  1. Thanks Mr Punk. Yes, if you get a chance to take a pic after the holidays that would be great. Cheers.
  2. I think it's winter in NZ though? Supposed to be summer here! Cold and wet.
  3. Nice bench! Any chance of a picture of the underside? Just curious how you braced it / fixed it all together... Thanks.
  4. Hi Steve I get what you're saying, but I was talking more about reabsorbing water until it's as moist as air dried wood. I imagine kiln dried would take longer to equilibrate with atmospheric moisture than air dried, but they'd both get to roughly the same state in time? Interesting to see that it is quite slow to reabsorb though.
  5. Sounds good. Any pictures? Out of interest, what chainsaw course did you do? Lantra? I was looking for some sort of basic chainsaw training without paying CS30/31 prices as I will never use it commercially.
  6. As a firewood user, I wouldn't buy kiln dried, personally. My local supplier offers kiln dried ash or air dried birch. The birch is cheaper, better for the environment and burns beautifully. Plus if I sit my lovely kiln dried logs outside (even under cover) for a few weeks over winter, will they not fairly swiftly re-absorb atmospheric water until they're the same MC as air dried logs in the same situation?
  7. Any update, Goaty? Couldn't plant much this year due to wedding and other commitments, but I've got a nice crop of rocket, and some pepper seedlings from a friend. I fear the latter are a bit too small to grow much to harvestable size this year.
  8. Any update here, TA? Would be good to hear more, if anything has happened apart from growth!
  9. Nicely done. Are the joints just mortice and tenon?
  10. Because I didn't know it was possible to get auto ignition systems for a standard wood burner! Do you have to run electrical wires into the log burner, or how do they work? Thank you, useful to know they exist...
  11. Agreed. Lovely grain.
  12. Deer poo?!
  13. Shame shame. I'd prefer the simplicity of just throwing logs into a wood burner and not have to deal with RHI, pellet suppliers etc. But would also like the ability to program a timer and come back to a warm house!
  14. Ahh, what a classic. And well done that man!
  15. You could wrap the IBCs in something thick and black? Easier than burying them.
  16. Interesting this. I've got three different wood drying areas at my house. 1) A greenhouse, with windows and door all open. 2) A stack under an overhanging roof on a pallet 3) Just a stack out in the open on pallets. I put similar sized samples of any wood I get into each location. My unscientific research shows that the wood out in the open dries fastest (less heavy, goes greyer, cracks start to show in the end grain). The wood in the greenhouse (temperatures of 45C+ in the sun and humidity of 20% odd vs 23C / 50% humidity odd outside) doesn't seem to dry as fast. I can only assume that even though the windows and door to the GH are open, it still doesn't get as much air movement. So this would suggest that air movement is more important than temperature and humidity? (As I say, non scientific - but I see the same pattern with all wood types I've tried this with). Having said that, it is of course summer, so I imagine when the sun is less strong and there is more wind, wood in the greenhouse might dry more quickly?
  17. True. And my oil reservoir level gauge thing doesn't seem to work - always shows empty, even when oil is spilling out of the filler cap!
  18. Took me a while to get used to the chain stopping immediately I took my finger off the trigger! With my petrol saw I'm used to using the last of the chain spindown to finish a cut.
  19. I've got one of these: Titan TTB355CHN 40.5cm 2000W Electric Chainsaw 230V | Electric | Screwfix.com They have a good reputation / good reviews, and it's done fine for me so far - surprisingly quick and powerful. (A few uses to chop up logs). I only paid £49.99 for mine - they had an offer on and I couldn't resist - but now it's still only £75. Only 1 bolt holding the bar to the body though, could be a weak point in future?
  20. Spam?
  21. I may never go in the woods again! "If you go down to the woods today, you're sure of a big surprise..."!
