  1. did he have any tickest ??
  2. nope he should buy my 7.5 inch chipper
  3. do you have anything factual to base your statement on ???? i have a tw190 and other than the usual stuff that is expaected on a chiper i have not had any trouble with it , it recently had its 500 hour service and all that was required was new bottom feed roler bushes which after 500 hrs of use is expectable !!! i am now selling it as i am changing the way that we work . what is it that you use for a chiper ??
  4. so where is the picture of his boss showing him how its done ?? lol where is the H&S lmao if you need another manual spliter i an sure i can help you out !!!!
  5. mate i would make the to suit your needs and your vehicle
  6. i use many many different cominations of Gob cut , back cut , eather to leave one side of the hinge thicker than the other etc etc , i have always felt that if a am not happy felling a tree whether it is 35 feet tall of 80 feet tall i will not fell it , but as i gained more experiance felling trees i began to feel more comfortable and able to fell more awkward trees . but never the less trying to fell a tree right beside an ABC cable that is in fact not classed as insulated and also within the live zone of the cable i would have either got the utility company to make the line dead or got the utility company in to take the down to beneath the wires .
  7. that sounds to me like the crank seals have had it mate but it could also be the carb thats gone wrong , my advice would be to get the maze and model number of the carb off of it and give stihl tec services a call they will tell you weather its the carb or not . on the carb it should say either warbro or zamma with there model no becide it . roughly how old is the saw and what sort of hours has it done . also you could give the saw a reall good clean out and then take the exaust off and gently pull the saw over whilst watching the piston , this should indicate wether the the saw has picked up and scored the piston thus causing it to lose power . if you need any help doind any of the above give me a shout and i will talk you through it . good luck
  8. the strange thin is im down in cornwall and cant seem to find any more staf lol
  9. maybe the vacancy shout state that a pre 97 license or persons with C1 would be preferable then . i would hate to see people put off just because they think that they would not be considdered because they can not tow . hope all goes well in recruting new staff or even some staff that have been previously employed by Bartlets
  10. this looks a great vacancy for the older members of the industry but once again it seems that any decent climber/ground worker need not apply if they do not have a pre 97 driving license or has been able to get C1 !!!!!!!!!!
  11. its really good to hear that there are still a few students leaving college with the right ideas and that are not full of bravardo !!! i hope all goes well working for your self . Jack Kenyon taught me when i was at merrist wood and to be honest i fell very fortunate to have been taught by a guy with as knuch knowledge and pasion for the job .
  12. but the origional question was - I've got a job coming up to remove some hawthorn trees for a client who's building a house, what would be a good species to replant to create some privacy, not be high maintenance and not have prolific roots that cause problems later on??? some will be planted about 8ft from where the house will be built, he is putting up a 6ft fence all the way along too, so it doesn't have to be trees that go in, just something that will create some added privacy??? so we have given some species that may be suitable , it is up to him to see what is suitable with respect to the questions that you have raised!!!!!
  13. i did the training for my level 1 IRATA but never took it any further as i was told that i had to do a certain amount of hours in any one period of time to keep it all in date . i now wish i had gone and worked through the levels
  14. so whats the price justin ?? im really interested in a set:wink:
  15. i have several husky 357 px's and for day to day ground work they are great they have loads of power and i find them really user friendly , i also have a stihl 361 which is a truly awsome saw and great for use in a tree !! but if you are looking for a smallish ground say then i personally would go for the husky 357 xp
  16. yes and basic is the key word , the ticket allows you to prove your BASIC understanding , it does not prove anything more !! as for the shooting bit dean i never knew that
  17. i thought that the job oppertunity was posted on here so that it gave a chance for anyone currently out of work or finding it tough getting another job after being laid off a chance to give something slightly different ago but by still keeping involved in the industry . however i do not think that the thread was posted on here for all of us to give it the seal of approval of kiss of death . the job is what it is and as andy said there are far more benefits to doing something like this than we think . and again as andy said - it is no wonder some colleges do not like arbtalk . im not saying that we should all agree to everything said . i can assure you that the advertised job will be filled and there will be many applicants for the job . as for pay i really think some people need to realise that money is not everything and if money is the be all and end all to working in this industry then maybe they should look for a job doing something different . i work for my self and really enjoy doing what i do !! i look forward to getting up each day and going to work because i am happy doing what i do , there are days as most of you that are self employed wil know all so well when you dont actually earn a penny but im still happy !! yes more money would be nice but i dont know anyone that would turn down more money no matter how much they are paid . any way rant over lol
  18. the point it that not every college is the same , Myercough and merristwood does have a good reputation and a good sylabus that they teach , colege is not for everyone , i did th ten wek course t merrist wood for exactly that reason , alot of the problem is thta colleges are taking on more and more studnets each year to make running courses in arboriculture financially worth while , when i went to merrist wood this was just about to start hapening because they went from basicly being a private college that was on the verge of going under to being a part of guildford college that has now wattered down what they teach . the bottom line is if you dont feel your learning anything at college then move , dont wait till its to late in the second year to move .
  19. tell you what try and interview two decent guys as im in need of one too i do agree that many coleges are taking simply working on quantity and not quality of students , when i went to merrist wood i had an interview to make sure i fitted the criteria however is seemed that the other guys on my course did not ,i was the youngest ther with the most experiance!! you are right that most lads fresh out of college are full of it , 2 weeks ago i had a guy down that had just left college and was one of the best in his year !!! he was totally useless and took just over 2 hours to do what i would do in 15 mins, he had more anchor point than the QE2 and then had the cheek when he got down from the tree to swan off for junch and watch me clear up . hence he did not get the job and left me thinking that if he was one of the best in his college what would one of the worst do ???? i really want to set a scheem up where i tske a guy on for a year to gain experiance and then send him away for 6 -12 months to somewhere like merrist wood where i can still monitor his progress and once again sorry for my previous rant it really was not aimed at you in specific
  20. well said tell me how do you get the experiance as a climber if you dont get up there and do it ?, 38 and 39 means you can climb a tree and use a chainsaw in a tree ie cutting branches etc to do the training for 40 and 41 you need to have a fair bit of experiance working in a tree to be able to complete the training and test .
  21. how about guy fresh out of college is climbing and trying to rush the job because the boss said that collgeg is a load of crap and the job does not take as long as it takes so he has to hurry up . so he does resulting in his injury , groun staff get injured or worse still he dies !!!!! yes the list is endles if the your new member of staff does not have the relevant ticket for that certain job then he should not be doing it . it is up to either hi mor you or both of you to get him qualified to do so .not keep preatching on about how colleges dont want to teach it
  22. im sorry but i have been reading many of these posts and asking my self how in touch some people are !!! i went to merrist wood after 3 years in the industry getting the experiance to make the most out of going to college , i went there with sc 30,31,31b, 38 ,39 , ual , wood chipper and mewp . i went there to gain skills that sadly training out in the industry could not offer nor could it offer the time to keep parctising till i got it right and further more if you got it wrong there was nothing underneath to hurt !!. you may have had 3 bad climbers from merrist wood but i know of alot that are now leaders in the industry !!!! as for having every qualification when they leave then the fees would double , the length of the course would double and to be fair how many climbers do you know that need pa units ?? . as for the job taking as long as it takes to get the job done safely being a load of crap (your words not mine) How the f**k do you expect someone to get any experiance and work efficiently and safely if they are expected to work at industry pace ?? it really does F**K me right of that there is all this bravado within the industry its crap like this that leads young guys to try and race which causes accidents which in turn puts the insurance premiums up !!!!! in one sentence your shouting about qualifications and the next your more or less stating that these guys need to come strate out of college with the level of experiance that a guy has got form 2-3 years in the industry and work at the same pace !!! it aint going to happen and if this is the way in which your deciding who is and who is not any good then i really think you need to have a re-think on your approach to taking guys on , more to the point im sure if some one such as Jack Kenyon were to see you as an arborist he would probably have a list of faults with you , just the same as he would me . im not trying to get personal but take a look back to when you started out . you knew just as little as any of the rest of us but as we progress we learn more and improve on productivity . finally as for the remark that the college seems to fill their heads full of **** i think that its more a case that once again bravardo seems to be the way to impress in this trade and thats what they try to do . i personally have tried my best not to behave like that as i feel that it will get you no where . the guys i have taken on fresh out of college have what i feel is required to start work in the trade and now it is up to them and the employer to improve there skills base and qualifications such as cs40,41 , chipper , mewp , ua units etc etc . rant over:laugh1:
  23. firstly the council do have the responsibility to cut the tree back but the complication comes when the trees may be owned by cornwall council or the local parish council so firstly i would contact the parish council to see if the bridle path belongs to them failing that contact cornwall council , should that fail then legally you can cut back anything overhanging your clients property back to the legal boundary but should this create an imballence and any of the trees fall over etc etc then i can promise you the council that owns them will come looking for you . as far as funding and grants go i would guess that unless you were restoring the bridal path then there would not be alot of funding out there for you if any at all !!!!! i personally would give either olly or ian a call in the forresters department they will be more than happy to help as they oversee all of the countys tree stock
  24. hmmm not sure if i will go or not , it seems to be geared towards the forestry side of things more . anyone been to it before ??
