  1. Hi all I picked this up for firewood last night. The owner said it was an "Alagnis", but a bit of googling doesn't find anything even similar. It was a multi stemmed tree / bush, about 4m tall and similarly wide (I guess - I only saw it chopped down). It was spiky, and growing in a back garden if that makes any difference! Any thoughts? Thank you.
  2. Beautiful bench. Love the solid style. How long did that take?
  3. Treefest at Westonbirt is a good one (August I think), and not too far from you.
  4. Good to see, thanks. That's one hell of a bandsaw!
  5. I do it in a very basic way. Two big water butts off the shed roof, and a couple of buckets off the greenhouse. Did consider hooking it up to the house, but that's a fair bit more work and money and regulations. Plus the amount I get is about right to water the garden and top up the pond every so often. More water storage would be good (lots wasted in the wet spells, and not enough for the long dry spells really), but that's a project for another house I think. Did look at a house that had no mains water at all, but a 5000 litre rainwater collection tank!
  6. Shiny, looks good. I'm also jealous of your smallholding!
  7. As I recollect, plum trees (prunus sp) shouldn't be pruned in winter due to silver leaf disease?
  8. Town green status is worth a go. It saved a patch of land near me from a massive and unsuitable development when many other avenues had failed.
  9. I like Collins complete guide to British trees. Don't have many books to compare it to though to be fair!
  10. Nice stove. Did you buy that, or make it yourself? A wood fired sauna is on my list to build one day...
  11. Hmm. Potentially interesting - please let us know how it goes? Do you have to buy pellets from them, or can you use any (RHI certified) supplier? Just wondering if they're going to trap you and increase the charges somehow...
  12. Seems too good to be true! What's the catch? Does the installer take most of the RHI payments or something?
  13. Where are you based, homegrown?
  14. I cut all the main (ground) stems to ivy on an apple tree. Took a good 6 months for the crown ivy to die, but it did in the end. (Though I read somewhere that in mortar the smaller roots can get enough nutrients to survive still...)
  15. Ha! Like the pattern on that.
  16. Sad news, an excellent author - extremely readable books.
  17. That's an interesting looking thing! Does it really do all the jobs fairly well? What are its limitations? Size of workpiece?
  18. Thanks chaps. 80cm seems like it would be more useful in my situation.
  19. What length do people favour? (Oooh er!) I only do small scale log production, so don't have a log deck or any waist height working platform, or a processor of any sort to pull logs along. I assume an 80cm pick would be more useful than a 38cm pick?
  20. Is the minimum order a whole shipping container?
  21. Ha, wrong Kevin I think! It's actually Kevin Macleod, Royalty Free Music. Also, not sure if it's still completely free, there seem to be some payment options now.
  22. Just to update - I found a bit of scrap plywood, drilled some big holes in it so I could put pegs through it into the holes into my work bench, and bolted and glued a couple of hefty bits of wood to one side with an inch gap between them. (Deep but not thick so I don't lose too much bar length). Works well. Doesn't store too easily, but that's not the end of the world. I also put a bit of scrap wood on the bit where the log rests so that the ply doesn't get eaten away if I get a bit enthusiastic with a cut!
  23. As I remember, Kevin McCloud of Grand Designs offers some music for free use on videos?
  24. Sounds good! Any pictures, as Spandit said?
  25. Firefly - excellent series, and the film (Serenity) is good too. Laughs, fighting, emotional bits, space, guns, prostitutes... It has everything!
