  1. I saw this on youtube a few months ago and thought I'd have a go where I was felling 1 foot trees in some woodland where there was nothing to hit. I found it only worked if the tree was leaning a little in the direction of fell - with a couple of upright trees I had to have high lift wedges in the middle and one at either side to get the tree over !!
  2. That's really nasty Mozza. Amazing how these things always seem to happen with the smaller type jobs.
  3. Do you not find tree work exciting enough?!
  4. Properly managed woodland will produce an abundance of sustainable firewood without having to clearfell. Properly done this country could produce huge amounts of firewood without destroying any existing woodland...
  5. Took me a full minute to get it!!
  6. I remember mentioning on another forum about modding an 880 and you gave me some good advice Al. But not being a practical sort I've had the muffler modded in the states. I think we're well behind here ref modding saws but it seems now there are plenty people starting to fiddle about!
  7. I sent a muffler for an 880 to be modified by Scott Wajtasik. He's in the States but all he does is specialise in modding mufflers (exhausts). Can't wait to get it back and will post some pics and vids when I do. If you want more info you can e-mail him on [email protected] Let me know if this e-mail address is correct as have just formatted computer.
  8. I found that windows movie maker wouldn't 'see' some video files. But when you look to import into it goto the bottom and instead of 'media files' open drop down menu to 'all files'. It might see them then... but it might not!
  9. I'd offer £75 per butt if they could be loaded onto trailer - looks good oak with no knots and very straight and even, but it's too far away for me.... Yes it is worth more as firewood - but remember you still have to saw it, split it, season it, sell it - in order to get that money.
  10. My firewood is dribbling out rather than rushing. I think mainly down to weather but also because there's a lot more people round here doing it. Soon as it gets cold it'll start flying out I reckon.
  11. Nice - the dirt floor in the polytunnel makes me cough and splutter these windy days!
  12. That's crazy cheap - and I suppose that's to leave all the larger wood behind for your man to sell.... Walk away and let him get on with it....
  13. Great load of pics. I go down surfing around Biarittz several times a year - they do enjoy their pollarding over there!
  14. We've all done stuff outside the book... I like the way he's not actually looking at what he's doing! That's confidence for you!
  15. Cheers - I'll have a look for that!
  16. It's a great idea but I reckon would turn into a nightmare - what about all the vicious people/cowboys who would complain about not getting paid for a rubbish job or people posting just to get back at someone... How would you prove whether people have paid or not? I reckon you'd be better basing the site on just 'bad customers' with maybe a sub section for bad payers. There would be some good stories then! I tried a while ago to see who made those 'builders for hell' series - as it always seemed to be so one sided - how about a 'customers from hell' version... but could never find the people who actually make/produce the programme......
  17. I think the reason why softwood has such a bad name is because of it's name (hardwood just sounds better than softwood) and because of all the problems associated with burning wet softwood.... I sell hardwood bags of logs for £60 and mixed bags (of soft and hard) for £55. Half of my customers go for the mixed wood. So no need to come too far down on price...
  18. Nice job but wow that certainly is a few quid for the MEWP! But like you say if the client will pay that has to have been the safest way of doing the job.
  19. The strip vented bags have the normal white material but it's sort of perforated.... The fully vented bags have 2 side panels and the bottom made from the strip vented material and then 2 sides are from a tough mesh. To be honest I would pay the extra for the fully vented log bags -may be an extra pound but well worth it - you'll be able to turn your logs over faster. Is anyone getting the feeling a may be a fan of these vented bags?!
  20. That's a great way of extending the season. I've actually been more organised this year and have got a list of all log customers. In the spring I'm going to do a mailshot to them offering a third off unseasoned split logs - straight from site to their door! This'll be backed up by as ad in the paper. The only problem I find with many of my customers is they just don't have the storage space and they don't mind paying more for dry logs they just use as they go....
  21. He said he will do the same deal for all arbtalk members. They have tipping loops on them so my plan is to load with forklift - take to customer and either tip them out or unload with swing crane and charge £10 deposit for bag. If they do just 2 lots I'll be happy with that. I will get some pics up soon - on pallets these will season fine outside without a cover (the rain will just drain staight out as the white panels are still made of a vented material). Then under cover for final month before sale. They look the business - much more professional than the normal bulk builders bags and you can see the logs will dry well in them. They are a full cubic metre - highly recommended Pics to follow soon. As said all the materials used in these bags are fully UV stabalised. You may find them 5p cheaper elsewhere but the fellow you speak to Joe knows his products and I will certainly be going back for more when these bags are filled.
  22. Nice Joe - I've been working today as well...
