  1. very true , the less we do to trees the better , you cant half thin a tree but you can thin one side you cant half crown lift a tree but you can crown lift the side of the tree over the path way - ie half doing something is not finnishing it if you see what i mean , but from my point of view simply cutting the top out of a tree does not constitute a reduction nor does leaving a flat top meet BS3998 standards!
  2. yeah i did in a round about way lol , the money i saved him on not having the trees taken down £1570 nearly paid for half of the bridge . im sure you must have done something similar before
  3. well said . looks like the snap hook my be getting a second chance lol , i was happy using it untill i was told by a loler inspector that it was not fit for purpose to be used on my adjustable strop !!!! but thanks for correcting him chaps
  4. but the point is that this guy is subbing to another company so i would expect them to know a good job from a bad job and what is right and wrong , i agree that the general public assume that we are the one with knowledge but not evy tree surgeon (using the term tree surgeon loosely) knows much about trees other than that you can make money from cutting them and making nice loking lollypop type shapes with them the point i was making in my origional post was that this guy is working for another company and does not feel the work that they are asking him to do is acceptable !!!
  5. it was that bad down here in cornwall that while driving down the road i saw two fishes, even they said sod this !!!
  6. if i do have to barce a tree a will always try to prune the tree or failing that the effected limb/scaffold , that way thw brace does its job and weight reduction will hopefully aid the tree some more , but there is a fine line betwene retaining a tree that with the above work will be structurally sound for the next 5-10 years and leaving a liability !!! as for q.t.r.a i am really interested in finding out more about it and going on a course to be able to use q.t.r.a but sadly down in cornwall there is no training that i know of
  7. i had to fight to get two Quercus Cerris stopped from felling , the land owner wante two perfectly healthy trees felled so that he did not have to put in an abr approved bridge over the tree roots (BS5837) . it took a week of constant calls to the LA that is normally exeptionally strict about the felling of any tree wether it is ded ,dying ,dangerous or not . but on this occasion they felt that 50-60 homes and a view of the upper cannopy's was not a good enough reason to stop the felling of the two mature oak trees . not nocking you mate but im sure you know all to well how varied and inconsistant plaaning departmentds can be . Also would it not be considdered that if the tree needs a brace due to its current condition then somethig like a QTRA assessment would put this at more than 1 in 20 thousand risk of failure ??? i personally try to limmit the ammount of bracing i do due to the fact that by identifying that a tree needs bracing is also admitting that the tree is structurally un-sound . but please correct me if you feel im wrong
  8. the trouble it that to most LA's a tree is a tree no matter its condition , location, targets etc etc and further to this they get the generall public well some of the tree hugging fraturnity pressuring them that every tree no matter what its condition is precious and must be saved at all costs im really not having a dig at the TO's amongst us purely the system in which they have to work
  9. if the tree has a moderate to low amenety value to 10 or so houses why has the tree been protected ?? surely the tree would/is exempt due to its mechanicle/structural weeknesses ?? i guess its hard to speculate or come to a conclusion without seeing the tree and its location !!! company outing anyone lol
  10. thanks guys that saves me spending 1500 on a shipping container , i think i will try to buid a pole shelter type thing lol
  11. so will you be reducing the prescribed limb to be braced as well by 20-25% ?? i think i thats probablly the route i would go down but without seeing where proposed development will be i can only speculate ! whats the condition throughout the rest of the tree bob ??
  12. i was thinking about looging up al timber as it comes in and storing it in a shipping container , has anyone tried this
  13. what are the targets bob ??? what type of bracing hes been specified ??
  14. s**t brians here best stop talking about him lol !! anyone wanna know anything about electro arb ask brian !!!! he did his Western Power Distribution intro today !!!!!!
  15. looks good , i have recently stopped using my Edelrid snap hook on the advice of a fellow arb talker has he says its not fit for purpose to have one on my adgujustable strop , but looking at the isc snap i think i will have to give it a go , would be rude not too lol anyone use a snap hook on there adjustable strop ?? and if so would you rely on it as your only anchor point when throwing your rope further up the tree ?? sorry to sound daft but after being told my snap hook would fil a loler test im just a little bit aprehensive !!!!
  16. cheers chaps , i wont be telling dangerous brian that or he will be logging everything into 8 inch rings on site ha ha . secondly do any of you use popular for fire wood ?? i have been offered about 5 tons for free but tbh i really cant see it being worth burning or waiting 12 months for it to dry out but once again this is only my oppinion . what do you guys think ????
  17. right chaps i have been hearing some conflicting answers to a question a have asked a couple fire wood guys - does timber dry faster as rings or in lengths ?? some say lengths some say rings ???
  18. great vid andy and some nice work carried out by the climber !!
  19. sorry to derail the thred slightly but talking bout led lights does anyone have led orange flashing lights on there chippers ??
  20. well done mate , glad to hear you did well !!!
  21. TBH i would not considder reducing a tree by anywhere near 50% to start off with unless there was a mojor issue and if it was that serious i would be cautious about leaving the tree standing . Secondly if your working for a company that feel half finnished reductions or even maybe half thinned or half crown lifting trees is acceptable i would question subbing to them ! verry few people remember decent tree surgeons carrying out work to a high standard but lots of people remember a p**s poor quality or half finnished job by a company that wanna make money at any cost, we are meant to be tree care experts not oppertunist tree cutters . not having a go at you in any way mate as i had a similar decision to make a few months ago . but i can also see that at the moment jobs are hard to come by so can imagine its a tough call
  22. That guy sounds like a totall c**k , i had a customer tried that with me about 18 months -2 years ago , he was trying the whole you turned up late -8.30 , you had more than just a lunch break etc etc , he tried to justify not paying the 850 bill but insted he was going to pay me 600 . i simply explained that if he wished to do that it was fine but it did not cover the cost of taking away the wood chip and timber there fore i will be bringing it all back and tipping it in either his front garden or his drive !!! would you believe he decided he wanted to pay the full ammount !!!
  23. personaly i would not put a 30 inch bar on a 441 , it will be slow cutting and that in some cases is really not what you want when it really matters , i would be cautious about running a 30 inch bar on a 460 , bite the bulle and get a 660 if you aint already got one mate, i run a 30 inch bar on my 880 as my small bar , it means it has pleanty of power and your nof floggin the saw to death
  24. think you should stick with the wall nut mate , let me know where you can get it from , i might just get one for my ldv , seems it would really fit in with brians pipe and smoking jacket
  25. yep thats b drians crabstar in the back ground , also sporting a set of custom ply greedy boards lmao
