  1. For the band wheels I use 20” diameter spa taper lock pulleys running a b type belt, this combo runs an inch and a quarter band nicely. The reason I would steer clear of pillow blocks is when you toe out your band wheels to track your band you are exerting forces on them in the wrong axis which will cause them to fail and cause you band tracking issues. I went with a 38 mm en16 shaft running taper bearings to take the load which I machined myself as I have a lathe and mill.
  2. I had a fair bit of stuff lying about for the build, so for materials minus the engine and axle a ball park figure of two grand. When the accounts are done I will get a more accurate total.
  3. Quick pic of my saw head,I lift it on and off with the teleporter.
  4. I’ll get some photos up in a couple of days as I’ve some ash to slab, I made mine to take a 42” diameter log 5 meters long and trailed so mobile. As I was making it from scratch and I have a large supply of large logs I went large As Andy said earlier accuracy is very important for keeping the band going in the right direction also in reducing vibration in the band. I would also try and steer clear of using pillow block bearings for the band. if you get stuck let me know I’d be happy to help Simon
  5. I’ve built one from scratch,if you’re looking ideas look at the cooks saw range of bandsaws on their website, some good vids on there. Also the American forestry forums are a goldmine for info.
  6. A ten year old boy was killed in late June 2007 and two of his class mates hurt after a beech tree suddenly dropped a branch on a national trust estate in Norfolk.
  7. If you do re anneal the band support it well either side otherwise as you heat it it can bend very easily.
  8. Does sound like a annealing issue or lack of.
  9. Forgot about Suffolk woodchip, he had a couple of artic loads of conni chip of a job few months ago easy to deal with and payed 12 pounds a ton collected. Going back to fuel use my chipper is 125hp and uses around 7 litres an hour of diesel.
  10. Might be worth speaking to Collins Farm and forestry at saxmundham.
  11. Scaffold debris netting tough and cheep.
  12. BTS are the company who do a lot of the line clearance in Norfolk.
  13. Been through this with my machine when it wouldn’t feed, first thing I would do is clean and polish the thicknesser bed before playing with anything else.
  14. Could it be a band wheel out of shape?
  15. Drum chippers are more efficient as they do cut with the grain rather than against it, the drum also allows bigger capacities but they are a lot heavier to cope with the bigger forces imparted by and on the drum. The bandit system of feeding at an angle onto a disk allows a bigger surface area of cut.
  16. I’ve looked into a bit more apparently the electric car brigade have the same problem with there chargers, the only cure I can find apart from a separate supply is to replace the rcd with a special type b rcd . Funny thing is I can use the lathe all day running two motors on one inverter ( coolant pump) but soon as I use the metal cutoff saw it trips randomly.
  17. Also something to consider with an inverter, in can play silly buggers with your rcd as I have just found out.
  18. Very nice, made a ugly drum smoker a few years ago hot smoked brisket yum yum.
  19. Most farms had a two phase supply in the old days,a lot of the old feed mills were two phase. Unfortunately ours is only single phase, looked into a rotary phase converter good bit of kit to run multiple motors in phase but the price of electricity now I need to see if diesel is cheaper when running big motors.
  20. Over 2500 acres of maize went into one bio digester near wells off the holkam estate.
  21. I’m in the middle of installing a 125 kw Gilles woodchip boiler to heat the Farm bought it secondhand for little money after the rhi changed and the hall it was in went for a new model to comply with the new rhi. Not intrested in any grants or rhi all I want is to burn my own woodchip rather than oil and save money and utilise a waste product. Last year I got involved with contract maize carting for the bio digesters, how this is green is beyond me, just chopping it the harvester is burning 1000 litres of diesel a day and tractors carting are burning around 250 litres a day that’s without growing the crop.
  22. After the last apple phone died I replaced it with a ule fone, still going strong after months of abuse.
