  1. Was there much forestry/Tree stuff at the show? we have not been for a few years after some cold /wet ones that were miserable! Bear looks good.
  2. Very sorry to hear, hearts are going out to you but it wont help sort out problems this will make for you and your business right now. We were discussing roof security recently, razor wire / metal spikes under the roof? secure cages within the building?(does such a thing actually exsist?)
  3. Hi jon, Weather not too bad up here, just cold and grey, no midges as yet.... apologies for trying to sell you a load of logs last night when you phoned to get in touch with matty, bit of crossed wires going on! StephF.
  4. Spoke too soon, stepped out back door to help unload some logs and there was a very heavy shower!!
  5. Worked in hottest weather this year yet, yesterday, today was foggy and cool, no rain yet....
  6. It sounds as if the tree just needs some light crown reduction on the house side to stop branches touching / damaging windows/gutters. I would advise getting the tree inspected regularly (annually) by a qualified, insured professional, with a written report done. Someone on this site may be able to recommend someone in your area? If the verdict is good health then insurance wise you should be covered, if any problems, then act on what advice is given, it is impossible to tell from a photo if all is well with the tree. I hope it is healthy & stays put for a long while yet!
  7. Its a rare tree to see in northern parts of uk, I have only seen them in France. Grew the seeds, from them, which did well until deer got in, have still got a few but not sure they'll survive in NE!
  8. We have worked on a few sssi sites, cant remember anything difficult about it. You had to follow guidlines for working near watercourses and have procedures in place to prevent fuel/chemical polution.
  9. I buy 25tn loads Forestry softwood, get approx 70-75 cubic metres from this quantity if it is a good clean load. this is timber that is around 2 years old so seasoned, therefore the load has a good volume of timber in it, not sure how much if the timber was green when delivered, but would be a lot less.
  10. Wrote something on this thread ages ago! I still have my second pair Laveros that were replaced by Lavero after 1st pair had soles that fell apart. 2nd pair were ok,soles did not fall apart, and must say they were the most comfortable boots I've ever worn.
  11. We cleared some overgrown Holly recently, it was large trees and as branches touched ground had suckered and spread over the area. A digger levelled the site for so we could re-seed with grass, and dug out the stumps/roots easily.
  12. Yes, sorbus aria. Common name Whitebeam.
  13. Hi Grant, you did the right thing, the friend I knew who had a ltd co. and his business failed, managed not to loose his home, but had a visit from some 'heavies' who bundled him into a van and tried to get money owed to a very angry supplier out of him, threatened to hurt his family if he told anyone etc. Afterwards he had a severe breakdown.
  14. Legally the 'LTD' co is liable for the debt not you personally, but you have to be a pretty hard nosed person to live with fact that you let so many others down when you did not pay what you owed them. Then there are a lot of future problems if you want to continue in business.
  15. A friend of my'ns son, 6 years old was killed by a large grave stone that fell on him while they were walking on a footpath through grave yard. A group was set up as a result of the tradgedy that used to go and test how stable the stones were all over the country. People might think that was very random accident, but a lot of old headstones are very unsafe. It destroyed my friend and her husband. she had a severe mental breakdown and took years to recover.
  16. Never had a problem on ferry, ours chainsaws were in a soft roll back topped pick up. they could smell my french cheeses we bought to take home! and were more concerned by a sealed box, of would you believe it jams! someone we met asked us to take them to UK, we were not 100% sure what they had packed in box which was stupid, so I just said 'Les confitures' and they did not bother opening it.
  17. The trainer we use only lets you train on his kits, all Loler tested etc, also you can try out different bits etc and harnesses so get a feel for what suits you best before you invest in your own.
  18. Figures based on amounts of logs sold to customers who had a wood boiler, average 3 cubic metres per 10-14 days. I dont have one!
  19. I am very concerned that the people selling these systems are only interested in 'dazzling' people with the investment figures etc,the ones I have spoken to have no idea if local wood fuel suitable for the boilers is sold locally, or if indeed any suppliers are able to meet the needs of these wood guzzling boilers, at least 25 tonnes of dry seasoned logs per year for each boiler sold, or huge quantities of woodchip. I have heard of owners burning briqettes as they were unable to get dry logs, a very expensive option! It is not like installing an oil or gas system where the supply is of fuel is easy.

    Gps

I've tried using a satnav doing this job, it was useless, I marked the parked truck as a'favourite' so at least I could find my way back! . The compass and map method are reasonably reliable and I have good fun finding plots, but when trees are very dense a gps would find the plots with greater accuracy.
  21. So sad to hear this, lets hope they get caught red handed very soon, for everyones sake.
  22. It looks nice timber whatever it is! not something you come accross very often. We have found them are easy to grow from seed and they grow fast as well(Dawn Redwood)
  23. That is a good point; making it clear that 'on the books' may seem to be getting paid less, but they have work 5 days a week and presumably all kit provided etc. By the way up here in Northumberland it seems to be £120-£150 a day for sub contracted climbers, depending on experience.
  24. Well seasoned by the looks of it...
  25. Not seen one like that before:)
