  1. as said by others... fourtrak is the better bet!
  2. really dont know!!! my wrists both ache as soon as i get a lump which wont go easily, i think because of the wrist problem i then start to swing the axe slightly awkwardly which soon wears me out....... what height is your chopping block? i have mine slightly lower than my waist height so im never arcing my back to much, every one else says its too high but it works for me!!
  3. you work all day long at the same pace.... all is good until the bit that wont split, you swing harder, then abit harder, try angling the axe as it hits to follow the grain... still wont go so you try that bit harder... i find altering my position & rhythm helps lots!!!!
  4. keep them off the ground with pallets an cover at least the top with tarps, wood doesnt dry well when its 5' degrees for weeks on end!!!! best bet is stop them from getting wet in the first place
  5. can anybody give me any ideas on pricing freshly cut timber?? ive recently been offered some cherry, some walnut & some apple, not great quantities but some nice timber . any ideas how to value it??
  6. i have two customers around the gatwick area who need over grown land clearing, does anyone know of a farm contractor who has a tractor mounted mulcher?? both are too overgrown for a flail to make much impression
  7. my grandparents farm house used to use one of these, its now heating a woodworking workshop, they get through a lot of wood but usefull in the right situation
  8. glad to hear it turned out well ben, this was a good learning curve for you, you will undoubtedly have the odd unhappy customer, we all do!! you need to remember all the compliments you get from your customers along with repeat orders & recomendations, these speak far more for customer relations than one moany old git!!!! you know what to do next time....!!! good luck!

    No oak???

last season i sold untold loads of oak as had a big lot come in at once, kept it seperate & people loved it!! most repeat customers seem disappointed im now 'only' doing mixed hardwood!!!!!!!!!!!
  10. i find if your legs are working hard enough you wont have much weight on your backside most of the time, when i'm resting downhill etc i tend to sit slightly 'across' the saddle, if your out enjoying cycling as a hobby/pastime then try a slightly wider more padded saddle & shorts/ leggings with good padding, its a very individual choice, what is comfy for some wont be for others!!!!!!!!
  11. send your truck to paddington springs @ wembley, it wont help if you do get a tug an weighed but if your truck sits level whilst loaded (over) it may stop you attracting attention
  12. loads & loads over the years but the best on site bodge was 20 tonne 360 with knackered alternator, all electronic contol, we strapped a battery charger & a petrol generator to the machine to keep it working!!!!!!!! oh an if any dads out there are struggling doing your daughters hair...... small cable ties work wonders!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  13.
  14. bit too far for me mate, i think a member called john burgess is more your way.
  15. definatly, ive damaged my wrist's too many times over the years, if i work for a day with orange 'grippy' gloves my forearms all swell up, wrist's ache like crazy!! those gloves are fantastic bu you need to be aware of that extra strain.
  16. ive also recently started wearing glasses, cant remember the make of frame but mine came from tesco optician's, they are the flexi metal type, you literally bend them in half & they spring back, amazing things!!! with regards to safety goggles, you need to look for skiing type goggles, they are wider, i buy mine from b.o.c. gas & gear shop, they fit fine over the glasses. they are a pain but you will get used to them!!
  17. my yard is is within spitting distance to dame judi dench, chris coleman & singer from boyzone shane lynch, no firewood logs delivered but i have been caught short an used the w.c at mr colemans pad, in effect a 'log delivery'..........!!!!!!!!
  18. it will get worse before it gets better....... doesnt matter what trade you are in, things are hard out there, italy, greece......ireland, the uk's own deficit, all adding to an already stressed system, keep firm with your payment terms, if you're on invoice terms then stick to that credit limit you have set them, if they cant pay you £500 they sure as hell wont pay you £1500 in 2 weeks time...
  19. i been lucky, 2 x 076 from fleabay.. non runners! the 051 was the same, v cheap!!! i also agree with your thinking on 044, guess everyone has different needs for their saws!!!
  20. As a result the diesel will 'go off' if stored too long............. it gets stolen from us long before it can ever go off!!!!!!!!! i think in fairness it as a fairly long 'shelf life' same as before any fuel sat around for a period of time will deteriote, moisture an injection systems dont make a good mix!!!!!!
  21. red derv, as we know it is being phased out, due to excess something,,,, sulpher maybe, there is an alternative which i think is similar money to red, i dont think the farm industry plant operators, etc could continue if they had to pay roadside prices, its bad enough atm,
  22. the older stihls are better i think, 051, 056, 075, 076.... all cracking saws for milling
  23. dont know how to put up a link but search for 'u-pol clear#1' amazing stuff, flat it down with some 1200 grit wet paper for less gloss finish, aerosol has a fan type spray, i use a 3m mask with this though, the fumes arent good for you!!!!
  24. most of my clients seem to prefer 8" !!!!!!!!! lots of my customers have small grates anyway, i do 8-9 inch mainly then store the bigger stuff elsewhere. you cant keep them all happy mate, you need to work out your biggest market an go from there, this changes from street to street, village to town etc etc
  25. JAMES PAGE; JP SERVICES,07786912445. very helpful guy, with a huge hiab!! i cant recommend him enough, tell him rob the mechanic passed on his number!! he is based just outside of crawley, hope he can help you out!!!
