1. Salic Capra I think, Goat Willow.
2. We were bridge cutting ivy off large trees today, small copse was completely smothered with ivy. I was wondering how you could get rid of it, mulcher would have damaged the tree roots I think.
3. I think there has been a similar thread in past, but we left wood chip in a clients garden, who was very ill after moving it several weeks later, her lungs badly affected and was hospitalised for some time. However if the wood chip is spread on ground, it should not become mouldy, but I am not an 'expert'!
4. Sounds about right, what I charge.
5. We had a flood that washed logs out of 1 building! Logs put away last summer mostly dry, but finding damp patches now as we get near back of our hard wood shed, this has been worse other years, but always depressing! Try and solve the problem ever year, but never quite get it right! Snow, rain, condensation etc. Does help if all logs are really dry when put under cover, even if raining while processing, will cause the black/damp patches. Barn open all sides, so plenty of ventilation.
6. Noticed an increase in church properties asking for/requiring surveys, in recent years. they probably can't get insurance if they don't, for health and safety reasons. Just normal rates for any work, tendered for, often see some good veteran trees. They need to employ good tree surgeons and properly insured ones! Often working around very ancient buildings etc and don't want any damage, to property or trees.
7. Not serious in comparison to others, but we have been unable to leave yard due to floods few times, and one day floods were washing logs out of the hardwood barn, down the road! just glad it did not come into house. work cancelled last week as sites too wet, hoping we can get on next week, though it still looks wet on forecast.
8.
Hi Steve, it's Steph F. I cannot access my page, it goes to someone called shabz78!!! Been like this for a few days. Do you know what the problem is, or has he hacked my account? Steph

9. Hi Jon, Good year so far, but was slower than normal on run up to Christmas as so warm!packed up for a few days
10. I cover my loads with tarps roped down and the logs arrive good and dry. If they are to be tipped out, I ask for a tarp to cover them to be left for me.
11. Yes, did it for a few years, wearing loads of chemical suit/gloves etc and following strict dressing/undressing and washing etc critical, is essential; any chemical contact with skin serious. Sinuses and nose etc can run like you have a cold, very boring and repetitive work, no better than standing on a factory production line, repetitive strain injuries to back/ hands/ shoulders etc. glad I don't do it any more even though good £'s are possible if you can work fast enough, paid by the 1000, so if you can do 40,000 / day (depends on how big the trees are, small trees faster, but there is no choice!) worth doing, also the planters can't plant if ground frozen, so if it is -0deg for long there is little or no work.
12. Now you have thrown a spanner into the conversation! I often wonder if the 18" log customers are getting more than the smaller logs, but they do take less time to cut. Never weighed the loads we deliver.
13. Yes Ive had to 'invent' ways to clean the Esse! Bits of hose gaffa taped to vacuum tube etc.. but it does cook well, I enjoy cooking on it, but we have persevered for 8 years with poorly designed firebox doors that fall to bits amongst other problems- maybe Esse have sorted that out now. Heats enough water for 2 of us, any more in house and we have to light another wood burner.
14. It's what is mainly grown in Kielder, clean, hot and low ash.
15. As I spend a. Lot of of time stacking logs for customers every winter, here would be my requests; 1. Build off the ground so I'm not kneeling on gravel/concrete etc, 30cm at least. 2. no sharp sloping roof that you hit your head on while stacking 3. Big enough for the load delivered. 4. Build next to delivery area so no buckets(if steps) wheel barrowing needed.
16. Sell 100's tonnes of spruce, lots of customers ask for Sitka logs, hot, clean and good value
17. Yep, 2 on the go, log orders coming in....
18. Heard the news, sounded horrific, she was playing on a swing attached to tree branch that collapsed on her at a children's playground.
19. Spoke with someone from forest research and it is probably spruce aphid. I have to send some samples and photos so will know for definite.
20. Has anyone else noticed the large number of sitka defoliating this year, from ground upwards, some still have this years flush on tips, but branches now bare, in various stages of loosing needles? seems very bad in North Northumberland and up towards borders most stands and roadside trees seem affected, all ages. Other species do not seem affected, ie Norway. I have wondered if it could be Rhizosphaera? Link to info: https://ag.umass.edu/fact-sheets/rhizosphaera-needle-cast
21. What does the crown look like, is it healthy?
22. Did anyone get the email today saying government is to increase tax on insurance by 58%?not sure what this means, what does anyone else know/think?
