  1. People are often nicer than you think. Me and two mates walked the Dales Way a couple of weeks back, on the Sunday the weather was horrendous and we had 25+ miles to cover. Early afternoon we were soaked to the skin and in need of shelter so we could eat a sandwich and put on some dry cloths, we had been looking out for a barn or just a bridge under which we could escape the down pour. After a while we had found nowhere to shelter and came across a small hamlet, my mate knocked on a door to ask if there was an out build we could use, a lovely lass came to the door and invited us unto her home and made us hot coffee!!! Later that same day further along our walk there was a sign saying a house up ahead offered hot drinks and snacks, some how we missed the correct house and a knocked on the door of different house, a Polish girl answered, I asked if this was the house that did brews "no" she replied "but I will make you a drink, what would you like?" She made us some lovely fresh ground coffee and gave us biscuits. She invited us in, but by then the rain had stopped so we were happy to drink it out side. These people knew they would never see us again and there was no opportunity for them to get a favour in return, they were just being kind because thats how they are!!!!
  2. Yes meant competition, thats thats dyslexia and spell check for you:001_rolleyes: I get a correctly spelt word, but it may not be the correct word:blushing:
  3. I simply don't believe this is true. If your driven into by a drink driver or someone running a red light will there insurance pay out?? of course it will, their own loses may not be covered, but a third parties will be.
  4. Why?? IME, the guys with the most bits of paper had the least skill, the most skilled guys I've met in this industry have very few tickets, they don't need them, their work speaks for its self.
  5. I am only doing it because he's my son, I'd not be looking for an apprentice other wise. IME, your training up the future competent.
  6. I have taken my son on through this scheme, its working very well for us. Because he is only 17 the NPTC units are fully funded, so far he has done chipper, first aid, and 3 of the saw units.

    Hello

    Do they have teenage sons???
  8. Stop worrying then, you must be making plenty and really in demand!!
  9. Or you could grow a set and stop moaning, if you can't compete find a new career.
  10. Butchers blocks are Sycamore.
  11. Regarding boldness, "they don't thatch an empty barn" "grass does not grow on a busy street" A clever twist on an old one, "You can lead a whore to culture, but you can't make her think"
  12. I think the word your looking for is "scrap":sneaky2:

    After Arb

Don't give up!! EVER!!! Thats my motto. "you don't stop doing things because you get old, you get old because you stop doing things!" I'm almost 44 and feel great! Couple of weeks ago I walked the Dales way, 75+miles walked in three days carrying a decent pack and my two companions where both older than me and incredibly fit!! I find nothing sadder than seeing ex-climbers hugely obese. Age is just a number.
  14. I don't think Lime will last long left out in the elements.
  15. Are your wanting a financial contribution from those in the big house, or just their consent to carry out the works??
  16. Yes but there is nothing stopping them from raising their price per tonne
  17. Do you often talk to yourself???
  18. Sorry for your loss, your post is a nice tribute to your father
  19. A few months ago the bearing on the radiator fan failed on the mog whist we were heading down the M6. I got the back pack blower, stuck the pipe through the front grill, tied it to the front mount chipper and put it on full rev's, got us home.
  20. Just leave untill the leave wilt, getting quite late in the year now, leaves are already starting to turn, but if the leaves are still good it's worth a go, IMO
  21. I often have part seasoned timber, it comes back to my yard over weeks, months and years, I then sell it by the arctic load. So not all seasoned timber is the result of bad planning.
  22. There are many different business models. I don't here people complaining about insurance Co's offering to beat other quotes. I don't want to win all my work based purely on the lowest price, but if I were running several gangs and wanted most of the work in my area it may be the way to go.
