  1. You have to wear one for an hour or so at height to really find out! I was advised to try certain harnesses for 'women' (rockclimbing gear) but found them all very uncomfortable. It all depends what shape and size you are, so only you can answer the question!
  2. whoops, not much good at maths!
  3. Hi Sam, I got my calculator out, and just worked out the cost per \kwh of my logs based on your figures is: H/W 15P Kwh, M/W 15p Kwh S/W is 16p per Kwh. I then looked up current prices on internet ( we are not on any kind of mains here, I have no clue what everyone pays for electriciy or gas etc!) and most electric companies charge between 14.5 & 16.5 pence /Kwh, so heating by wood is definately not cheaper that mains electric.
  4. I have had this conversation with a lass who was working with me today, and her coke aga is cheaper than a wood cooker, or around the same, but that did not take into account the time/fuel and equipment needed to process 20-25 tonnes of cordwood! plus her stove can run all day & night with minimal input from her. I can understand the logic of someone wanting to know how many Kwh of heat he is buying, but I have had no replies yet to my very nice email with all the information he requested!
  5. I have sent him a very nice email explaining the calorific values of the logs, waiting for a response... just dont seem to have the patience I used to have with the more awkward ones, I am trying to be nice and not the 'grumpy old woman'! he is very local so could be a good customer as you say.
  6. This is helpful, you have done all the hardwork for me, although I have to trust your guess on the weight of 0.75 cbm! Logically then if I sell a 1.5cbm loose load it is double the bag (roughly)? I may take a previous replys advice and give this customer a miss. It sounds as if he could a lot of hassle think he has been reading too much info on the internet about log burners.
  7. I think I have just encountered a complete nutter on phone/email, so not sure why I'm bothering but... he wants to know what is the calorific value of my 3 metre load? I feel challanged to have a go and tell him the answer, but not a clue how to find this out. I asked him if he had a gasifying boiler and thought maybe he needed to know for the FIT etc. But no, he just wants to know. He is also presuming the 3 metres comes in 'A bag'. I suspect he will be moisture testing each log, they average between 15-20%.
  8. I thought the big increase in bacs for Firewood payments was because most people wont pay 50+ pence for a stamp to post a cheque! It does save a lot of faffing around with paper, but often they dont realise if the payment does not come with invoice ref, it is hard to identify, mainly as the person on invoice is often not the one paying!!
  9. think tree 4 is Lime and I wondered if tree 2 was a variety of Birch? some have a very coppery bark ie; Betula jaqumontii 'wakehurst place chocolate'.
  10. I thought alarms could be wired up so they went straight to police stations? they did in a place I worked once, but not cheap. anyway I think the first thing these thieves did was to smash all matts CCTV & security lights, they probably know how to disarm an alarm? As Mats mum, thanks for all the support everyone has given him, (Sorry mat!) I want everyone to know his family are absolutely devasted for him, no one is sleeping/eating and is very angry that people get away with this every day, please can we get some response from police; we know who these criminals are it is time to get them back behind bars! May be the private detective idea is a thought...
  11. like it!!
  12. Probably logged and and sold by now!
  13. So angry/ sad to hear this happened to you Mat, you dont deserve it; no honest hard working person does. We really feel for you, having been through it all before, will add to any reward you offer for info.
  14. Sacha baron cohens parents in Golders Green, Marty Wild, ? cant remember, sure there are more!
  15. I disagree, we sometimes buy cord around 2-3 years, old it is often going into store at around 15%
  16. I find scottish woodlands expensive, would not be paying more than £35 tonne roadside from local sources, and the price quoted does not normally include vat which will be 20%, + haulage on top, if this is a bought in price you are paying that is pretty good though.
  17. Good to here you had success with dryer logs, ours only burns dry S/W and is very clean. I had a go at Esse as they go on about hardwood, when they should be emphasising the moisture content as most important!
  18. I am suffering (wrong word) from this problem already! local Green energy shop selling stoves has been so good at promoting softwood as sustainable etc, and our web site has all the pro softwood stuff on it that we cant cut and prepare enough! I've got a lovely barn of dry hardwood that I am forcing prople to buy, telling them it is amazing mixed in with softwood.. Feed-back on the softwood is often along the lines of how much better/easier it burns than the hardwood they have previously bought elsewhere. I think it is because it is well seasoned and dry, and maybe H/W was not. On the matter of research into tar: on our web site is a photo of inside my Esse cooker that burns 24/7 on softwood and is as clean as a whistle!!
  19. Arboretums well labelled are a good place for learning to identify new species, as above comment states.
  20. Firewood sales quieter this week.. not complaining there are lots of other things to be doing!
  21. Nice photos!
  22. If your feet are wide make sure you get the right boots, too narrow and they can be unwearable and wreck your feet.
  23. We have no problem selling softwood to our customers, you are right, get them educated then they often find they prefer it! it is easier to work with on every level, and not that much cheaper now than hardwood. We have soft, hard and mixed loads to sell, and the softwood is by far the most popular for wood burners, this winter the price (it is cheaper) has made a big difference, and some 'mixed load' customers have changed to softwood.
  24. I dont like any wood to be chipped over 2" if I can help it, not popular when we are working flat out!!
  25. NO! very dry and sunny,... for everyones information it has not rained here for a record 3 days (not in the daytime anyway!)
