  1. Some fair points, and I didn't read all the small print on the website. But surely any initiative to increase the appreciation / protection / care of special trees, or even to bring them to the public's attention is a good thing? I'd go and visit special trees if I knew where to find them. And yes, I probably could find them without using such a register, but a register should make it easier for me.
  2. What's the air cycle system? Not heard of that?
  3. Hi all Not sure if this has been posted already, but the Woodland Trust are pushing for a register to list and hopefully secure the future of the UK's Trees of Special Interest. (Veterans, historical significance, size etc.) Seems like a good idea to me. Support a register in England | Celebrate and protect the UK's Very Important Trees | Campaigns | Campaigning | The Woodland Trust This link is for the England section, but Scotland, Wales and NI links can be accessed from the same page. Cheers.
  4. Fair play. Sometimes I find myself chasing companies / people for small amounts of money - where the principle is worth more than the time / money involved. I just don't like them to get away with it - maybe they'll think twice next time... Or maybe I'm just a petty bastard!
  5. If I'd paid money for something to be done and it hadn't been done right, I'd be back on to them to sort it out free of charge, or / and refund. Of course, it might not be worth the hassle... Good luck.
  6. Nice work - good to get something usable and long lasting from the wood (rather than just firewood). Can I ask roughly what all the kit cost, and how long it took? Cheers.
  7. Pyracantha grows well - almost too well. I have one that I ritually hack back each year or so, and by the next year it's 6 foot high and attacking me as I walk past again! More of a spindly bush than a hedge, but that's probably because it's a single plant and I don't prune it into a hedge shape at all. Spiky bastard though, and quite pretty flowers and berries.
  8. Get back to your installer?
  9. Ahh, right - I thought the racks were against the fence at the back. Nice, tidy job - makes my racks look like half arsed attempts made from tables and pallets... Which they are!
  10. It has gutters - full size ones. They just don't seem to have a steep enough drop, so tend to drip slightly. And the prevailing wind blows the drips onto my logs!
  11. I'd be interested to know how much difference the rain covers make to drying speed? The reason that I ask is that one of my log piles is under a shed roof in a very windy location, but it seems that the drips from the roof onto the bottom edge of the stack keep the wood fairly moist despite the strong wind and protection from vertically falling rain... I.e. is it better to be windy and wet or dry but not windy?
  12. I have the exact same box - same colour and everything. Timeless style! I bring in a few loads, then stack the logs in the chimney alcove around the burner. (I don't leave it in overnight)/
  13. True! Dead standing before I felled it, I should say!
  14. A mixture. Some old conifer, dead walnut, some holly (hopefully dry - it's in small pieces), a few bits of sycamore and some unidentified stuff I found in the log store! Possibly cherry come to think of it. Don't think I've got enough for this year, especially as some bits of the holly are still a bit moist inside.
  15. Osmo oils (e.g poly x) have a good reputation.Never used them myself though...
  16. I'd mix it with a bit of something else if you can - ideally something a bit slower burning. I burn plenty of conifer mixed with other bits and pieces, and have my chimney swept once a year - no problems so far. If you're just feeding the stove small bits of pine you'll need to feed it a lot as it will get through it fast.
  17. NACS appears to be the regulatory body. Turns out my sweep isn't listed there! Nor at the Guild Of Master Chimney Sweeps! Though they also state that "Sweeps within the UK are still not legally obliged to pursue any training or gain any qualifications in order to trade. However, for a chimney sweep to become a member of the Guild they must meet and adhere to strict criteria while also achieving the highest minimum standards in the industry."
  18. Set up a small company as a chimney sweep, and contract yourself to sweep your own chimney?! Probably not worth it, and not so simple either. What counts as a "qualified" sweep?
  19. True. I get a receipt rather than an actual certificate. I suppose there's a bit more to it than just poking a brush up a chimney, but I could get a decent set of rods and brushes for the cost of one or two sweeping visits...
  20. Had mine swept a week or two ago. Might just buy a brush next time!
  21. Only just seen that, thanks. Better plant some trees!
  22. Lashing it down in Bristol. Staying at home is not an option, so off to my computer desk I go Better than being outside I suppose though.
  23. What he said! Seen plenty of companies mentioned on here for good service, I just think you can't name and shame... Cheers.
  24. True. But I'd like to go there anyway, one day.
  25. Thanks Ben. I managed to convert the prices, but wasn't totally sure what the prices were actually for!
