  1. I disagree, I think it shows you know your stuff, they have called you in as an expert, so you should be a "smart arse" when it comes to trees. We of cause need to be polite and not come across as arrogant. Like Andy says, its a lot of fuss about bugger all. Its good for us boys as it means we need to do very little to impress the punters. I looked a job the other day, where I had worked next door a few years, I told them it had been me next door they said "Oh you looked very professional, with all the safety gear, helmet, etc",
  2. We upgraded all our phones a few weeks back, me and two sons went for iPhones, my mrs went for a blackberry, before the 14 days were up we sent back my mrs's blackberry and got her an iPhone too. She was having loads of problems with the blackberry, as soon as she got the iPhone she had no problems and is very happy with it.
  3. Nonsense I'm with Steve, tree of heaven, from the picture and description.
  4. Your not using a saw and its not for money, so I don't think you need any certs, I've done a couple of comps and was not asked for certs at either.
  5. The smoking ban is great, means I can enjoy a pint or a meal without being poisoned and my eyes stinging, not to mention the way my cloves would smell the following day!!! My iPhone battery lasts longer the a day. As for a smoker taking about brain washing and people being told they can't live without something (what like an addition??) thats just bonkers when you consider their habit will more than likely lead to their early demise and often in the most unpleasant manner. What I really don't get is all this vitriol about Apple??? No one is holding a gun to anyones head, it not the law that you must have one, if done like them don't buy one, its really simple I think my iPhone adds to my life, which is great. Just last week we had taken our girls to a children's jungle gym type place in the morning, we were thinking of going home, I asked my lass if she fancied the flicks, she did, googled the cinema on my phone, great film starting in 10 minuets, nice one!!, off we go, happy days What is the big problem????
  6. All the client wants is some paper work to cover their ass. For things like hedge cutting etc, I would be inclined to do and recored some in-house training and give the client paper work showing evidence of this, along with the relevant HSE legislation that states this is all thats required.
  7. Its all very well finding fault with child labour and other such things in the less developed parts of the world, but how much do we really know about these children's circumstances?? If the factory closes what happens?? do they starve?? I don't know?? I don't like taking actions (such as boycotting products) without enough information to truly know what affect that action will have and in this day and age getting facts is very, very difficult, propaganda is rife. __________________

  9. Most trees can be dead for a few years before becoming dangerous, I would just leave it and see what happens personally, if nothings been done in 12 months time I'd maybe think about finding out who it belongs to.
  10. I think thats most villages unfortunately.
  11. If you get a felling licence you can fell, even if the trees are TPO'd. Felling licence normally dictates replacement trees and as a TPO is actually a charge on the land the TPO would transfer to the new trees, I would imagine.
  12. Grafted Cherrys do it too, often at the break of the crown, but sometimes at ground level.
  13. Dean a "quote" is a fixed price, its an "estimate" thats flexible.
  14. I believe a felling licence actually over rules a TPO.
  15. On one job I felled and burnt two large Beech trees, access was bad, we just cut up the lot and pilled it on the fire, used the blower to turbo charge the fire. In three days we felled and burn the lot. I've burn on council jobs with no problems at all, as Peter says up to 10 tonnes per day. But your smoke must not cause a "nuisance."
  16. Sooooo true!! Plus the old "they don't TPO Sycamores" Or "its TPO'd, but its OK just to prune it, no need for permission just to prune it"
  17. Very true, but I wonder how many trees are felled because the owner fears they may become TPO'd? A great many IME.
  18. "Stump shot", not heard this before, what is it??
  19. What gets me is so many people fail to put pictures on Arbtrader, I guess its because they have to pay, but they happily pay for ebay:confused1: It really annoys me when I see a post telling me there is an item in arbtrader which interests me, I go look and there are no pic's
  20. I'm not "fixated" at all, just fail to see there relevance to this situation. I fully understand the leverage principle, but again (as a pull line was installed) that has no relevance here. I think we both agree that the hinge was too thin, you feel this was down to the gob size, I feel it has more to do with the back cut. The bottom line is that the guy with the saw cocked up
  21. surly the size of the back cut every bit as much influence on the size of the hinge as the gob, his hinge was to thin because his back cut was to deep. Moving the hinge back (which is a fulcrum) makes pulling the top easier not harder. The only advantage to a shallow gob is it allows the use of wedges, but I often find a larger gob means wedges are not needed.
  22. I filled up my can and stump grinder the other day and then realised I'd left my wallet at home They were really nice about it, they would not take a card payment over the phone or allow me to make an online payment or a cheque, but I just filled in a form and agreed to call in and pay before the end of the week.
