  1. Sounds good Stereo. Which Clarke splitter is that? Oh, and I use a Fiskars - I'll get a log splitter one day...
  2. Counts for me! Get some pics up. I love a good wooden boat...
  3. Hi Lucan. Would you mind PM-ing me the pdf download link too? Many thanks.
  4. Never won a single penny. Spent £60 or so perhaps. I only buy lucky dips - perhaps someone above was right when he said they're fixed to be unlikely numbers! Then again, the way I think of it, I'd never choose the numbers 1,2,3,4,5,6 - cos clearly that's never going to come up. But the chances of those 6 sequential numbers coming up are the same as any other 6 numbers coming up! I.e. there's so little chance of winning!
  5. I find the opposite! Got an old house with thick walls, and an old Villager stove in the living room. Living room is like an oven, but the rest of the house stays fairly cold. I think there's a draft blowing into the living room (front door near by) so air moves into the living room rather than out of it. Did try a fan, but it still didn't spread much heat out of the living room.
  6. What sort of prices, and where are you?

    Ivy

Hmm. Mine was dead after 6 months or so! Maybe they can get enough nutrients from brick? You could try cutting a couple of stems then putting the cut stems into a pot of glyphosphate or similar - then it should take the weedkiller up into the whole plant and have more effect...
  8. Specific episode here: George Clarke's Amazing Spaces - Channel 4
  9. Thanks Mark, that's useful. I was wondering about the coats of hiring in a mill for the day vs buying one. Depends how much wood you have I suppose!

    Ivy

If you've cut all the ground stems to the ivy it will eventually die back. Can take a while, but it should get there in the end. (The little rootlets higher up can keep it going for a while, but won't provide enough nutrients in the end - on trees anyway. I'd guess it would be the same on brick?).
  11. Yep - once or twice a year on my Villager, generally when the ash starts to spill out when I open the doors!
  12. These were on offer for £250 each until recently! Ash Hardwood Coffee Table Log Pedestal Sofa Table Stunning Feature Decorative | eBay
  13. My understanding was that only coal / coke fires need draft from the bottom? Wood needs a draft from the top. It might take a burn or two after emptying the ash to build up a bit of ash on the grate again, but it will still burn well and hot. Mine is multi fuel, but I only burn wood - and I only empty the ash out once or twice a year.
  14. Some fair points, and I didn't read all the small print on the website. But surely any initiative to increase the appreciation / protection / care of special trees, or even to bring them to the public's attention is a good thing? I'd go and visit special trees if I knew where to find them. And yes, I probably could find them without using such a register, but a register should make it easier for me.
  15. What's the air cycle system? Not heard of that?
  16. Hi all Not sure if this has been posted already, but the Woodland Trust are pushing for a register to list and hopefully secure the future of the UK's Trees of Special Interest. (Veterans, historical significance, size etc.) Seems like a good idea to me. Support a register in England | Celebrate and protect the UK's Very Important Trees | Campaigns | Campaigning | The Woodland Trust This link is for the England section, but Scotland, Wales and NI links can be accessed from the same page. Cheers.
  17. Fair play. Sometimes I find myself chasing companies / people for small amounts of money - where the principle is worth more than the time / money involved. I just don't like them to get away with it - maybe they'll think twice next time... Or maybe I'm just a petty bastard!
  18. If I'd paid money for something to be done and it hadn't been done right, I'd be back on to them to sort it out free of charge, or / and refund. Of course, it might not be worth the hassle... Good luck.
  19. Nice work - good to get something usable and long lasting from the wood (rather than just firewood). Can I ask roughly what all the kit cost, and how long it took? Cheers.
  20. Pyracantha grows well - almost too well. I have one that I ritually hack back each year or so, and by the next year it's 6 foot high and attacking me as I walk past again! More of a spindly bush than a hedge, but that's probably because it's a single plant and I don't prune it into a hedge shape at all. Spiky bastard though, and quite pretty flowers and berries.
  21. Ahh, right - I thought the racks were against the fence at the back. Nice, tidy job - makes my racks look like half arsed attempts made from tables and pallets... Which they are!
  22. It has gutters - full size ones. They just don't seem to have a steep enough drop, so tend to drip slightly. And the prevailing wind blows the drips onto my logs!
  23. I'd be interested to know how much difference the rain covers make to drying speed? The reason that I ask is that one of my log piles is under a shed roof in a very windy location, but it seems that the drips from the roof onto the bottom edge of the stack keep the wood fairly moist despite the strong wind and protection from vertically falling rain... I.e. is it better to be windy and wet or dry but not windy?
