  1. I like to have a few smaller logs in the load when I buy them. Useful for getting the fire going, and feeding the smaller stove...
  2. What kit do you use? I've made cider before, but never wine or beer...
  3. I cut my bracken (head high in parts!) with a topper and strimmer in August this year, and have had only a few small fronds growing back. i'll cut again next year, maybe even another cut later this year (if it ever stops raining) but I was surprised how little came back after a single cut.
  4. Interesting, thanks.
  5. Nope? That's what they told me about the engine, and it doesn't look like a typical Chinese 2 stroke. And they make gas struts and things in Derby. Probably not their strimmers come to think of it.
  6. I've got their 52cc strimmer, as it was only a little more expensive than getting my old non-running Stihl looked at! It's good, for the money can't fault it (though I only use it for private use, probably a couple of hours so far). It is heavy though - but OK with the harness. A bit thirsty too, but the blade (straight not mulching) chops through everything I've asked it to (grass, brambles, bracken, scrub...). The strimmer line head is a pain to refill, so I gave up and just use the blade. Never phoned them, but they're quite responsive via email. I asked about the engines and if they were Loncin or similar, and apparently they make their own. I think the whole thing is UK made, or at least UK assembled, and they keep spare parts in stock. I have their trolley jack too, and that's done a good job so far.
  7. Live walnut trees release a herbicide called juglone to reduce competition. Don't know if that would persist in bark etc. though?
  8. Trying to avoid putting the heating on until October! Not likely to make it...
  9. Another vote for yanmar! Only 18hp here but punches above its weight and sips diesel...
  10. Interesting, thanks. I wonder what the salt water is for - to dry the shoes out by osmosis, after the oil dipping?
  11. Used to cycle through that lot on my way to work, up until last year. Looks better now than it did then.
  12. John Lewis-S is a good countryside writer, I like his work. The running hare is on my list but not got round to it yet. (He also wrote some books about soldiers in the World Wars if I remember right - not read them, but I'd expect them to be interesting)
  13. I have an ancient Porsche 944. 1986. Ironically, one of the more reliable cars I've owned! Also a looong way from concourse, but pretty and good fun to drive.
  14. Just a reminder, I still don't get the little topic summary on mouseover of the topic when looking at today's posts. Would be useful if it can be resurrected? Thanks.
  15. I wouldn't bother with fans or dehumidifier personally, just leave a couple of the windows / doors open so there's some air movement. I've got a polytunnel in a reasonably sunny / breezy spot, and wood I've had in there since April (split smallish, stacked on pallets, mesh windows and south facing door open) should be good for burning this year. In retrospect I should have put some sort of vapour barrier down, but it's still drying well.
  16. I always feel that I don't have enough, and it's for personal use only! Can never have too many logs...
  17. Better in the rain I think, I leave conifer outside for a while before splitting and storing under cover to season.
  18. Ahh, right. Shame they can't actually award you a fair amount of money for your time and trouble. A moral victory at least.
  19. Well done. Will you pursue the driver directly for your additional costs?
  20. Thanks peas. Didn't know that, as I only browse by today's posts. Bum.
  21. Hmm. Thanks, but it doesn't happen for me (PC, firefox) and I've waited for 30 seconds or so? Unless the wait time is really long!
  22. Would still be useful to get the summary of each thread on mouseover, so not having to click into the thread if it's not relevant / interesting?
  23. At least they had the courtesy to bin bag the windows!
  24. It could be set by the individual user on the old site, and I chose 30 (I think, whatever the maximum was) as otherwise there's lots of mouse clicking from page to page.
  25. Thanks. Understood, and it's your site! Id just say, with this few posts per page it takes a lot of clicking to read any fairly long topic, and it was easier on the old site...
