I just started another thrad on this for the same rerason. I was speaking to keeley at treelife today and she says some are doing it still. level 3 now though I think after re-structuring or something. Need to check out the info she sent, and Myerscough by the looks of it!

I pretty much agree Matty. For years I refused to buy husky after blowing them up and just feeling they were poorly made, and until a couple of years back still felt that. However I now feel that stihl have been resting on their laurels.....the machines feel more cheaply made, my 200 has had endless problems, the ms362 I replaced an ms361 with feels cheap, and my husky 390xp is just a much better made machine. On top of that I have heard from 2 seperate dealers that stihl basically said 'if it says stihl on it they'll keep buying it'.......

That is a stunning piece of timber Matty. Sand the hell out of it with finer and finer paper, then use a clear satin varnish, several layers, letting each layer dry completely and using very fine wire wool on it between coats. It will keep its colour, but it will be varnished, which i am not personally a fan of.

After about 14 years of tree related work, and about 3 years on Arbtalk learning that there is more to this industry than just a load of NPTC quals and some work gained knowledge, I want to 'get some letters after my name' as it were.....I want to feel that what I know is reflected by a formal qualification basically. My starting point after a couple of days in front of the PC and several calls to other arbs was the FRS cert arb, leading to ND Arb at a later date. However it appears that this is not available as a correspondence course. Family and career mean that I cannot do a full time in-house course at college. Any suggestions? I have been looking at ISA cert arb. What other suggestions can I get off those of you in the know. Ta.

Beech every time over ash. Ok ash burns green....big deal. It burns fast when dry. Beech gives out shed loads of heat when dry and doesnt burn too fast. Almost the best logs you can get IMO.

I think you are missing the point 656solo. There are alot of arb firms who need drivers with HGV, yet are being approached by youngsters who cant even tow over 750kg. The points being made are that your HGV ability is a BONUS to a firm with big kit, NOT that you should JUST be a driver. Like Mark says- drive the HGV machine and all day long do your arb work. The HGV could be carrying waste away from site, or have a big machine that needs transporting to site, etc etc. -

The dryer they are the less calorific value in them will be used to drive out moisture so will effectively give out more heat, yes. How noticeable the difference will be between logs at 20% and 25% M.C. is another matter.

Kilning should result in no more than 12% as far as i know, so that is nonsense.

No. Although i have and use spikes, I know a VERY competent lead climber of 25+ years experience who wont touch them!

Not being funny but how bad is the nissan- They arent the best pullers anyway depending on what engine they have. Is it a turbo engine or standard, and what are you trying to pull?
