  1. its really good to hear that there are still a few students leaving college with the right ideas and that are not full of bravardo !!! i hope all goes well working for your self . Jack Kenyon taught me when i was at merrist wood and to be honest i fell very fortunate to have been taught by a guy with as knuch knowledge and pasion for the job .
  2. but the origional question was - I've got a job coming up to remove some hawthorn trees for a client who's building a house, what would be a good species to replant to create some privacy, not be high maintenance and not have prolific roots that cause problems later on??? some will be planted about 8ft from where the house will be built, he is putting up a 6ft fence all the way along too, so it doesn't have to be trees that go in, just something that will create some added privacy??? so we have given some species that may be suitable , it is up to him to see what is suitable with respect to the questions that you have raised!!!!!
  3. i did the training for my level 1 IRATA but never took it any further as i was told that i had to do a certain amount of hours in any one period of time to keep it all in date . i now wish i had gone and worked through the levels
  4. so whats the price justin ?? im really interested in a set:wink:
  5. i have several husky 357 px's and for day to day ground work they are great they have loads of power and i find them really user friendly , i also have a stihl 361 which is a truly awsome saw and great for use in a tree !! but if you are looking for a smallish ground say then i personally would go for the husky 357 xp
  6. yes and basic is the key word , the ticket allows you to prove your BASIC understanding , it does not prove anything more !! as for the shooting bit dean i never knew that
  7. i thought that the job oppertunity was posted on here so that it gave a chance for anyone currently out of work or finding it tough getting another job after being laid off a chance to give something slightly different ago but by still keeping involved in the industry . however i do not think that the thread was posted on here for all of us to give it the seal of approval of kiss of death . the job is what it is and as andy said there are far more benefits to doing something like this than we think . and again as andy said - it is no wonder some colleges do not like arbtalk . im not saying that we should all agree to everything said . i can assure you that the advertised job will be filled and there will be many applicants for the job . as for pay i really think some people need to realise that money is not everything and if money is the be all and end all to working in this industry then maybe they should look for a job doing something different . i work for my self and really enjoy doing what i do !! i look forward to getting up each day and going to work because i am happy doing what i do , there are days as most of you that are self employed wil know all so well when you dont actually earn a penny but im still happy !! yes more money would be nice but i dont know anyone that would turn down more money no matter how much they are paid . any way rant over lol
  8. the point it that not every college is the same , Myercough and merristwood does have a good reputation and a good sylabus that they teach , colege is not for everyone , i did th ten wek course t merrist wood for exactly that reason , alot of the problem is thta colleges are taking on more and more studnets each year to make running courses in arboriculture financially worth while , when i went to merrist wood this was just about to start hapening because they went from basicly being a private college that was on the verge of going under to being a part of guildford college that has now wattered down what they teach . the bottom line is if you dont feel your learning anything at college then move , dont wait till its to late in the second year to move .
  9. tell you what try and interview two decent guys as im in need of one too i do agree that many coleges are taking simply working on quantity and not quality of students , when i went to merrist wood i had an interview to make sure i fitted the criteria however is seemed that the other guys on my course did not ,i was the youngest ther with the most experiance!! you are right that most lads fresh out of college are full of it , 2 weeks ago i had a guy down that had just left college and was one of the best in his year !!! he was totally useless and took just over 2 hours to do what i would do in 15 mins, he had more anchor point than the QE2 and then had the cheek when he got down from the tree to swan off for junch and watch me clear up . hence he did not get the job and left me thinking that if he was one of the best in his college what would one of the worst do ???? i really want to set a scheem up where i tske a guy on for a year to gain experiance and then send him away for 6 -12 months to somewhere like merrist wood where i can still monitor his progress and once again sorry for my previous rant it really was not aimed at you in specific
  10. well said tell me how do you get the experiance as a climber if you dont get up there and do it ?, 38 and 39 means you can climb a tree and use a chainsaw in a tree ie cutting branches etc to do the training for 40 and 41 you need to have a fair bit of experiance working in a tree to be able to complete the training and test .
  11. how about guy fresh out of college is climbing and trying to rush the job because the boss said that collgeg is a load of crap and the job does not take as long as it takes so he has to hurry up . so he does resulting in his injury , groun staff get injured or worse still he dies !!!!! yes the list is endles if the your new member of staff does not have the relevant ticket for that certain job then he should not be doing it . it is up to either hi mor you or both of you to get him qualified to do so .not keep preatching on about how colleges dont want to teach it
  12. im sorry but i have been reading many of these posts and asking my self how in touch some people are !!! i went to merrist wood after 3 years in the industry getting the experiance to make the most out of going to college , i went there with sc 30,31,31b, 38 ,39 , ual , wood chipper and mewp . i went there to gain skills that sadly training out in the industry could not offer nor could it offer the time to keep parctising till i got it right and further more if you got it wrong there was nothing underneath to hurt !!. you may have had 3 bad climbers from merrist wood but i know of alot that are now leaders in the industry !!!! as for having every qualification when they leave then the fees would double , the length of the course would double and to be fair how many climbers do you know that need pa units ?? . as for the job taking as long as it takes to get the job done safely being a load of crap (your words not mine) How the f**k do you expect someone to get any experiance and work efficiently and safely if they are expected to work at industry pace ?? it really does F**K me right of that there is all this bravado within the industry its crap like this that leads young guys to try and race which causes accidents which in turn puts the insurance premiums up !!!!! in one sentence your shouting about qualifications and the next your more or less stating that these guys need to come strate out of college with the level of experiance that a guy has got form 2-3 years in the industry and work at the same pace !!! it aint going to happen and if this is the way in which your deciding who is and who is not any good then i really think you need to have a re-think on your approach to taking guys on , more to the point im sure if some one such as Jack Kenyon were to see you as an arborist he would probably have a list of faults with you , just the same as he would me . im not trying to get personal but take a look back to when you started out . you knew just as little as any of the rest of us but as we progress we learn more and improve on productivity . finally as for the remark that the college seems to fill their heads full of **** i think that its more a case that once again bravardo seems to be the way to impress in this trade and thats what they try to do . i personally have tried my best not to behave like that as i feel that it will get you no where . the guys i have taken on fresh out of college have what i feel is required to start work in the trade and now it is up to them and the employer to improve there skills base and qualifications such as cs40,41 , chipper , mewp , ua units etc etc . rant over:laugh1:
  13. firstly the council do have the responsibility to cut the tree back but the complication comes when the trees may be owned by cornwall council or the local parish council so firstly i would contact the parish council to see if the bridle path belongs to them failing that contact cornwall council , should that fail then legally you can cut back anything overhanging your clients property back to the legal boundary but should this create an imballence and any of the trees fall over etc etc then i can promise you the council that owns them will come looking for you . as far as funding and grants go i would guess that unless you were restoring the bridal path then there would not be alot of funding out there for you if any at all !!!!! i personally would give either olly or ian a call in the forresters department they will be more than happy to help as they oversee all of the countys tree stock
  14. hmmm not sure if i will go or not , it seems to be geared towards the forestry side of things more . anyone been to it before ??
  15. is that the same as the southwest woodlands show ??? as i have been trying to find out when it is . Usually its during september but not sure when .
  16. have you thought about using hazel ?? not something many would reomend but i have used it and it works a treat with various methods for management . either hadge laying or standard hedge cutting , bnut just a thught oh and its a bit different to what most people are going for !!!
  17. do you have a fax ??? if so i can send you a parts diagram , if not im happy to talk you through putting it back together , i have had to do a few of them now lol
  18. i went to merrist wood for ten weeks and learnt a massive amount more in ten weeks than i had in the 3 years that i had already been working in the trade . Not only did i learn alot of newer practical techniques but i gained a wealth of knowledge in the theory side of the job too . i feel that the course was well worth it . however i have since worked with a couple guys that have recently done the ten week course at Merrist Wood and it seems that the standards have dropped dramaticly . i do feel that an aprenticeship is the better route to go down if you have someone as a mentor that has the kind of experiance and knowlege of someone like bob skyhuc , but no god to if you end up working with a small one man band that will not let you progress . p.s sorry about the gramer and spelling - something i did not learn at college lol
  19. i have had 6 ms200t's and every one of them has had to have a new carb , stihl have been less than helpfull throughout this and after the third carb i called stihl technicle and asked what the problem so they basicly blamed the manufacturer of the carbs and told me what the model number of the carbs was that have caused the problem, great i said so later that evening a had a look at two other saws , one was nearly new (about2 months old) and the other was brand new and dontyou know they have the same faulty carb fitted !!. next day im back on the phone to stihl asking why both my new saws still have that carb ???? i did not get an answer from them i gave them the serial numbers of the saw's and asked the guy too look into it . About a week later i got a call from him saying that he still does not know wh this happened etc etc so i asked him for 2 replacment carbs as i did not want to wait for them to go wron one day when out on site because like he said they all seem to go wron at around the same amount of hours use !!! The answer i got from him was NO stihl does not and will not do that , you will just have to wait till they go wrong but if they are older then a year (which by the ammount of hours it takes for them to start going wrong) i will have to pay as the waranty will have expired !!!! Im now really hoping that Husky bring out a serious contender to the MS200T and soon !!!!! if it were to be as good as the ms200t but without all the breakdowns then i would be quickly moving over to them !!
  20. im using a stein plasma for climbing fitted with peltor defenders and tinted visor and whne im on the ground or its raining a use my petzel with peltor defenders and mesh visor . if a had to chose one then i would chose the stein every time
  21. good point , maybe you could change your company name to - top it lop it and hop it
  22. Arbex arboricultural contractors and consutants or Arbex tree specialists
  23. i think they are getting the answers from the fat bloke down the pub lol , or is it based on what the average tree surgeon nees to earn to be able to afford to use this service
  24. i know a chap that bought a couple tct chains and he was saying that they are great while your cutting clean timber but as soon as you start to cut and contaminated timber they dull just like a normal chain but a bit slower. I think they are usefull on jobs where like skyhuc said you have been winching or your working on a building site etc but i certainly would not use them that ogten at all , the cost of a tct chain out weighs the time it would take me to sharpen a normall chain - also something you could not do with a tct chain it needs to be sharpened by a specialist
  25. i was looking at an advert in my local yellow pages so the lady came round spouted on about how many times the book is used to find tree work per day ??? how do they know that ??? then she proceded to tell me that the advertising i currently had was of poor quality and my busines cards did not sell my company well ??WTF?? in the end with all the art work (if you can call it that) the advert and a monitored phone number i was going to hand her over £1200 !!!! not likely . i was speaking to dangerous brian and he took out an add with them and in 2 months and£700 later he has had one crap job come from it . As for Yel.com i had the whole irish pixi call me tyr to sell me some web advertising for another daft ammount of money and asked could i handly all the work that i will be geting from them ???? but when i asked for proof to his aclimed figures he was not too forthcoming !! so he was told where to go ! but still for about 3 weeks he felt he should keep calling me trying to prove that i was wrong and i needed his help !!!! oh and as for the thompson lacall i really would not waste your time with them !! i have advertised with them for 2 years now and it really has not been worth it what so ever . especially when they printed my advert this year with the wrong phone number on it and added crap images to the advert that i told them i did not want - there excuse was well im really sorry mr Mathews but we did send out a proof to you and we are sorry you didnt get it but that is not our fault its yours !!!! all in all a think the best advertising is like others on here have said and thats to signwright your trusk really well , get your work clothes printed and use local papers etc failing that 2K would buy you your own advertising board/trailer !!!!!
