  1. I have no qualms in using fresh chip out of the growing season. In the growing season I try to use older stuff but I have a suspicion that the nitrogen robbery thing is overstated, especially with established pants; the chip is in a thin layer and composts to a decent degree in a fairly short time but the plant roots are deep. If the prospect nitrogen robbery bothers you I guess you could add to the mulch with manure

  3. @Puzzle Monkey don't give up. My experience is that every user of the timber has a unique opinion on the stuff! Some want it dry, some want it green. Keep asking around. Most don't want rings with knots bigger than 12-14" as the majority of hobbyist lathes can't manage anything bigger.
  4. You're not kidding 😂 but I did enjoy watching the Pick-Up-Sticks!
  5. I think this goes some way to explaining the background today; the Royal/media relationship has changed. 'Don't complain, don't explain' doesn't work any more. Harry and Meghan: What's the media's 'invisible contract' with British royalty? WWW.BBC.CO.UK Prince Harry spoke of an "invisible contract" between his family and media - what does it involve? Obviously I'm a total muppet for even going near the Beeb but I enjoyed the article 🙄 I'm not defending the couple - keeping their mouths shut would have made for a more pleasant life - but it makes sense to see what they've done in a wider context

  7. Just looked it up 👍😂
  8. Without plugging the saw into the mains try pressing in the safety release button and squeezing the trigger as if you wanted to start the chain running: you should be able to move the chain - use the file on the back of a tooth. This works on my leccy Stihl and I can't see the controls being significantly different with a Makita.

What the heck is it doing attached to the vid?! It's not meant to be. Me - 0 Teknologee - too many to count
  10. @danthemanwhocan See what happens if you start someone's name with @ and select from the dropdown?!
  11. I don't think there's a treatment for it, especially in such an advanced state. But the tree doesn't become useless to nature because it has a fungal infection. The reduction I was referring to was purely to create physical safety in a slowly dying tree; what you leave will be invaluable to fungi and invertebrates and they are invaluable to larger creatures as food as well as being worthy of conservation just because.
  12. Heard of them; that's a good recommendation - thanks. I have a friend in Henfield for an obligatory cuppa (outside of course). Not such a journey really; ATS are still my arb suppliers. Cheers, Jon
  13. No 😁 I want the machine for my own place; have just moved house and need to clear a spot for a new shed
  14. Can anyone recommend please? Lewes/Uckfield/Heathfield area preferably. I only need a 13hp machine but I prefer them with sharpened teeth 🙂 Cheers, Jon

  16. Or reduced to a safe size and retained for habitat?
  17. And the site is the poorer for the absence of your wisdom Alec - come back! Jon
  18. I could get The Boss to try on her iPad later. I've used an Incognito window and blocked Arbtalk from knowing my location: a Tip Site search on the MK postcode produced no tip sites anywhere at all at all! And thanks for trying to help me; harder work than you thought eh?!
  19. Thanks for the tip; too technical for me I'm afraid - private window? Stop my browser knowing my location? Beyond my 'skills' I'm afraid 🥴
  20. What am I doing wrong?
  21. I did out of interest and the only tip sites showing at all are the ones near me in East Sussex. Problem @Steve Bullman ?
  22. I don't think pear either; the little plates of bark aren't rectangular enough. But we know the wood's heavy and hard; looking at the bark too I'd say hawthorn's a good shout
  23. Good on your dad; fear of officialdom is nearly as powerful as its actual powers. He was obviously not a man to be pushed about!
  24. The OP last visited Arbtalk in March 2018. Probs better off using the e-mail address
  25. Not everyone's opinion. I have some lumps felled 9 months ago and was advised by a trusted turner to keep it under a lid but ventilated for a year. A nationally well known turner who specialises in MP likes big pieces stood with the endgrain on damp carpet for a few months to initiate spalting
