  1. i did try and prop it ... but when it rocked back the prop would fall out !! have a mate who owes me a favour to come round but trying not to be to "needy"
  2. Yeah the ground does move a little and can see one of the roots near the truck has defo snapped ... what does it mean when you say "looks like the leaf cover is thicker in the centre of the crown? "
  3. nah ... no big drama if it hits the deck ... unless the mother in law is under it ....... my5tuff's Recent Uploads | Photobucket have uploaded 3 images from this morning .. not very good ones .. sun coming up and was dark when i got home.
  4. thanks for the info ... will put them back upright and/or empty the oil and/or look a bit carefully and try and see what the dealio is !
  5. from time to time I come back and there is puddle of oil where the stihl saws are stored (get irregular (monthly summer ... fortnightly winter) use from me ) Could this be dripping out the bottom with the saws in it normal resting point ? Or would it be better to leave them on their side (blade flat on the floor) with the tanks uppermost ? Cheers Chris
  6. I have a reasonably sized Large English Walnut in our garden and last year in one of the storms I noticed that it was swaying .. actually more like rocking .... the roots on my neighbours side have definitely been compromised. I took some lower limbs off last year to reduce the weight on the side it leans towards (our side) .. and this year it delivered a good crop of walnuts hand picked by the squirrels and collected by me ! My question is ... given its been in this wobbly condition (only in bad wind) for over 9 months ... do we think the tree can rebuild roots and power on ? (Will try and get some photos tomorrow morning) My concern is the tree produced a good crop as a "last grenade" before it packs up and dies. Yours curiously Chris
  7. have a partly dead cherry tree in the garden (half gives cherries .. the other half had no leaves this year) ... we did some tree work to cut back some of the dead branches but on one of the old limbs near the main trunk at the weekend found a hole facing ~south sadly my dad isnt with me so thought I would ask the experts on here ... the glove gives the scale of the size of the hole (pretty big ) .. is it woodpecker ? now there is another 15ft above the hole ... is best practice to leave things alone ? cheers chris
  8. Cheers all. Lovely looking back and reading dad's posts; cringing at all the terrible puns. Keep up the good work. Treemendous as Dad might have said !
  9. Hi, Late notice for this but my late father was bats-n-trees (Alan) and I know he was a keen member on here for a while discussing ecology and woodland stuff .. he also had a terrible line in bad puns. He died of larynx cancer in Feb but fought it to the end. His ashes are up in Herefordshire on the marcle ridge with a 270 degree view of Glos/Herefordshire and Wales. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=marcle+ridge&client=firefox-a&hs=oYv&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=cWREUujuFeSp0QWliYGoCQ&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAQ&biw=1280&bih=793&dpr=1#facrc=_&imgdii=_&imgrc=7Fyx2aadhdR_zM%3A%3BXm4o7ym0DeBT1M%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Ffarm1.staticflickr.com%252F46%252F108112578_cdbed62aa5_z.jpg%253Fzz%253D1%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.flickr.com%252Fphotos%252Finsectman%252F108112578%252F%3B640%3B480 It would be his 68th birthday next week ... so have a walk in the woods and spot some interesting things for him. God Bless Chris
  10. thanks for the info .. given they are £900 new ... think I will get it repaired !!
  11. thanks all ! so when you say fell and leave the leaves on ... is that a few weeks or a few days ? in the past we have felled and tidied up straight away to keep access clear and make a safer working environment but if it helps the seasoning might well be a better option
  12. hi my trusty honda 476c mower broke yesterday .. the roller seems to have come off (see picture) the mower fixing man is on a 2-3 week wait .. wondered if anyone had any experience on fixing this ..is it straightforward ? Cheers Citrus
  13. Is it true that silver birch can be cut now and burned this winter ? (low moisture content) I have access to some birch and sycamore. I know the sycamore will be a few years before I can use it .. so just trying to plan my next few years !
  14. Hi, A mate inherited a mixed ~30 acre field/wood in Cobham in Surrey that has some old oak, some pine and silver birch etc ..~300 trees ..but the wood has had no management ...probably ever ! Is there any free advice out there on how best to manage it ... me and him are happy to do the work and manage it going foward but wanted to blag some free/cheap advice for starters. Regards Citrus
  15. the position is sheltered and up against a wall ...but it would be exposed to strong winds that come across the downs but they are southerly winds ...(tho might get some easterlies ......<ooh siberia>)
