  1. Very very nice Tom! You must have loved milling that!
  2. Good on you for working in that.... I'm too much of a wimp these days - I'd always leave it for a nicer day but up where you are that's prob not that practical.

That's what I call keen.... But you may not be so keen after doing a couple - bloody hard work and long days up a tree. But I suppose if you want the experience......
  4. One of the best put together videos I've seen! Great work.
  5. Mark that's brilliant mate You can tell you'e done it million times before
  6. I would start off gardening in March and use that to pad out the treework. I don't know about going alone in order to do treework in March though..... I find March and April time is the very leanest time for treework (after all it's prob the worst time to prune trees). Autumn time always the busiest for me
  7. Reading his critique then it does make you wonder how on earth trees manage to reproduce in the wild!? I don't know enough on the subject to comment but even if what he says it's true making planting a tree that complicated is going to put anyone off doing it. What's wrong with just digging a hole and putting it in the ground?!

Portable card machines are really expensive - to hire the machine itself is £35-00 + vat a month and wait for it - you're not allowed to actually buy one! I've had mine for 3 and half years so that's £1,470-00 + vat in rent!! + of course all the processing fees on top

Fieldrunners - I spent a shocking 5 hours on this after downloading!
  10. I'm on my 3rd moisture meter as the first 2 I bought (admittedly not that expensive) seemed to give conflicting readings. Did some research and found Delmhorst seem to be making some of the best meters. Got a couple and they seem to work well - as in consistant readings.
  11. Those front teeth really overlap the bottom jaw.... you're not near bodmin?!
  12. Great! I like the little fella!
  13. I don't know anyone who has not had gear nicked!? There's a few gangs around the Hampshire area at the moment - police are even taking note of unmarked vans reg numbers...... Sorry to hear about the break in - also they usually always come back in a few months just as you've replaced stuff gits
  14. Yoga seems to keep your body healthy (works for me) - keeps all the blood flowing to the right places. Got to find the right person teaching it though... But you have to be prepared to leave pride and ego at the door as you enter the class... It's the one of the least macho things you can do.
  15. Just come back to this thread again.... Pretty interesting but.... ..... looks like I'm firmly in the minority!! Got me thinking about the whole pricing system and the way I do things which is not necessarily a bad thing.
  16. Well to be fair Dave you're taking my argument to a far extreme in order to prove a point. If you look at my previous posts what you have just summarised is a very long way from what I'm saying. Life for me is all shades of grey - there is no such thing as black or white. There is always an exception to the rule. I've had loads of jobs that have turned out much harder, longer, more complicated than I thought them to be when I first looked at them. Poor judgement on my behalf - yes, have I stuck to my price - pretty much always, did I feel bad about increasing the price in those 3 cases that happened - no. It was done in conjunction with the customer. If they had said well sorry but you gave a price and you'll have to stick with it then I would have finished the job for the original price.
  17. I'm gonna crash Phil. But let me know how you get on with this timber.

  18. Arbtalk is really playing my computer up at the mo!! Go for it Phil I reckon - we've all got to start planking and carving somewhere and I'm sure whatever you make will be good. If it isn't you have so much wood there then try again - the only way you learn. Go on have a go at it. Just give us a PM if you need advice and such but bear in mind I'm no expert!

  19. Really? If someone was doing a job for me and they explained that it was more complicated than they thought and so was going to take longer I would let them charge me more. As long as they explained it to me and came at it with the right sort of attitude I wouldn't have a problem with that.
  20. I can't seem to get into the chat room - says it's full! Phil you want to go for that timber he's got 110%! Lovely oak - you'll come across loads of quirky stuff as you go but this sort of oak bloody hard to come by. Even if you plank it and store it - come back to it later.... Go for it mate. How much does he want for it?

  21. Yeh no worrys phil - give me 20 mins and i'll be there,

    cheers, rob

  22. They must thinner hedges where you are! And fair dos doing a gearbox is an extreme example - what about plumbers charging by the hour? Why can't they give a quote on the job when they get there? A lot of their work is pretty much standard stuff..... What I am saying is that whether you give the public a quote, a price or an estimate - they see them all as one and the same IMO. They see this as what you will charge for the job. Bear in mind this is something I have done only 3 times in 8 years - just genuine mistakes where I heavily underquoted. In each case I discussed with customer and they agreed I could increase the price so that at least the job was worth something to me.
  23. One of the most interesting threads I've partaken of in a long time.... Now where is SWB.....!
