  1. Couldn't agree more Tom. Should be making enough money to buy a new rope when you need it or some fancy gizmo for climbing. Doesn't mean you need to though. keep profit high and expensies low should always be a the goal.
  2. Thought i would start a thread regarding the business side of tree work. Any tips from Business owners.? Anything from Marketing, accounts, quotes and of course growing a successfull business, lesson learnt etc. I'll start from obvious ones - Do everything is writing, makes quotes detailed and have terms and conditions on your quotes. ..even the nicest client can turn sour and if your quote doesn't state exactly what needs done they will try to get more work done.
  3. Rip off prices depend on your set -up. A company with 3 vans, unimogs, yard, 10 employees etc should be making a fortune everyday because of there overheads. they might quote 1/2 days work for £800 because its what they need to stay in business...and they do get the work. I think its fine if they make that much. Guys who quote £150 for half days work is ok if they are just by themselfs with a trailer and no chipper. but what about fuel? disposel fees and all other overheads? if you business grows then £150 for 1/2 a day won't last... give it couple years and you will be charging double that for 1/2 days work.
  4. I am doing a job this week. 1 tree, 1 day, 3 men, 2 loads. Guy who quoted before me says £1500+ vat.!! It all depends on how busy you are though..if you are overwhelmed with work then i think its ok to quote a bit higher on bigger stuff...but some people just chance it.
  5. Cheers Littletree. Yeah Will be tough for while..but Edinburgh is a world apart from glasgow. David - If it all goes smooth i will prob be looking for hand on jobs .but it will be at least 2 years before i have enough costumers to make a living and enough work to get other climbers out.
  6. My Missus has been offered well paid job in Edinburgh but we stay in Glasgow and don't want her to commute daily. I am looking for work out that way on a subbie basis only. My business in Glasgow is going well and growing but long story short...Glasgow is a Dump! and don't want been held here by established business. I am exp climber. Have own woodchipper, truck, all tools, insurance. Would be willing to come out climb from 7.30am till 6pm with truck and chipper for day rate. will work weekends etc. Cheers, Martyn
  7. I would do it for £300 and take 1 hr. Not bad hourly rate.
  8. would love to use it but its to expensive. fuels from pertol etc have shown to cause cancer and it also reduces testostorone levels which is really bad and makes you more prone to many of ailments .
  9. mmmm. stell core bridges is something manufacturers should be thinking about. nipped my rope and bridge before only a matter of time before something cuts the bridge and bad accident will happen
  10. pushing your luck me thinks dadio. Plenty other avenue to get that tree down safer. Was the price so tight on it that you felt you had to same time by doing a risky fell?? Or do you like living on the edge?
  11. looks handy if you don't want a stick to roll down the hill into a house. More you know the better i suppose. thats how you get better..by trying new things.
  12. that was a good vid. thanks for posting.
  13. just out of college tree surgeons expecting to earn hundreds because they have there tickets!....or even worse 2 weeks crash course tree surgeons. Leylandi trees. Costumers and non payers. How the arbor gear industry rips us off! charing us prices like we earn a lot. Leylandi trees.
  14. Yip. I really do! Next costumer who wants quote to remove one......i am going to recommend blowing it up with C4. - job done.
  15. I've seen a big lump fail on a euc before while someone was climbing it. the branch attachment points can be weak. like other trees..just be carefull and if you are worried tie around a bigger branch or use a cambium saver.
  16. Never done a Crane removal before so can't comment much....but it looked like they didn't really think about where they should tie branches on. if they are not exp in crane work why did they take such big lumps ? very lucky with some of those chunks.
  17. You do a lot of pressing Yeti? I got a shoulder injury last year after pressing a lot. worked up to 110k front press at 15.3stone. Not a really heavy weight compared to real strongmen but i was happy with it. Will need to try these pushups plyometric way - Bet the are really tough do to the maximum contraction.
  18. Well had a go today. done it on gymnastic rings. Its actually called ladder training...1,2,3,4,5 = 15 etc. good way to build mass and strength wihtout burnout. wasa good warmup
