    Conifer logs

Give them a go - see how you get on.

    Conifer logs

Is there enough to make a day's hire of a small splitter feasible? If the stuff's already in log length rings I think you'll manage by hand actually except for the gnarly bits and they're chainsaw fodder. I have a heap - probably 10 pickups or more - of Western Red Cedar dumped in the garden. Despite a previous claim on here that I wouldn't be touching them I'm starting to clear them and I've been breaking rings OK with a splitting axe. There was some spruce with it too that I've kept; that split fine too. I reckon the lot's been down 4 or 5 years.
  3. Pic 2 is Mrs Sparrow and she's a looker too. I would dearly love to have house sparrows; their noise is permanently embedded in my mind as part of growing up in Rotherfield. They're 200 yards from here, just up the lane, but don't seem to get down it this far. I suspect the greenery here isn't dense enough for them.
  4. That's a very good point thus far overlooked. I spent well into four figures over about five years seeking a mattress that worked 😟 In the end I need have only spent £299 cos Emma's the babe for me.
  5. Depends how much you want to spend. At one end of the spectrum there are lorry sides as said. A cheap alternative that won't take much physical abuse is scaffold sheeting Scaffold Sheet - Clear Reinforced 2M & 3M Wide WWW.EBAY.CO.UK Scaffold Sheet. - in 2M or & 3M Wide. 2M or 3M Widths. Length can be selected using drop down box above. Clear...
  6. The first greenfinch I've seen in a long time; I think they got clobbered by trichomonosis didn't they?
  7. I find Coal Tits the least brave of the lot! They wait until there are no other birds about before coming to a feeder. If something appears they're off like a shot. A pair of Goldfinches have arrived in the last few days and seem to spend a good couple of hours a day on the sunflower hearts; we bought them for the first time a fortnight ago - what a hit with the birdies. You're right Stubby, they love them and niger seed too. At the old place siskin used to go for that but I've only seen one female here so far.
  8. Lol. What a tit! Er - I meant the George Floyd thing 😆
  9. The officer had 26 years service. A guy clambering into his own car in front of three cops can hardly be stressful. My impression is that it's a horrible mistake, handgun being mistaken for taser. How big a mistake - in terms of the error itself, not the consequences - and how justifiable or not is something we won't know for a long time. Happening so near the George Floyd shooting and so soon afterwards - well you couldn't make that up.
  10. Resin tables... yeah, they're alright 😅 I'm good thanks. New house, new garden - very busy with that. Not doing much of this tree work at the mo.
  11. Offer it to a carver?
  12. As others have said stretch at every opportunity. All the time your upper body is upright - i.e. sitting or standing there's pressure on that bulging disc. Stretching will ease the pressure. It doesn't have to be anything fancy; I just touch my hands to the ground in front of my feet and slowly straighten my legs; makes a big difference. Then see a chiro/osteo and if the first one doesn't help go to a different one as not all practitioners suit all patients and vice versa.
  13. Doesn't look like it's in deep shade to me and the OP said it was bent when he bought the tree. I'm with options A or B; leave it alone or take out the tip of the leader, then leave it alone.
  14. Cancel my suggestion of a 70cc saw and 25" bar; you need a 880 and 5' bar 😆
  15. Such an obvious thing but I totally overlooked it 🙄 Genius mate!
  16. So when you've filled your dumpy bags with sawdust for sale what do you do with the wood?!
  17. Could you lend a saw to someone competent who doesn't work with you to see if they get the same happening? It could eliminate one more factor.
  18. What you're missing - in a polite way! - is ease and speed of cutting as Woodworks says. Cutting from one side only will save you time and hassle. You're a busy man who achieves a lot on his own 🙌 so time is money. If you're cutting rings that large regularly then a ~70cc saw running a 25" bar would be a revelation to you. Yes it's a big step up but you'd still have your 261 for smaller stuff. You seem to know tree guys; go and have a play with some of their saws. No criticism here, I'm just trying to help!
  19. Glyphosate is absorbed through the foliage isn't it so the odd accidental dab on a stem should be ok I'd say. Nature abhors bare ground; if you successfully kill off the ground elder she'll replace it with another coloniser - ivy perhaps or lesser celandine. Be careful what you wish for!
  20. Where are the jobs?!
  21. Competitive grieving... haven't heard that one before; like it - it's spot on. It's like 'who can be offended most easily?'
  22. Totally agree re the over-the-top reaction. My wife and daughter met at RHS Hyde Hall in Essex today, were there an hour and a half before being thrown out (politely) as all RHS properties closed 'as a mark of respect'! They were the last in the queue in the cafe to be served; the folk behind them were told 'sorry, no food; we're closing'! I can understand closing the properties tomorrow - still over the top but I can sort of see it - but actually evicting paying visitors (refunded) and paid up members? Really? That's bonkers. It's not nicknamed the Rheumatics and Hernia Society for nothing!
  23. Our previous LA collected food waste, our new one doesn't but the quantity of food waste going in the bin for incineration is also minimal - meat-based plus avocados cos they don't rot! Everything else goes in the plastic bins up the garden. I'm waxing lyrical about plastics in teabags... I think my life has been less than useful! 😂
  24. Teabag plastic - the next scandal! Our LA distinguishes between landfill waste and household waste. Household waste - which is getting our emptied teabags - is incinerated for heat/power generation and I'm happy with that.
