  1. That's rather good. Sad state of our times, but good.
  2. Or there's plenty about the man from Nantucket!
  3. There once was a man named McGruder, Who canoed with a girl in Bermuda. But the girl thought it crude, To be wooed in the nude, So McGru took an oar and subduder. Or: There once was a woman named Jill Tried a dynamite stick for a thrill They found her vagina in North Carolina And bits of her tits in Brazil!
  4. Hi woodyguy. Just wondering why you say hazel coppice is not suitable for firewood? Size? I've burnt some hazel offcuts from hedgelaying, and they were great - dried quickly, burnt well...
  5. Normal for Norfolk?! (I used to live there!)
  6. Yes, I took the pic today, and yes, as far as I can tell it is Garrya. Certainly looks the same, and not as hornbeam like as actual hornbeam!
  7. Hyacinths in flower in my garden. That was before the recent cold & ice snap though, hope they're OK...
  8. That looks more like Norfolk than Kent!!
  9. Good man, cheers Shane!
  10. Ah hah! That looks like the badger. Silk tassel bush, suits it. Thanks Paul.
  11. Hi all I was thinking this could be hornbeam, but the catkins are a bit long, and the leaves are perhaps not veiny (or beechlike) enough. Any ideas? Thanks.
  12. Do people think the EU would survive Greece leaving? I thought one of the tenets of the EU was that a country leaving was not an option? I preferred Greece when it had the drachma! And France with the franc...
  13. I love my woodburner and would (and will) definitely get more in the future. However, I wouldn't want to rely on wood solely - nice to have gas (or oil or whatever) central heating as a backup.
  14. Impressive! Don't think I'd be casually stepping over the spinning shafts in baggy overalls though!
  15. Good face! What's it finished in?
  16. It's OK, I've ordered one from him too! Good to hear they're good quality.
  17. Ahh, right. Yes, that seems a better price for a shed install! Plenty of wind for it tonight.
  18. I was talking about the ampair 600 you linked earlier, not a generator. I'm guessing that that would cost a couple of thousand?
  19. I'm guessing one of those turbines would cost a fair bit? Do look quite useful though...
  20. What's the calorific content of a dead mouse?! Better weight for weight than softwood / hardwood?!
  21. Mine weren't treated - plain wood. (Possibly pressure treated) I wouldn't burn treated wood. And unfortunately, I don't work with trees!
  22. I've burned a few. I was told to be careful as they contain high levels of tars - possibly due to the pressure treatment? Seemed fine to me though, and chimney was no dirtier than usual. (I did mix them with other wood, not just roof timbers - also mine were a good age).
  23. Can't help you specifically - but at a much smaller scale I messed around with solar powered Christmas lights. I concluded that you don't get much power from a single solar panel, especially in winter. (E.g. a day's weak winter sun would get 15 minutes or so of light from a 3m string of LED bulbs - from a 10cm square ish solar panel). The same panel in full sun in summer would give an hour or two of light. So I imagine you'll need a good area of (more modern) solar panels and a hefty battery. And maybe to top the battery up from the mains every so often? This chap set up a more serious solar panel install for his house - might help you with panel area, wattage, amp hours etc.: Peplers In Rye: Eco-refurbishment - installing off-grid solar PV (part 2)
