolam....
