  1. It does get tedious when you get endless grief for being tree murderers from people who frequently have an ability to shout but no real knowledge of tree and property law. I think that's got to be better than no one giving a proverbial one about the trees in their neighbourhood, I suppose though? You should have given her the estate agent's number and let them have the arguement and sat back and enjoyed the show If there are no planning constraints (Con' areas, TPOs), you are not felling enough to warrant a felling licence and you have the legal owner's / agent's permission, then you were legally entitled to be doing what you were doing.
  2. WOW!!! That's a stunning set of pic's of some amazing trees
  3. I'm trying desperately, and somewhat unsuccessfully, to curb my book buying habit. I think this one is going to sneak through Just one more waffer theen book to add to the collection - even if the philistines may have omitted your tree
  4. Another newly published shiny book to add to the ever growing coffee table collection Champion Trees of Britain & Ireland: The Tree Register Handbook Trees - botanical books Kew It looks like it could be the inspiration for a few trips out this summer.
  5. The longest commute I've ever had was 2 and a 1/2 hours journey each way on public transport . The pay was lousy as well, but to me, it was worth it as I loved the work. Sometimes, the job satisfaction is worth the long slog and the poverty. Having said that, I think I'm glad it was only a 3 month contract or I may have gone slightly mental with exhaustion!
  6. That's lovely Katsuras are really pretty little trees or multi stems and I'm surprised to found a large enough piece to mill.
  7. I'm reading John Irvine's latest and that's set in logging country, covering a time period covering manual forestry all the way through to mechanisation. Seeing those pic's makes it a lot more graphic
  8. I'm glad to see the fame hasn't turned you head and you still have time to talk to us
  9. So we're in agreement then - roots will only follow and exploit a source of water and nutrients
  10. Forget drains, manholes, soils etc, that tree's going to get seriously massive and is not suitable long term for the location. Replace it now with something more suitable or get used to not being able to see out of your windows and permanently clogged gutters. If you're going to do the work yourself, have a quick check with your Tree Officer that there aren't any planning contraints, or it could end up a very expensive bit of gardening.
  11. Er, that IS what Riggerbear said. If there is a source of moisture and nutrients, like from a crack in the pipes, then the roots will follow it and take advantage of it. They may also use the condensation formed around old metal pipes, but they're not going to do a smash n' grab and break into your sewers.
  12. I can't quite get my head around the size of some of those trees!!! And that they were cut by hand tools as well

    tree monkey?

Sorry to sound a bit pedantic, but that makes it sound as though trees are problematic and has quite negative connotations. Think about any of you lacal tradesmen that you would use: would you choose one with a straightforward, does what it says on the tin, professional name or a gimicky jocular one? I know which I would go for, and more importanly, most of you potential customers would as well.
  14. I found this while perusing Arboricultural Job vacancy offered. Climber West London Area, Climber. It's not the usual kind of job I'd give the heads up on, but I've given them a fair bit of work in the past (in a previous TO capacity) and I know that their standard of work is good and Dan's a really nice bloke
  15. All those years I have been wondering what's missing from my life. And now I know - arb knickers
  16. Magic beans??? If I knew the answer to that question (other than selling drugs), I would be doing it. Please feel free to experiment with your own two grand and let us know the results

    tree monkey?

DON'T DO IT!!! It may briefly give people a laugh, but then they will promptly go with the more professional sounding "... tree care" or "... arb' services" company
  18. Have you sat down and gone through Yell.com and contacted EVERY tree surgeon within an hours travel. Although you may want the climbing experience, you should be prepared to start as a groundie if necessary and work your way up, gaining a lot of valuable experience on the way. Also, have you thought about going down the BTCV route? You'll get plenty of chainsaw and conservation experience, learn a lot of new skills and gain a wider knowledge of the natural world than you would get working purely in arb'. I'm not sure if that will give you the climbing mentoring that you seem to be specifically after though.
  19. I missed what was going on on the ground as I was flying through it instead. More than usual vommy bags were used on that flight! It was very odd coming back a couple of weeks later to a landscape that had dramatically altered. Not that I was hugely interested in trees in my tender school years
  20. Hi miker, do you have a contract with this bloke?
  21. Ouch. That's a nasty paper cut Those silky's are nasty little things. The only scars I have from doing tree work are from minor brushes with hand saws. Soooo much blood some such relatively small cuts.
  22. It's a LIE!!! Damn you, man!!!
