  1. All of a sudden, the sumach doesn't sound quite so bad after all.
  2. So Nigella, when was the last time you made sumach fritters?
  3. You've got me so wrong. I'm actually highly sophisticated in my tastes... ... and much prefer Heinz's salad cream
  4. You wouldn't want to be down wind of that, would you ?

I tried to get to see it here in London toon, but it was only showing for a nano second before it was replaced by another rash of big budget flicks
  6. Aha! I'm having a lightbulb moment. I've heard of the spice sumach but never associated it with Rhus, even though it's got the same English name. I'm not sure I'm all that keen to try it
  7. Remind me to be very wary of an invite to dinner around at yours I've never heard that either.
  8. Have you got a bit of a rant you want to share with us, Robbo?
  9. Well said . I always thought getting married was about showing your love and devotion to your other half, not keeping the wedding planners in a luxury lifestyle. If you do get desperate and HAVE to get the trees so the ceremony can look like the Royal's recent one, try Barchams.
  10. I don't usually condone violence. I think I can make an exception in this case. The nasty little bullying sh.. well deserved it.
  11. rubra The crown's a little denser than what I would usually expect, or perhaps I'm use to half starved over stressed urban examples. The crown shape is spot on for an open grown red oak. coccinea tends to be more upright and less domed. nuttallii, borealis etc. are very, very similar and almost impossible to tell apart from a couple of pics. I'll stick with rubra coz it's the most likey.
  12. That's gorgeous I love the way that the "imperfections" in the wood have been incorporated and they make the bowl unique. Top work.
  13. The conspiracy theories abound There has been one confirmed nest found in Sheffield in 2010.
  14. I saw that on the lunchtime news. What a load of hysterics over a few caterpillars. Just wait until they get OPM up there
  15. As the AT calendar has quietly come back to life, is it ok to start populating it with events, training courses, days out etc? Not that anyone ever looks on there, but at least I know I'll be doing my civic duty n' all that
  16. God no! I know where my talents lay and running the country isn't one of my fortes. Or not that I know of, anyway But neither am I going to be one of the fickle voters and turn around and whinge about someone that I voted for, even if the choice was limited and they were the lesser of evils and not my ideal candidate.
  17. Ha, that was going to be my contribution . The original post makes an interesting point though. Moaning about "our" politions is easy. Getting off your backside and actually doing something to make a change requires a bit of effort on our part. Unfortunately, too many of us are content to do the former
  18. Mmmmmmmmm, tree porn. I'm looking forward to it Rob
  19. Are there any plans afoot for a trip over there for you, Monkey? All in the name of international bonding, of course, and nowt to do with a jolly

    Whats Happend

In this case, would the grafting have been done so that the trunk was gorgeous and glossy and the crown produced more ornamental flowers than the P serrula do you think? I know I'm wrong, but when I first saw the pic I thought of a graft chimera with one of the spp. breaking through.
  21. Nah, I'm just naturally good Tree ID is something I really enjoy and is what I used to be quite good at until my life dwindled to LA planes and cherries. It's certainly a heck ofa lot better than my fungal knowledge
  22. Hi Danu and welcome to AT. It's good to know that our posts are read, enjoyed and sometimes even understood by non arby people I think you are right to show concern for what is happening in your neighbourhood in general and to the imminent plans for your next door's tree in particular. BUT, have you actually spoken to your neighbour about this? There may be a whole lot going on that you are not aware of, for instance, tree related property subsidence or extensive decay has been found in the tree on inspection. Or they may simply have been given innapropriate advice about how to prune their tree. My point is that until you know the full background details, you aren't really in a positon to complain. Yes the work spec' needs to be clarified as to the amounts to be removed, but that doesn't necessarily make it wrong.
  23. Solanum crispum, dunno what cv or what that is in English It's a member of the nightshade family, like potatos and tomatos.
