Had a customer a couple of years ago how said part payment would be cash rest bank transfer, not a problem i said. Job was done in two parts paid cash on first part then reduced work on second part so less to pay, was £550 only paid £500 into account  message no answer landed up emailing with 7 days to pay.

£50 IS £50

I’ve occasionally been in a situation where the customer has said that, but has gone on to say they’ve had 2 cheaper prices , (and shown me their quotes), but didn’t like the approach or attitude or appearance of those contractors.
So normally I’ve moved a little, but negotiated doing a little less.
Of course some try it on,but not all.

I recently dropped a similar sized quote by a similar amount, just agreed to let the customer do the final cleanup/rake/blow

That's a good call. Say you can drop the price if we don't do x y or z, don't book it in but drop onto the job when it's convenient, book it in when you are slack for work etc. I would only do that though if it was a straight forward job, the customer didn't want to know the ins and outs of a ducks arse and they didn't come across as a potential pita that initially want to save £50 but want the job doing for sweet fa.

Ask them if they haggle on the price in the supermarket?

Do you always pay the full price on a new car, chipper or whatever or haggle?

It could be that the person wants to make sure they've got the best price and if you say you can't lower it they're happy that they've asked.

I wonder if £550 is a good price to put in for a job, it's almost like the £50 is just hanging on in there for no reason. Whereas if you'd initially said £595, it sounds like it's a £600 job that you've already knocked a fiver off!

I do think aswell, that the type of person who argues about money before the job has even started, could turn out to be the type of person that you struggle to get payment out of after the job is done :hmmmm:

You have to be able to trust them :vollkommenauf:
