  1. I was looking for an electric saw a few weeks ago and got the Sthil 120 battery saw, thought about a corded saw but battery is mor versatile. It’s a wee cracker, a good bit more than a Titan, but having tried both the Sthil is a different class. You won’t regret it, I haven’t and as I’ve said many times before on Arb talk I’m tight as fu+k !
  2. I used a hot glue gun to glue an oil bottle on to my 2 stroke mix 5 litre plastic can. But I’m tight as fu+k!
  3. Consultants can work in the private sector only in there own time. Many therefore don’t work full time NHS so they can do private. Many don’t as the return for the time isn’t as good as people think. I do logs in my free time, and play golf, head space is more important to me than money. My wife runs and sews, it’s all about balance. Just to quote Yoda !
  4. It may have changed but agency medical staff are essentially self employed .
  5. Forgot to say agency also don’t get paid leave or sick pay.
  6. Full time, and PT, NHS staff are not allowed to do agency work, although they can work over time and most hospitals have a bank of staff willing to do this. To be an agency staff you have to be wholly employed by the agency who negotiate your pay on your behalf, and take a hefty cut for doing so. Agency staff do get paid more than normal staff, but a large part of the difference is taken by the Agency "middlemen" ! Being an agency nurse means you don't however get a pension contribution by your employer and you are responsible for your own NI and tax. Also you go from one place to another often on a daily basis !
  7. Had 5 cube nicked last week all split and stacked. They will steal anything these days and must have taken ages to hand ball away. locally logs go for £75 a cube so about £375-350 for a bit of light fingered activity .
  8. minus 2 here already an a pea soup fog to go with it.
  9. It was the file that came with guide so perhaps not the best. Can see using the dremel being the first choice tho ! 👍
  10. The file just bent at the junction with the wooden handle, i bought the Stihl file plate guide and hold both ends when i file, and it still bent, just finding picco a bit of a pain. Don't think this wee saw would be so good with a bigger chain, so i guess i'll just have to soldier on and get a magnifying glass on a stand so I can see to do it free hand as i don't love the guide. The up side is its so easy to wipe it down and keep it clean after work. I'm quite OCD about clean sharp tools !!
  11. Did 2 cube of dry oak branches today with a charge in between. Very impressed, but picco chain is awful to sharpen ! Files bent in the handle !
  12. Grey and bitter cold wind with squally sleet showers in North Cumbria
  13. Cold, grey sky, drizzling and very windy. Standard Christmas weather in Cumbria !
  14. Minus 4 and clear. Off to work now. Merry Christmas everyone 🎄🎄🎄
  15. Or perhaps he has taken advice and is waiting till a local tree surgeon can fit him in and do a safe dismantle as many have suggested on here.
  16. Camera up now just after the horse has bolted !!
  17. Just had someone "help themselves", (steal), to 5 trailer loads of split dry stacked logs from my yard ! Just climbed the gate and helped themselves the bast**ds, about 5 cube of larch, hope they put it on an open fire and it sparks and burns the house down ! Phoned the police who weren't interested, would have got a better response from the boy scouts!
  18. Rugby reference and a reference to the fact I went grey in my teens !
  19. Had a new lad help me a few weeks ago, brush and shovel were his main work tools ! Get your own ppe then think about a saw. good comfy boots, work trousers, work coat a good helmet and a vizi vest is all you need to start with.
  20. I get quite a lot of oak branches and they won't dry in 2 seasons unless they are split, the bark just seals the water in, its good firewood if you mix it with other stuff. I mix it with mostly soft and sycamore and that works well in my stoves. It keeps the fire lit for a long time.
  21. Round our way there are a few willow plantations on wet crap ground, they get harvested every 3 years or so by a specialist machine that spits out giant hay bale like blocks of willow that goes as a fuel. It seems to grow like weeds and they don't have to replant as the root stool is left behind. Was alway lead to believe that coppice was good for nature, is this mechanised coppicing good too ???
  22. Ordered some files and a file holder, I'll see how i get on, but think your tactic might be the way forward !! I'm very OCD about sharpening and keeping my tools clean. the little 120 is easy peasy to keep clean.
  23. I’ve never sharpened a picco chain, any tips ? Other than make sure I’ve got my glasses on and a good light.
  24. Used the little battery saw today, what a wee cracker! Light as a feather and cut a whole cube of branches on a single charge. I know it is early days but have been very impressed will give more feed back when I’ve done a few more jobs with it.
