    It depends how spalted they are , I do not think there is any real risk to human health ( other wise we would all die after cutting down a dead beech tree !!) but the white parts can be a bit soft and also if the board is often wet from use and washing it could carry on decaying , there are plenty of food safe oils to use, some use cooking oils .

    Yes very graphic !! really sorry to see this and hope you get back to normal soon . It always scares me when I see people using saws with 1 hand but I have never seen it go wrong like this , brave of you and much respect for posting it though as it may well discourage others from doing so in the future , hope you have some one to help you out for a month or so !!

    For purple heart the only place I can suggest is Yandles in Somerset No idea for Scarlet Oak though !

    Add to the above the fact that now hazel spars for thatching are imported , and increasing amounts of firewood are also being imported leaving woodlands unworked , except for the " conservationists " who seem happy to spend money for no economic return .

    I went to the Oak fair at Stock Gaylard in Dorset at the weekend and thought it was excellent !! A fairly large dedicated wood fair and it seemed busy with stalls ,displays and demos of virtually all sorts of wood crafts from the relative crudity ( no offence intended ) of chainsaw carving to some of the very finest furniture / cabinet making I think I have ever seen . It seem well attended by members of the public and stuff seemed to be selling , nice selection of food as well !! I think there is similar stuff at the APF in September which I hope to go to as well

    If you cut any log "through and through" the planks from the widest part of the log are by default quarter sawn and will be the most stable ( least warp prone ) also on species such as the oak above and especially london plane will display there medullary rays and have an increased value . This is only really viable with a decent sized log . Radial cutting can also be done to make the most of a fine log but rarely done i think .

    Did my final one today as well ....... There were 3 local HGV technicians from a local garage who only repair vehicles but collect and deliver vehicles from local companies and take to their own premises and to testing stations for MOT etc and it seems they have to do it so not sure why some of the above posters think it is not necessary , as I am sure they would not be doing it otherwise .

    Thanks for the offer and I live not far from Ashburton , but I would prefer / need to look at the wood and select the bits that would suit me , I make mostly hollow vessels similar to the link you posted , these take quite a while to make and wood selection is of great importance, it is difficult to describe exactly what I look for I just "know " when I see it ! What dia is the wood ?

    Well thought of, as not many would consider it for turning or craft work , I some times use it, but as ever you are too far away from me ! Not sure I would buy tons of it though but would pay more than that pro- rata for the bits I wanted . Thanks for posting it anyway .....

    A typical load of hardwood logs will last longer and provide more heat than the same volume of softwood .... however softwood might be cheaper but by how much ? Does it cost much less to fell , extract transport and process and deliver to make it the same / similar value ? Eucalyptus is a fast growing hard wood that burns well , and remember seeing trials with Nothofagus but not sure what conclusions were .

    They look real good mate well done ! How big are they as I get no sense of scale from the pics ? How have you hollowed them out ? you say with a saw, a chainsaw ? but the finish looks far too good for that !!

    There are mountaineering tents for big wall climbs which are sort of suspended hammocks with built in canopies , very specialised and expensive .

    Unfortunately the example given above of some one cutting themselves does have an impact on every one , as it will add to accident statistics and further H&S , PPE training , insurance etc will probably be imposed on people who do not require it and those that do will still not bother ! As for quality of work I am afraid a great deal of people do not know or care that much as long as nothing is damaged / broken and the site is tidied up well and it is cheap , To be honest though you do not usually see these sorts doing any difficult tree work , usually garden type stuff . Rules and regs are a bit pointless really unless they are enforced but it has always been that way but then others seem to get caught out on the most petty thing . It only really matters when things go seriously wrong which thankfully I think is pretty rare !.

    Its Monterey pine , the dark circle is a dead section from where it was " topped " some time ago and the smaller knots were a whorl of branches just below which resulted in a bushy multi stemmed top which was then topped again some years later ( I suspect it was spoiling some ones sea view ) all of these then occluded / sealed over completely leaving a bulbous lump , at the top of the trunk . In the pic you are effectively looking up from the inside of the tree . It was OK to turn but not easy to get a good finish on due to resin in the "dead " bit .

    Just finished a few more bowls and am not 100% sure what wood this is , I think it is Judas tree but have never cut this before and found this in some ones wood pile , it is NOT laburnum or sumac but can see similarities . The big knotty one ( 15" dia ) is a wood i know but is rarely turned and an unusual piece and was wondering if any one can guess what it is , and finally a close up of spalted griselinia which is very nice and also unusual .

    Box is "potentially " very valuable , making the right contact is the most important thing , it would be worth your while doing a fair bit of research on this . Take care not to let it dry/ crack . even small bits are worth something .

    Been busy recently having to supply retail outlets and galleries with work ( selling well as it is tourist season here ) bowls and hollow forms as well using woods most of you will be familiar with and some less so , many made with " faulty " wood that most turners / crafters would not be interested in but there is just so much great material in arb waste ...

    Are you sure that they do not mean the logs have gone a bit mouldy ? this will happen even if quite dry but have restricted air flow , I have seen this in dumpy bags of kiln dried wood , just spread them out in the sun for a day or so .

    I get the impression that NO road regulations apply to the agricultural industry !! lol ... Are you sure ag tractors cannot exceed 20 mph ? I have been overtaken by them before ! also they do not seem to hold up traffic so much nowadays as they are so fast , typically 30- 35 mph

    Doing my final cpc soon and have found it an insultingly pathetic waste of time and money but unfortunately it has do be done ( wish UKIP had some say on this nonsense ) however today I have learned that the speed limit for lorries on unrestricted single carriageways is to be RAISED ! from the current 40 - 50 mph , no idea there has been any campaign on this issue and it seems all interested parties , including road safety campaigners think it is a good idea !

    Visit National Trust gardens and garden centres / nurseries etc the trees and shrubs are often labelled there !.

    I find Sycamore a good wood but not that desirable , however it is usually easily, and cheaply sourced close to home , I am in Devon and allergic to VAT !!
