  2. I find my feet sweat loads in goretex lined boots so prefer non lined ones.
  3. Dunno whats is so bad about wind turbines? One problem atm is blades are non recyclable that needs some fixing but supposedly they are gonna do that in future National grid has interconnects with the EU to balance power demand and generation also u can use pump storage systems like Dinorwic Demark has a system that thet must be some share of community ownership of them i think. Wether all the contracts to go to foreign companies is a seperate issue . Smaller turbines are less efficient - the local ones have being upgraded to larger versions on the same site But no reason you can't have both small and big.....
  4. I saw a hedge layer who had made a nice copper overstrike protecter A cheap idea is a bike inner tube

    Clever or not?

Needs a bigger area cleared round the base in the turf imo But if its one of thoose invasive cotonaster sp it can spread all over theres acres of the stuff got out in the wild now.... Natural Resources Wales / Controlling Cotoneaster across North Wales NATURALRESOURCES.WALES Controlling Cotoneaster across North Wales | Rheoli Cotoneaster ledled Gogledd Cymru So not that clever to plant it maybe.....as will seed all over the place
  6. Is the above which looks kind of drastic to me - spur pruning as used in modern commercial orchards ? I try to do the first one "regulated" as I like trees looking more natural. Traditional orchards: maintenance pruning - TIN017 PUBLICATIONS.NATURALENGLAND.ORG.UK This information note provides guidance on the reasons for the routine pruning of fruit trees and advice on the different...
  7. Alot of farmers are actually injured and killed.
  8. The handle I attempted developed a slight curve in both axis of direction which I thought wouldn't matter much as it was only very slight but it turned out it was actually annoyingly noticable (in a bad way) when used. Its seems it needed to be 100% straight on the sideways axis otherwise its not good. 😏
  9. Theese ideals often sound good in the headlines until you think though the whole enviro impact & consequences. That just news reporting the cons goverment enviro policy its not an opinion piece like this by the farmers favourite George which is anti the idea. Why are we feeding crops to our cars when people are starving? | George Monbiot | The Guardian WWW.THEGUARDIAN.COM Modern biofuels are touted as a boon for the climate. But, used on a large scale, they are no more sustainable than whale oil...
  10. Some fancy pricey ones here: Replacement Handles For Sale | Woodsmith WWW.WOODSMITH.CO.UK Nice range of sizes in length a thickness .I thought you needed the grain to follow the handle fairly well if you shape against the grain to much makes it weaker. Broken a few new bought handles and noticed the grain alignment was poor like it this pic: If buying one in a hardware store at least you can look at them and a try choose a better one. But the ones in the local store if I recall correctly looked poor i think for the above issues
  11. What is crap about the bought ones? I tried making some but found it tricky to get ash logs to cleave along grain in a straight line often seems to curve or be wavy. I think a tree from a properly managed ash plantation might have straighter grain. Hickory according to wood database is slighly more elastic which seems to be one of the desired wood properties for impact tool handles. Plenty of 36" hickory ones about for £20 each might be better quality than the cheapest ash ones? Elastic Modulus: 2,160,000 lbf/in2 (14.90 GPa) Shagbark Hickory | The Wood Database (Hardwood) WWW.WOOD-DATABASE.COM Elastic Modulus: 1,785,000 lbf/in2 (12.31 GPa) European Ash | The Wood Database (Hardwood) WWW.WOOD-DATABASE.COM Ash will probably be in short supply soon due to ash die back. Japanese use oak for axe handles but maybe we should be planting some hickory in the UK? 😏 Another tradition species apparently is osage orange for tomahawks
  12. I'd of thought some of that that armoured stuff listed would be going to ukraine now? Nice bucket truck
  13. A few yrs back I think there was some very large auctions that had alot more stuff listed?
  14. I thought they didn't live long? Black Alder in the park of Chatsworth House, Edensor, England, United Kingdom WWW.MONUMENTALTREES.COM
  15. Looks healthly to me many are half brown on the outside as they dont sprout from the old wood once pruned back
  16. Rackham reckons American oak mildew is now preventing natural oak regen within woodland.
  17. I don't' think power washing was a good suggestion as a chance it would remove the render.
  18. All the worktops in the science block in my old school were mahogany shame they all got ripped out and skipped to be replaced with formica.
  19. Reds ate my hornbeams several ft off each tree. Non ring barked but a dozen look like this. Suprisingly it seems to have had little effect on the trees so far with regards to growth.
  20. Free Growth of Oak silviculture event at Crumblands Plantation — Woodland Heritage WWW.WOODLANDHERITAGE.ORG Free Growth of Oak - a sell-out Woodland Heritage event, which included a field visit to the Forest Research long-term... Anyone being here would be interesting to have more details of there management? 13400 tree per hectare really dense is that corrrect? EDIT France do a 240 yr cycle another method is promoting a new 100yrs cycle https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwjalOrImrX8AhUITsAKHXiGBZ4QFnoECBMQAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fjournal.societyofirishforesters.ie%2Findex.php%2Fforestry%2Farticle%2Fdownload%2F10853%2F9907&usg=AOvVaw1E5Dm0sAwI-SouUDv6deOx
