Yes, of course the Grenfell fire was a tragedy.

Those irreplaceable lives lost are obviously more important than any building,

This part is complete bollocks...   Building are worth more than lives, at least some are..

How many Jews died defending Jerusalem during the Roman Invasion to put down their rebellion?...

Do you think they would of put their lives on the line for a mere building or two?.. but they did for their temple..

a friend used the same argument some yrs back when the riots in London were taking place, I suggested the army shoot em all on sight.. but they're only building being burned down he said..

Fine I said, go out shopping and I'll burn your house to the ground, tell me then its just a building...

And therein lies the modern problem of internet comments - people are happy to have and publish their opinions regardless of how removed they are from the actual issue or their level of knowledge of the situation and related events or the fall out from them.

Put them in the front line and they will probably have a completely different opinion. It is just too easy to sprout a lot of ignorant bull crap online. If we all were stood in the same room I suspect a lot of what has been posted on this thread would have not been said or said differently - and this applies to pretty much any thread anywhere on the internet. Easy to be brave behind the anonymity of the screen.

The old saying about having two ears and one mouth and using them in that proportion is turned on its head on the internet.

We could all do with a bit of humility, a healthy dose of education and a lot of careful thought before assaulting the keyboard with a lot self righteous crap that gets posted everyday.

Maybe they should introduce an hours delay between us pressing the submit button and it actually appearing or an hour between reading something & being able to respond - giving some time to think & reconsider the knee jerk reactions that pop into our heads and generally get posted.

This certainly would have saved me from some minor embarrassment in the past had I engaged brain a bit more before the fingers ?

nowt as strange as folk is another apt saying.

All true, but where’s the fun in that?

Vesp, you really are a twat aren't you.

So if you went out shopping and came home and found that your wife and kids and the rest of your family had been murdered, you go "thank Goodness I still have my house and my shed". Shut up you weapon grade stroker.

Two completely different events, not really comparable I don’t think, I’d go as far as to say it’s a bit silly to compare them and even sillier to try and tell people what they should be sad about and how much sadness they should give to certain events. Crazy.

Those irreplaceable lives lost are obviously more important than any building, but just because people die in fires doesn’t mean that you shouldnt reflect on the near destruction of one of the most important buildings in the world.

Notre Dame is a hugely significant place in world history and for millions of people in France and beyond a priceless symbol of cultural identity and belonging.

It's important to remember there isn’t a finite amount of empathy, you can express sadness for Notre Dame and still feel sorry for the victims of Grenfell.

The two are not mutually exclusive.

The part that I disagree with are the various band wagon sort that are using the fire to get likes online and to almost score points on the latest tragedy. All over Instagram

Well,  its an ill wind that blows nobody any good, so lets us hope something positive comes out of this tragedy.

Perhaps a good start would be to review the vulnerability to fire of all the beautiful UK Cathedrals and Churches and install sprinklers and hydrants where appropriate.
