  1. This could be the "Genesis" of a whole new thread.
  2. In this country we would be milling oak like that not making it into firewood !
  3. Fair bit of firewood for next winter there. If you don’t fancy a job don’t do it, better to walk way safe than have to run away in a hurry.
  4. Why can't you use a chainsaw? I'd recommend the wee sthil 120 battery saw, light and quiet.
  5. In my experience if you are thinking it's too much for you to do yourself then listen to yourself and get a pro in to do it. I've never regretted getting the local arborist in to drop a few tricky ones on my property. You get peace of mind and if you get on with him he'll explain how and why he's going to do it and you might pick up a few bits of wisdom. my local chap, Mark Lloyd, is a lovely chap and does a great tidy job for a sensible days pay, whats not to like about that !
  6. 440 550 365 oh and a wee sthil 120 battery saw. Started with a mittox which got used and abused for a number of years before it died, and in fact in terms of wood cut per £ spent was the best value of them all...so far !
  7. Very new ! I used to dive with a buddy who didn't have a knife, he took a big heavy pair of scissors with him ! Reckoned cutting line and rope was easier, to be fair my knife mostly was used to cut cheese to make a sarnie !
  8. Gosh brings back memories, I had a Fenzy ABLJ. No dry suits or direct feed hoses then, no dive computer just watch, depth gauge and tables. I was a BSAC diver too.
  9. I burn Scots pine a lot and its great, dries quick and is easy to split. Just sometimes get gummy hands handling it as some bits can have resin on them.
  10. Depends how much you want to spend.
  11. I wasn’t really talking about business management just my dislike of spending my PAYE salary !
  12. We’ve never met yet you know me so well !
  13. If you haven’t guessed I’m Scots and tight as a ducks arse !
  14. I’ll have to look out for one when they become available in Sthil AK20/30 copy as it kills me to think of spending £90 for a second battery when I got the saw, battery and charger for £175.
  15. Are they any good ? Or is it a case of buying cheap buying twice ?
  16. My mate is a retired electrical design engineer, he reckons my saw battery costs about a few quid to make, I know there is distribution costs etc to factor in but the manufacturer seems to be making a fortune on the batteries and even more on the chargers. Eventually there will be Chinese copies for 1/4 of the price.
  17. Rotatech strech like crazy, not good quality at all, almost single use disposable chain. I stopped using them a few years ago. Wouldn't put them on a battery saw where a good sharp chain is a must. As Rough hewn said Sthil battery saws are good but need a good quality sharp chain.
  18. If you've got the makita battery and charger then go makita, not heard anything bad about them. The machines aren't too expensive the money is in the batteries and chargers. I don't have any other battery tools so i bought the Sthil 120 battery saw and love it. As has been said don't make it work too hard and keep the chain sharp and you'll have yourself a right handy little saw, especially for stop/start jobs like cutting up branches for firewood etc.
  19. I got the Sthil 120 battery saw (Rough Hewn's advice) with the 12 inch bar and its great, used it loads this winter on mostly Birch and Syc coppice and love it. Still need petrol saw for anything over 10 inch, it is a really useful little tool. Picco is an arse pain to sharpen tho ! its easy to keep clean too, I'm a bit OCD about clean tools. Can see me replacing the bigger saws in the shed with battery in the future, but not for a while yet, battery and charger prices are a bit too much.
  20. I did quite a bit of syc this winter and find it snaps quite suddenly on you at times, did the last few with the 45 degree down dog tooth to release the holding wood and it seemed to help. But they weren't very big and all were felled with the lean.
  21. I've been clearing some old syc this winter and have regularly "located" staples and old wire in them, couple of chains badly damaged, please don't hammer staples in and wrap wire round trees its just a disaster for the trees and the saw coming to harvest them years later. Electric quick and easy alternative and i do like the sound of the live willow hedge/fence.
  22. I’m with Kriss, MENTAL !
