We have supplied 4 sets of brakes to hire outfits this year, sometimes with wheel bearings too when the hirer has driven with the handbrake on. Cannot confirm how successful the hire shop has been claiming those costs back.

Generally hiring out kit which you use yourself isn't a good combination. It may seem like a nice little money spinner but if its hired out on a Wednesday and you need it for a job on Thursday, but it comes back beaten up, broken or even just damaged blades then that's a problem. Or if their job over runs and need an additional day or two what happens then? If you're busy on a tree job and you have a machine hired out separately and it doesn't start, feed rollers wont go around, or generally breaks down how can you attend. Folk have a fairly short expectation time in regards to attending a breakdown or swapping the machine out if they are paying for hire. Hire only really works with dedicated hire kit.

Not sure how you could quantify that theory really. So many variables.

No, as with hollow grinding the grinding stone is facing the blade. The curve being created by the roundness of the grinding stone. You can grind TimberWolf blades and we grind plenty of them. We have ground the hollow out before now and flat ground them. Takes a bit longer on the first grind. Some folk reckon hollow ground performs better than a flat grind, personally struggle to see how it makes any noticeable difference, especially as it's the back edge.

We generally fill to the bottom line of the sight gauge. That way, when warm the oil is nicely in the middle.

Our Isuzu D-Max had a software update on it's first service. The first thing a new iPhone does when setting up as a new phone is an update. We are able to check engines and install a software update if there is one on these engines

No, I was just knocking up a quick summary of fault finding on an engine like this.

It is a Briggs diag tool and you need the portal access for the system. We separately have an OBD fault code reader for our vehicles.

Before software updates can be run, the Briggs diag machine needs plugging in to the Briggs portal and the latest versions applied. Otherwise you are updating the engine with old hat software. You have to remember Briggs make and sell thousands, if not millions of engines all around the world which need supporting. The only way they can release updates is via an online portal. It is then up to the dealer to make sure they are operating with the latest software and updating engines in the field accordingly.

It is hard to say without having the machine. On any engine diagnostic you have to work logically, testing items before moving on to the next. For example I don't know from my office what PSI the high pressure pump is on Shauns engine. Therefore I can only guess at his non starting issue. These engines obviously shares the same principles as any 4 stroke EFI engine for diagnosis. Fuel area... Quality of fuel Test high pressure pump for operating pressure. Delivery of low pressure pump to high pressure pump. Spray test fuel injectors into a measured device checking flow pattern / delivery rate. Electrics/ sensors (where fitted) Throttle position sensor. You should usually be able to test 0% through to 100% Cam sensor Crank sensor. Oxygen /02 sensor Continuity test through harness plugs and general tests of wiring harness. Compression test engine, more just to know you have healthy compression.

Some Lumag blades being ground this morning. The bar has magnets to hold the blades in position but the blades wobble when the stone goes by. Hence adding a couple of g clamps. The 25hp or so Kubota diesels are mechanical injection. Just a stop solenoid, alternator and starter motor. Fuel injection has been about since the 70's on production cars. in the grand scheme of things, a 2 cylinder fuel injection engine is about as basic as EFI can be. A good car technician would probably laugh at it's simplicity.

It is important to remember the EFI engine has software updates. Briggs build something like 500 engines per day. They could be sat in their dispatch for a period of time, then shipped across the world, sat in a chipper manufacturers storage and then finally fitted. This process could be 6 months, it could be 18 months. Briggs have software updates (no different to an iPhone) which may solve issues known at HQ. It is important these updates are carried out at dealers premises at PDI when new but also periodically when machines are in for service. Take your newish vehicle back into the main dealer for a service and can almost guarantee there will be a software update carried out. This is why we are setup with the diagnostic kit and can support the engines from a warranty point of view. Yes we have had a few issues with the engines but the fault is usually diagnosed and resolved with minimal downtime. Most cases of issues surrounding the engine can be linked to wrong after care without the EFI diagnostics or EFI service training. Stuart Lee's is a prime example of this. Regarding Shaunpauls troubles, Jase Hutch and myself (Ashley) have been saying on this thread back in June that the engine needs plugging in. If it was plugged in, fault codes checked, ECU updated to the latest software, high pressure fuel pump tested etc etc would we still be talking about it in the second week of September?

The chippermaster is no longer made and like hens teeth second hand. We use a Bernhard Express Dual cylinder mower bottom blade grinder for flat blade grinding. Even an old used one will set you back a few grand. We bought ours 9 years ago from Bernhard which came from a council.

We are exhibiting there. The Bath & West should make for a better show ground over Longleat, especially if the weather isn't great.
