  1. Fortunately it has warped in a pleasing way and not split ! Nice big bowl , did you intend from the outset this would be end result ? Good price for a bowl , well done !!
  2. Tesco are still doing very well indeed , just as many people shop there as ever it is just the PROFIT margin is reduced which means in real terms that customers are getting better value for money doesn't it ? This has been bought about by competition but that is the same in all industries . Personally I would prefer to support Tesco's as they are BRITISH !!
  3. There was / is a place on Polkyth Rd St Austell CIS weathergear that did have some ropes , boots , safety gear etc Have not been past it for a while though . I would imagine the lack of supply shops is due to internet shopping as happens in so many cases !!
  4. I loved them because they embody the very thing many of us admire about ancient trees , all the gnarly , crooked and burred and decayed lumps but they are also not finely finished (sanded and polished ) and are neither life forms such as bears and eagles or human , or abstract ... just natural ( ugly ) beauty .... I also thought is that a store of stock ... unsold or drying ...either way it represents a huge amount of work !
  5. I am surprised and a bit disappointed if Doug Bennets has closed down as I have bought a fair bit there over the years and have found them good to deal with ..... can anyone confirm they have closed ?
  6. I thought the badger under the tree was the best of all , I loved the texturing of the "tree" especially , but they were all pretty darn good though ! not sure I would like to use a saw like that for too long though , the noise , dust and vibes would drive me mad !!
  7. Not sure how to do a link but look up ..Peter Wagensonner skulpturen und objekte aus holz ... on you tube ... some amazing stuff but I am baffled how he has made so much ! as it must be very time consuming and there is loads of it .
  8. I did not manage to find the Arbtalk tent unfortunately ! Was later than expected arriving ... the last mile took over an hour !! not happy !! ( friday ) bumped in to a few people I knew and had a good look around , loved the chainsaw carvings , was really impressed by the 81 year old pole climber ! Plenty of incredible machines on show and lots of bright coloured gear for sale ,really enjoyed the show overall , dreadfully over priced food and drink, Shame about the weather , and the journey home to Devon was dreadful , huge tailbacks and jams around Bristol which added an hour and a half to my time so was pretty p'd off by the time I got home , sorry to have missed the meet up would liked to have met some of you guys ..... Terry..
  9. I agree with TTP above really ..... It is probably best to always have an up front agreement .... also it seems bloody mean of a head teacher , who almost certainly as a very good salary and very generous pension etc, etc ... do deny a poor wood cutter any recompense for his efforts !! Perhaps raise this in a subtle sarcastic way at the next PTA
  10. Good to see what others get up to in their sheds ! Gray git ... bit of a coincidence we both made 1 armed chairs .. same arm as well !! I really like the style and proportions of your chair , I have seen work like this on US websites and books and they are very desirable/ costly , I have just bought a tenon cutter for future projects and have a nice source of Ash sticks and will be getting in to it, if this summer ever ends ( too nice to be working !) I find it very time consuming work but enjoyable with minimal tools required and relatively quiet as few power tools are required not too dusty either ... do you sell any ?
  11. In the early days of protective trousers (80's ) it was quite common to melt the outer layer on hot saw exhausts , especially stihl 020's ( if they ran long enough to get hot !!) and rips were common, however the horrid nylon exterior was difficult to repair , so on a few pairs I removed the inner mesh and stitched them in to combat trousers which seemed to work well , this would of been better if done professionally , some one offering a specialised repair service would seem a good idea though as it is only really the exterior that wears out/ gets damaged and the clogging mesh remains perfectly effective . Just to add I worked full time for 20 + years and never cut a pair !! ( did not wear them in summer for many years though )
  12. I will almost certainly be there for a day not sure which one yet though !
  13. A little stool I made a while ago for my own use , top is 2 oak off cuts and legs are bone oak .. which I have always thought has great potential for making rustic work . The chair is driftwood collected locally on kayaking trips with a few close ups of details . I am partly through another project using Ash sticks for a refined rustic style furniture and will post pics when complete
  14. 3" long ? wide ? or thick ? only joking !! but what size / quantity...I am going to be in a few yards next week and often find lumps seasoned for firewood laying around , but finding anything long , and not split or too knotty might not be easy , could maybe cut a rough beam with chainsaw saw if necessary , what do you intend to do with it ? Bear in mind that 2 cubic feet weighs about a ton !! ( not really, but bloody heavy though ! )
  15. Oops ! forgot to say ... great piece of furniture there Woodworks .. not your first or last I suspect ... It must perplex many people , my self included as to why some one with such skills and tools to make such fine things also spends his time smashing trees in to bits for firewood !! ( no disrespect to those that do ) .. Is it not possible to work full time making furniture ? or just not yet ?..
  16. Re ; rainbow poplar .... about 10 years ago I took down a large ( 5-6 foot dia ) poplar that was beautifully coloured and figured and after many enquiries to potential buyers there was no interest at all and it was taken to a yard to be logged in to firewood eventually, but just got left to rot .. shame really but so often the way !
  17. It will make the cullers job easier I suppose ( te he !)
  18. I delivered some goods to a hotel a while back in a lorry , one corner of the car park was taped off , I needed the space to turn around and asked why it was taped off , a woman told me it was because there were bee's over there , to which I replied looking at the tape ... " won't they just fly over that ?" ..the look on her face was priceless !!!
  19. Do not think just because it is not a large board it is not desirable , that bulbous shaped piece in the last pic is very interesting , and there is much usable wood in the rest as well , if you take a look at a great deal of craft work you will see that it is rare for a single large piece of wood to be used . In fact the small unusual pieces command a better price to volume ratio than big clean boards , it just a bit harder to find a purchaser . Look at things like jewellery boxes , small shelves , coat racks, small coffee tables etc.. etc . It is from the Arb industry that most of this sort of wood arises and not from plantation grown stuff, but it was probably a lot of hard work milling that though !!
  20. Because you have sanded and applied a finish to the bowl, this protects it from oxidisation and UV light ( unlike the shavings ) in the long term the bowl will become dull brown , nearly all wood does ( on the surface ) look at a Yew antique !. The same happens with most cut wood in both dry and green form , although fresh cut , wet /damp wood can also be discoloured by fungal activity, this is noticeable on fresh pruning wounds or felled stumps . Dry seasoned wood is dull on the surface but plane or sand it and see the difference !!
  21. It depends how spalted they are , I do not think there is any real risk to human health ( other wise we would all die after cutting down a dead beech tree !!) but the white parts can be a bit soft and also if the board is often wet from use and washing it could carry on decaying , there are plenty of food safe oils to use, some use cooking oils .
  22. Yes very graphic !! really sorry to see this and hope you get back to normal soon . It always scares me when I see people using saws with 1 hand but I have never seen it go wrong like this , brave of you and much respect for posting it though as it may well discourage others from doing so in the future , hope you have some one to help you out for a month or so !!
