  1. Camera up now just after the horse has bolted !!
  2. Just had someone "help themselves", (steal), to 5 trailer loads of split dry stacked logs from my yard ! Just climbed the gate and helped themselves the bast**ds, about 5 cube of larch, hope they put it on an open fire and it sparks and burns the house down ! Phoned the police who weren't interested, would have got a better response from the boy scouts!
  3. Rugby reference and a reference to the fact I went grey in my teens !
  4. Had a new lad help me a few weeks ago, brush and shovel were his main work tools ! Get your own ppe then think about a saw. good comfy boots, work trousers, work coat a good helmet and a vizi vest is all you need to start with.
  5. I get quite a lot of oak branches and they won't dry in 2 seasons unless they are split, the bark just seals the water in, its good firewood if you mix it with other stuff. I mix it with mostly soft and sycamore and that works well in my stoves. It keeps the fire lit for a long time.
  6. Round our way there are a few willow plantations on wet crap ground, they get harvested every 3 years or so by a specialist machine that spits out giant hay bale like blocks of willow that goes as a fuel. It seems to grow like weeds and they don't have to replant as the root stool is left behind. Was alway lead to believe that coppice was good for nature, is this mechanised coppicing good too ???
  7. Ordered some files and a file holder, I'll see how i get on, but think your tactic might be the way forward !! I'm very OCD about sharpening and keeping my tools clean. the little 120 is easy peasy to keep clean.
  8. I’ve never sharpened a picco chain, any tips ? Other than make sure I’ve got my glasses on and a good light.
  9. Used the little battery saw today, what a wee cracker! Light as a feather and cut a whole cube of branches on a single charge. I know it is early days but have been very impressed will give more feed back when I’ve done a few more jobs with it.
  10. I've a 550 mk 2 its a brilliant saw. The key is to keep on top of sharpening, cleaning and general maintenace of the saw. This 550 will likely see me out ! I too do quite a bit of firewood , more than hobby but not for a living.
  11. AC or DC quite literally !
  12. Yeah I tried cheapo and decent corded saws and battery’s, makes a big difference if you try before you buy. Local guy gave a good discount too and he’s a decent bloke too !
  13. Yeah bit more versatility with the battery saw, I can use it for snedding and other jobs, will be more useful in the long run, I’ll just have to get over the cost of the batteries and charger !
  14. Went to local lawnmower guy, who does a load of saws too, had a wee play with a couple of corded electric and a battery saw. Bought a stihl battery one as I can use it for more jobs. Got a good deal on the 120. Thanks for all the advice, guess I’ll be a stihl battery saw guy from now on. will report back once I’ve used it a bit.
  15. Totally agree I just need to decide which plug in saw to get, as I’m Scottish I’m swayed by the cheap Titan pro but think it might melt so likely to get either the stihl or the husky not sure which tho.
  16. I might change the habit of a lifetime and get the little stihl corded saw. Need something to do branches on a sawhorse at the house.
  17. I’ve access to mains electricity so don’t need a battery saw, need a decent corded saw, any advice ?
  18. I'm also in the market for a wee corded saw to use near the house, all my others are Husky (440, 550 &365). So looking more at one of them but the little stihl is a good bit cheaper and to be honest it won't get too much hard work. Can't justify the cost of a battery set up yet but who knows in the future ? Any opinions welcomed .
  19. I would agree with the bollocks suggestion! Did he try to sell you a 500i replacement yet ?
  20. This is an easy problem, just put your hand in your pocket and pay a pro to do it ! Likely a climb and dismantle job. Nothing destroyed and no one gets hurt. It’s just money, you can earn more, but arms and legs don’t grow back !
  21. I used a little husky 440 on a 15" bar for years for firewood and on occaision an 18" bar it was great.
  22. File for dinks and a stone for finishing, very relaxing job. I enjoy sharpening.
  23. I really enjoyed it, it’s something that I’ve always wanted to learn.
  24. My job today is to rescue the chains that hit nails yesterday ! A day in the shed with a file !
  25. Wife did it today, I did firewood and stayed out the way !
