I presume this is not your first attempt at such a creation .. and expect you have sold such things before , therefore you are probably best able to price such an item ...hope you get a good price so as to encourage ( make worthwhile ) you ( and others perhaps ? )to make more !!!! Pricing such work is always difficult... it is easy to say multiply time x hourly rate + materials .costs etc but the "market " may pay more, or the price may be unachievable also marketing can be costly ... however I would of thought somewhere between 500 - 1000 should be possible if not, do not make another one !!! Look on sites like ETSY and NOTHS and E BAY and see things like wooden thrones and driftwood chairs etc to see what others are asking ... Good work though what wood have you used ?

Could it have been the job at "Rock Walk " in Torquay a few years back ...lots of of Monterey Cypresses ?....I am not aware of it being in any magazine though ...

Macrocarpa makes great cleft shingles if you have access to a fair bit of straight clean wood and are good at splitting it !!

but when released the rope slips toward the edge of the cam and could easily slip out. Lovely well machined thing though. There should be a little stiff wire arc on the side to stop it slipping out but some used to remove this to make it easier to get it on the rope .... scary compared to modern times ... Terry

There is a company called Cembrit blunn on Heathfield industrial estate in S Devon ( Newton Abbot ) that supplies them . I can't really comment on quality as I know next to nothing about cedar shingles .....Terry ..

Some recently finished work , for an event and gallery stock , ... various woods some I have never seen turned before and are rarely available ,... Beech burr , Beech, Ginkgo and Griselinia, ...Just to show what can be had from the firewood pile of Arb waste if you know what you are looking for !!! lots still ends up as firewood but none of this was from nice timber butts and some cut on site straight after felling ... Terry ..

Hi - line is based not far from you , they do mostly utility work but plenty of other stuff as well , it is a busy area for tree work ( S Devon ) lots of leylandidlyido hedges as well !! plenty of small companies that have busy spells, staff problems etc just a matter of introducing yourself , and proving your worth , pay rates probably lower than some other areas , but not too bad ..£100 a day should get you work but you will not get rich ... who does in this business ...Lots of nice things to see and do on work free days as well ....

It could well be digestate ( residue from anaerobic digesters ) some farmers are paid to take it but others refuse to use it ...... -
I think they have been considered the biggest / tallest hardwoods for some time now , they are very impressive indeed , they are located near the church near the school , heading in the direction of the town but not really access for public but I am sure you will be OK if discreet ...

In the bottom right hand pic he appears to be using what I think was a device known as a haebler prussicker ( not sure on spelling ) one of the earliest mechanical devices and considered lethal by many but I knew a few guys who climbed with them for years with no ill effects !!..

Most of my climbing career ( now semi retired ) I weighed about 10st and am 5 foot 10 , I have been doing other work part time for about 10 years now including driving a lorry and am now 11 st and a bit , I do a lot of activities that probably help keep me trim for my age ... 53 ... I never considered myself "strong " yet have always been fit ( stamina wise ) and had a good power to weight ratio , and I do not have a bad back or suffer from any other ailments normally expected after nearly 30 years of tree work ( 20 full time ) .. Made something very similar myself some time back with tanalised fencing materials , I keep my kayak on top of it ( saves space ) I see many such things for sale at garden centres etc and they are rarely cheap !!

Arborist to artisan ...... something I have been doing for nearly 20 years now still do a bit of climbing /felling / groundwork and driving lorries but about 30% of my income is now woodcraft , and yes there is loads of wood out there that goes to waste but being in the right place at the right time to get it is the hard part , but I never go short ..selling work is another thing ...another guy I know used to work in forestry for a while and is now one of the worlds leading wood artists ... check out Nick Agar ..turningintoart ( sorry can't do link ) I used to give him wood ! ... It has often crossed my mind as to how long some carvings will last , especially outdoors , I have seen spalted beech carvings sell for several thousand pounds and wonder if the buyer is aware it will rot away within 5-10 years , others I have seen I know will crack badly ( oak ) ...... re the above crocodile .. I would turn it over and scrape and brush as much loose soft wood as possible out ,let it dry , and then generously apply creosote or other such preservative and then brace if required , when replacing the piece ensure it is raised above ground slightly ( on bricks ) to help its longevity

The Oak fair near Sherborne ( zummerzet ) August bank holiday ( I think ) more craft and art related not Arb but very pleasant last year , weather , atmosphere and food ...

Try as much as you can to be ambidextrous , especially when climbing using prussik / blakes hitch .

How should I rough cut lumps for making bowls?

Cherry of that dimension will almost certainly split as it dries , ( years ) if it does dry without splitting then it will be a pretty tough lump of wood to turn compared to doing most of the work when green .. Terry .. -

All my bowls start off like that piece , I then trim as much to shape with a chainsaw , a sort of roundish dome , then attach a faceplate to the flat side then turn the exterior of the bowl , leaving a chucking point ( dovetail ) then turn the interior of the bowl leaving overthick , to allow for ovalisation during drying , after rough turning I coat with PVA glue ( unibond ) then put aside to dry slowly , apiece this size would take a good while , also this is not the best time of the year for doing this ... Yes , I saw this as well and really enjoyed it , however it did not really show the finished chair very well and seemed to skip over the very time consuming part of all the final shaping and sanding ( which would have been quite considerable ) and application of Oil and wax etc to be polished and buffed .Good stuff though !!! Terry...
