I use it for turning and it is one of my favourite woods , however I do not think it would be much use for furniture as it is not hard enough and will dent / mark easily but may suit some crafts .... a few examples ....

A hollow vessel / pod ... about 300 mm tall made from Oak and turned very thin 3-4 mm and intentionally allowed to warp distort for a very organic effect / style

Fascinating stuff ! Conjures up endless possibilities . I spoke to a chair maker in Dorset who has been growing some Ash saplings around formers he made for certain parts , also seen a load of sculptured trees / shrubs on t'internet in Australia along similar lines . Although Willow is quick growing and easy to work I think Ash or Hazel would be better . I am working on some stick type furniture at the moment , mostly Ash .

Any old farm or industrial contraption with cast legs or stands like this are well sought after at auctions nowadays for this sort of project and they always seem to look good , this one included , well done ! Terry -
Yes plenty of time to eat fried food and read porn mags ha ha , in reality waiting to be loaded / unloaded .. How many hours do you spend actually climbing in a day ??

Ben Edmonds ..... a lorry driver might make 25k per annum but that will be for 55-60 hour weeks and stupid o clock start times !!

A couple of hollow vessels recently completed from Yew , one is a commission for a customer , both about 300 mm tall ( not including finials ) and pierced .

It is like it in all trades these days I think , during recession no one trained anyone / got rid of staff etc now things are busy where do you get ( good ) staff .... any Romanian Arbs ? ... I do some lorry driving through an agency who are always wanting me to work , and recently on nearly all industrial estates I visit I see banners outside premises ... STAFF WANTED... the companies I work for ask if I want a full time job .. NO .. make the most of it, as who knows what might happen after the election !!

Lovely looking bit of work there Ian , I especially like the use of " butterfly ties " across the cracks , I use them myself sometimes but always make them black . I am planning a few tables like this myself in summer , I have all the wood ,just waiting till it is all dry enough to size, assemble and finish . Terry ... -
Pan , glad you liked them , I personally have found the "coloured " ( mostly scorched with a blowlamp ) bowls have sold well , I had a few large Ash bowls roughed out for some time and a few I finished normallybut they were slow to sell , so experimented a bit and came up with the finish you can see , I have now roughed out about another dozen or so 15-18 inch bowls for the same purpose over the winter and they are now drying nicely the first should be ready in summer ... The spalting in the Ash was not really very soft at all so no probs .. .Terry ..

Dan , it looks like you are on a steep learning curve !! ha ha ...We have all been there and to be honest I really enjoyed the struggle and each achievment seemed so rewarding I could not wait to get back at it , watch out when you try to use the skew chisel , I have had one for about 20 years and it is hardly worn . Perhaps you could get some assistance / advice from a local turner , it speeds up the learning process greatly , keep your early attempts to judge your progress by . If you are in the Arb industry you will have access to so much free / cheap wood then just practice ..a lot ... Terry..

I have recently finished a few pieces using the same wood / finish .... a hollow form with a matching bowl , not sure why really !! Ash that has been coloured and scorched , and Ash that is nicely spalted .... The hollow vessels are about 12" tall and the scorched / coloured bowl 17" dia and 5" deep and the spalted bowl about 12" dia and 5" deep ....all of this was from an Arb waste / firewood pile ...Terry

Slackbladder , if you know anyone local ( a mate ? ) who is very competent / experienced / qualified it could be worth your while asking them to observe you going about your tasks and point out what may or may not be wrong , and / or observe what they do , or work with them for a little while , a sort of informal assessment without any certificate ( as not required .)

A while back in Devon a guy got fined for cutting grass on a playing field / park with a tractor ,using red diesel he did it voluntarily for years so no hire /reward , I would of thought this was horticulture but it seems this was not the case .

That is not woodcraft ................it is fine art !! Most of us, in light of recent events in Ukraine would not consider it the sort of place that would produce someone that can make stuff like this , Their loss Irelands gain , I wish him well !!! Terry...

Thanks for the comments guys , Not every person will like every thing , that is why it is good to make a wide range of things , It does not bother me if 7 devil is not a fan of the lids and am sure he was just offering his opinion rather than a criticism , and things can come across differently when written than when spoken . I often just like to explore what I can make with all the various woods readily available as Arb waste before it gets burnt !! I have made some things in the past which I do not like that much myself but someone has bought them , other times something I really like does not sell , and some pieces I like so much I keep !! Terry .....
