  1. well if i were in youre situation, willing to travel ect, id be reading that thread in full, ringing up that company who are also after groundies certified upto cs38, and who pay a quartley bonus, id explain to the boss what youre ambitions are, which as a new upcomming company he should love to hear, and put it to him that youd like the groundie position and wage, and instead of the bonus he pays, ask for it to be replaced with cs39 training and assesment, or help towards the cost/flexibility, then as youre a new climber, and are going to be slow, ask to continue to forfit the bonus in return for 2 or 3 days climbing a week untill the boss is satisfied with youre speed and pace
  2. r.e alex he says he's willing to travel IME its worth it. when in the uk, i worked away from home, found a b+b for £20 per night, as i was out too early for breakfast, and had 4 nights in a row, i got it for £15 per night
  3. if cs 39 is all youre lacking http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/employment/15691-reliable-climber-needed-30-31-38-39-wimbledon-based-company.html#post280212 sounds like a good company, id be asking if theyre willing so substitute the bonus scheme for cs39 and climbing work
  4. if youre motivated and willing to travel, pay for b&b during the week maybe, have you tried these? http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/employment/15972-part-time-work-available-leeds-area.html http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/employment/15691-reliable-climber-needed-30-31-38-39-wimbledon-based-company.html
  5. to the original post, i think the jobs you see advertised are advertising the rates of pay for any level of expertise. tha advertised rate is generally the minumum you will be paid, if you turn up and are worth more than the advertised rate, youre pay will generally reflect this. youre plummer mate studied for 3-4 years to earn over 30K, on the books or S/E? its easily acheiveable to earn 30K plus, on the books, 3 years after a 10 week course´as a climber with the right company
  6. happy birthday gramps:001_tongue:
  7. well you know my views mike, as we discussed, i thought it was about natural ability, you cant 'teach' someone to be good, they either have it, or dont, no matter what age. and imo, the older the person starting, the less likley that natural ability will shine through, like you said, less likley to take risks, push themselves that little bit further, less likley to want to bust a gut to impress their peers or bosses, all of which leads to how good you can potentially be, because you havent done daft things, you havent learnt the limits. even at 23 ive had a fair few climbers on trials with me, for assesments for employers, sure theres been some crap young ones, and it was blatantly obvious they just diddnt have natural ability, they were either failing to try and prove something to themselves, or trying this industry as it sounds like a cool job, and just not hacking it. but its the older climbers with low experience who have been on trials who annoyed me more. being over cautious, which leads to slowess, which is fine if working for youreself, but when its working for someone else, the climber NEEDS to be up to a commercial speed, and a casual attitude of 'ive got my tickets, it doesnt matter if im slow' and dont put the boss above them, where as the younger starters have the drive to be faster, the drive to impress their boss, as they see the boss as way above them, (rightly so) and in my view, it is about speed. the more productive the climber, the more money the boss earns, the more money the boss earns from the climber, the more the climber is worth
  8. 2-3 loads of wood chip from a 40ft dead tree?? what on earth are you chipping into? all you can do is stick youre price in for the time it will take you. no point in lowering youre price only to loose money
  9. diddnt realise the x5 was that good offroad
  10. for the record, i thoroughly enjoyed the whale last week, if you like red meat, i'd highly recommend it, especially with peppercorn sauce- mike that was a stroke of genius:thumbup: its important to embrace other cultures when youre on their turf, tonight ive to decide wether to have reindeer, or moose for tea, no joke! on countryfile, a few months back, they proved that sheep can recognise faces of their friends, and also recognise emotions, i actually wonder wether its better to kill 1 whale to feed many thousands, or hundreds of sheep? back on topic, if you had asked me this question 6 weeks ago, id have said in 1 year, my own uk buisness-those that know me know i had one 90% set up ready to go in a months time, today, id say contract climbing in another country, anywhere but the uk, stress and hassle free oh and in refrence to the eat pollock instead of cod, this should balance fishy ying and yang out, one pollock freshly plucked out of a norwegian fjord 7 days ago:001_smile:
  11. i thought corvids were classed as vermin? they have 2 chances with me, fly or die, its a steep learning curve
  12. well the flights have been canclled, so looks like a train ride or 17 hour pluss buss journey:sneaky2: bit of an eye opener, especially with some of the films out in the past year or 2, that mother nature can grind the world to a standstill
  13. nice one mate! looks real good
  14. cheers stevie thats appreciated but the airport here in bergen has grounded its departing flights, which may start again tommorrow, just have to wait and see, if not it may mean taking a buss train combo tommorrow if not too hungover, or flying later in the week as they will have to honor the flights, and do a few more days with mike either way im not too fussed what happens! have fun at the show mate, and the road trip down!

  21. when i done my tractor ticket 5-6 years ago, we were taught how to enter the cab in the correct mannor by using the steps and rails, doing it incorrectly was a fail

  23. you have good taste my man, i put that ad up on my face book a few weeks back! great minds liam, great minds
  24. its simple, no matter what youre age, if you work hard, are good at what you do, and a model employee, you WILL get work, people WILL want to employ you, and you WILL be paid accordingly. mick, i think the problem is that there are hundreds of young guys who want to be a tree surgeon, but have never even seen a saw or done any hard work, they then go through college, which is at a nice slow steady pace, get given a trial with blokes like you, and suddenly 9/10 of them realise its a bloody hard industry to labour in, let alone be skillfull. imo out of 20 college leavers, 2 or 3 will be capable of working hard, and maybe only 1 will be skillfull and hard working enough to be capable of being a decent tree guy, the other 17 will try, fail, cry, blame everyone else, work in tesco's.
