  1. I am suddenly not jealous any more !! ( gutted for you really )
  2. Lovely bit of wood , lucky find these days .. hope to see some good work posted in the future !
  3. To be sure of a good quality finish it is best not to rush it , after all the other work that goes in to a piece many people just look at the finish and judge it by that ! Liberon finishing oil is always my first choice and I buff it as soon as I can after application , and repeat once a day for a few days .
  4. I think it only happened a few times and I visited twice and quite enjoyed it , but I am pretty sure it last happened about 10 years ago ? You are right there is not much in the way of wood fairs down this way ... although I think there is often one near Taunton and the Oak fair near Sturminster Newton which is a very good one and I have intentions of going too next year ( as an exhibitor ) I went this year just to visit and was very impressed !
  5. I might finish a few soon , but am mostly just roughing out bowls at the moment , I have obtained a lot of wood recently , and this time of the year is ideal for preparing fresh wood and putting it aside to season , I am also working on a lot of xmas stuff as well and just generally very busy , and as the weather is still good I want days of as well !!
  6. Lovely bowls there Steve , really like the rippling in the Walnut and the ones with a bit of sapwood look great as well .. keep them coming !!
  7. Do not opt for next day delivery ( esp AM ) if you want a cheap deal ... 48hr delivery is a bit cheaper , I have done a lot of work for the FORTEC pallet network , all companies are very competitive !!
  8. he is paying £7 per cubic foot. 200fbm = 16.67 cu ft = £ 116.69 and he wants it delivered 60 miles away at that price. ............................. That is a very poor offer !
  9. I have driven past this site several times a week for years , and they were tall open crown trees , must of been a fun job !! and it is very neatly stacked on site as well .
  10. Very good point ..... however any nice logs I have come across the owner is so convinced it is worth a fortune that they will not sell it, but leave it to degrade /rot !!!
  11. Are there not plenty of industry codes of practice covering this already ?
  12. Nasty looking cut mate , never a clean wound from a chainsaw , hope you heal quick ! It became apparent to me a long time ago that carrying out seemingly low risk activities ( ie a 15 ft tree ) seem to result in more injuries etc than the more potentially dangerous ones ( ie 90 ft tree ) this is probably because we are less " focused " on danger , I have hurt myself a few times ( not serious ) doing such things such as trapping fingers whilst shutting tailgate , breaking thumb in steering wheel whilst off road in non power steering vehicle etc ... but fortunately never cut myself or boots or trousers either .

    Moto GP

Wsbk and Bsbk are on the BBC next year , with Suzi perry and Carl Fogarty ( commentating not racing !) For me Moto gp is dull nowadays only the same few are able to win most of the time , and I do not pay to watch with BT .
  15. No you can't charge double , in fact you have made a costly mistake by logging it up !!
  16. Nice one Gray git ! I am gathering wood when I find what I want for a series of furniture to make this winter of this sort of style , but also coffee tables ,desks , shelves etc ...... Do you manage to sell any / many ? I know in the US this sort of stuff is well regarded and sought after .
  17. You certainly can use a rear handled saw , in fact I have not used a top handled saw for about 15 years now and have no probs whatsoever , persist with it for a while and you might not ever bother with a top handled saw ! They are expensive , crap and encourage unsafe practice and you will need a rear handled saw to finish the job and cut up on the ground anyway ! I have used husky 242 's and stihl ms 260 's mostly .
  18. I was at Merrist wood in 1985 and believe this was the first year that the PPE we now consider standard was compulsory , although helmets were not used whilst climbing . what perplexes me about accidents as above, why the injured party never seems to be deemed to be "at fault " do they not know they need to be trained , wear PPE etc and are to some degree responsible for their own mistakes , do they not read the RA's which they usually sign to demonstrate they have understood ?
  19. I use it for turning and find anything over 18" of no use interest at all ! Once the branch stubs cease to be visible ( occluded over ) it's main feature the knots can be a bit lost but the bits you have there should interest a turner , if you can find one ( and get money out of him !) good luck and thanks for keeping back and offering the wood .
  20. Do you only eat food and drink produced in France, drive a French car etc etc, !! ...................... actually most French do just that !! ................ Also it may well have been kiln dried but it depends how it has been stored since then !
  21. One lady who's garden we were working in pointed to a cedar tree and said "see that branch .. it keeps falling off "... me and my mate were really struggling to contain our laughter !!
  22. Incredible stuff , but I think using some stained glass would be even better !! Is this American as I think I have seen similar of that style .
  23. I can imagine it could take some time and discussion to agree on a volume for that lump !! lol ... Lots of wastage in milling as well I suspect !
  24. Mr Gray git , it appears to me that you have used a tenon cutter to form the joints where the hazel goes in to the oak and other hazel , is this a tapered tenon? and if so is a tapered drill used for the holes in to which they go ? I have recently started doing a bit of green and dry rustic wood work and wondering which would be most suitable for such work ..... by the way I like the chair !!
