  1. Do you find they will run without a base gasket ( about 20 thou is what i look for ) without any turning work ...wondered if they will would you rase the port hight to readjust or take the extra blow down. There a speed freek so i was thinking you would be looking for revs .
  2. Yea Im with you about the general rules....I was more interested if you have found the 357 responds to anything in particular or a general re working of the ports. Of corse the 357 "recipe" is one you have refined over the years so there is experience gained by the numbers you'v ported.
  3. Question if you don't mind me asking....is it a width change in your recipe on the port/ports in general or is it combined with any hight changes. I know there is a lot to describe if you gave a full description including transfer work (if done as well) so just a outline would be cool .
  4. Not off the top of my head ...Andrew is your man and should be able to tell you about the saw and get parts as Dolmar make Makita and parts sub over. Look on the Forum page ..scroll down and look for "Dolmar" in big red letters. Simon
  5. Give Shavey..Andrew ..AJS chainsaws( Dolmar )a PM or post a question on his forum.
  6. Good point ...Thats worth adding in the info as I'm sure some folk will think they can come back to you "Months" down the line ! I haven't had this sorry situation happen to me with saws iv sold...Yet !
  7. I would say putting that the saw "Must "be used with two stroke oil in the fuel and that you will not except returns in your listing should about cover it . I would also put a instruction sheet in with the saw at despatch as a insurance policy as well.
  8. Gotcha ...that explains the splined H jet and no limiter cap..
  9. So what actual 7000 series saw have you got ... 7900...7901...etc ?
  10. Your saw has "likely" got limiter cap/caps over the L &H jet screws depending on its age. The red one is the H and the white..if there ..is one is the L jet. A flat small screwdriver is the tool and as long as you can retune within the range of movement you won't need to pull the limiter caps.
  11. Its posable to go new ( Dolmar..Echo..saws can be had for that money)but think a bit more money is needed than 350 if you are thinking of Stihl -Husqvarna. As your Dad is familiar with Stihl then just getting something in the second hand Pro range made by them in the 90s-2000s is going to give you a increase in power to weight and still feel familiar to your Dad. Spud mentioned the Ms 260, (or earlier 026, both pro saws) good sub over from the 028 ..BUT..condition is Key !! Don't overlook a 024 av as its a pro saw as well...lite and fine for firewood with a 15-16in bar on it (shorter bars will cut bigger wood remember). Regardless of wether you consider The Most excellent ! 346 or 357 or Stihl saws ,or any second hand pro saw it can't be over stressed...Cheep ones are not CHEEP for no reason ! there broke or need a full refurb so for 250-350 you should do fine from a good trustworthy dealer ,user or private seller.
  12. So what was the fault ??
  13. I assume with the description you gave that the flywheel has been off to do the work....is it back in the correct position ?
  14. Ms 290 ..Husqvarna 51 and a Nice old school saw that 036 av super...Ready to go for next week.

Might make it a tad ...nose heavy ! and spoil any balance .2nd thoughts ..how about a sexy little Sugi 15 inch number with a 20 LPX on it
  16. Its a semi pro saw made by Dolmar for Makita as the parent company so its not a lower market end saw. Some like the black and orange of the Dolmar brand and some don't mind the Makita colours . The Dolmar Ps 420 sc you would get from Shavey (Ajs saws ) is a newer model with a tad more power. Good priced saw the one you have looked at so pays your money .......
  17. If the power is correct in the add it looks like the lower output equivalent to the Dolmar ps 420 sc. The early 420 was 2.7 ish HP.

It is a Noble thing you do !! I know he is champing at the bit to use it.
  20. As much as i like you Barrie...errrr ..NO Thankyou ! Ha Ha . I always find it strange how "some" folks present kit to have it looked at. Maybe its me but I take my car in for a service lets say.. and it gets a wash down before if at all posable. Its few and far between that stuff comes in even "Remotely" brushed over..gives a clue to how much the stuff is looked after during the season though i suppose.
  21. Indeed it do :big grin:
  22. Me..Mostly old petrol and some throttle body cleaner ..OH ! and elbow grease
  23. Nose weight of a bar can make things feel much harder and the saw more unwieldy to use so i would say 15 in bar is plenty for most normal jobs. A lite powerhead is undermined by long bars IMO.
